"Before the endgame, the Gods have placed the middle game." Siegbert Tarrasch
In the cemetery at Wainhouse Tower, Halifax. England
January 2023.
"The tower was commissioned as a chimney by John Edward Wainhouse, who owned the local dye works. In order to comply with the new smoke abatement act of 1870, Wainhouse, who had a good appreciation of architecture, wanted the chimney to be an object of beauty."
The fog banks held on for much of the afternoon. The people in the uplands wondered if the people in the lowlands knew how blue the sky was beyond their shrouded gloom.
DIgital - This one deserves a zoom in.
(Inspired by TheWalkinMan who has this penchant for great shadow work!)
The economy has been rough on the cruise lines. It's like riding on a ghost ship. In many cases, the staff outnumber the passengers.
But the day has been pleasant, with lots of sun, and just kicking back is a good thing.
But after the tanning, what's a girl to do?
I could spend time on Flickr, but I've nearly used up my 540 minutes (don't tell David!). But then he's using his own minutes to install another edition of his crazy killer orchids from space story.
I look around at the people draped on lounge chairs; they look like they are a step away from the tomb (most are sleeping in a most undignified manner). No action here, so I take a walk.
Hey, I found this cool giant chess set way up on one of the top decks. So, I start a game with myself.
Before long, I see wonderful shadows, and a plan takes shape.
Why not tell a story without words? Tell it with these chessmen.
Can you discern the unfolding tale?
"It's her move!"
Blessings,
Sheree
(Check out TheWalkinMan's work. It's terrific. www.flickr.com/photos/sanfilipo/
And if you are into wild stories (his newest is about a private detective), check out David's work. Pretty brilliant stuff.

As a cushion is for the hip, what is for the elbow? Well, a little etymological dissection is in order to understand the anatomy of these linguistic parts.
The word cushion is from Latin coxa (hip, thigh), because that’s what a cushion was meant for. As it turned out Romans had an elbow cushion as well, which they called cubital, from Latin cubitus (elbow). That’s where we got the word cubit, the unit of length equal to the length of the forearm.
These body parts have a way of showing up where you’d least expect them. This week we’ll see five words that owe their origins to the body, some obvious, others not.
Today's word is gambit, from Spanish gambito, from Italian gambetto (the act of tripping someone), from gamba (leg). Earliest documented use: 1656.

These villagers enjoy a card game in the street at Changu while the man in the background contemplates his next chess move. The ancient Hindu temple of Changu Narayan (18kms east of Kathmandu) lies further ahead. It is located on a high hilltop ridge (1541m) in the village of Changu, also known as Dolagiri.
