Dotting the Andaman Sea along the western coast of Thailand are hundreds of small islands, many of them consisting of karst limestone formations such as those pictured here in Krabi Province.

One of the funniest animals we met in South Africa was this Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) that lived in a large freshwater marsh near the entrance to Varty Camp where we stayed. The crock was covered in the duckweed (Lemnaceae) that floated on the surface of the water. We named him the "Chia Crock" because of his resemblance to the terra cotta "chia Pets" sold by the millions annually. Londolozi Game Reserve, South Africa. Conservation status: Least Concern

Macro Monday's and the theme of "My Closest".

With the aim this week of getting as close as we possibly can to a subject and showing either a ruler or graph paper in the shot I first located a small ruler and then I decided to use some Chia seeds bought from a local store and I poured a small amount onto a white plate.

Next I placed the ruler onto the plate and then poured more seeds onto the ruler.

After setting up my camera and focussing the Tamron 90mm ti it's closest focus I found a close-up filter and tried attaching it to the lens. It was just too small but I managed to keep it in place using Sellotape.

Then I spent a while trying to find a composition and in the end I settled on what you see here. This shows the 8cm marker on the ruler. The close-up filter has the effect of having to place the lens so much closer to the subject than usual and depth of field is very small, so much so that hardly anywhere is in sharp focus.even though I set the aperture much smaller than I normally would. The smaller aperture has even created some chromatic aberration around some of the seeds.

The use of the close-up filter got me in close enough so that the entire frame from top left to bottom right is about 2cm long.

Descubrimiento culinario :)

Back in the day, the fields of California were so full of chia that in some places nothing else was able to grow. Growing each year from seed, the one-and-a-half-foot-tall plants produced nutritious seeds that served as a staple food for native Californians for millennia. Indigenous cooks cleaned the chia seeds, then roasted them by heating rocks and placing them in baskets with the seeds. Sometimes they were simply ground and eaten dry by hand, a food surprisingly rich in complex carbohydrates, oil and protein.

I asked my brother in law to make me a spoon for my chia seeds so he made me two from this beautiful olive wood.

Trying to think of grey food really stumped my brain. Grey is not a color of life, to me it represents death. Grey produce... nothing readily came to mind so I found the chia seeds in my cupboard and felt satisfied.

I am anxious about my next image which is going to be black on black, eek - wish me luck! If anyone has any insight on how best to shoot it I would appreciate tips or tricks that you may have learned along the way.

The spiky flower heads of this plant were quite a bit different than the rest of the blooms in the area. The tiny flowers were past their prime, but I thought it was still an interesting subject.

Colors of autumn in Chia

My younger daughter and I took some of the chia seeds that we use for smoothies and oatmeal and planted them in some potting soil in an egg shell. We have created our own chia pet of sorts. Had a tough time with processing this morning and can't get the colors right but I love the light and am staying true to my goal of light first.
