A short reminiscence on the motion picture film
"WAR GAMES" from the year 1983:
A STRANGE GAME.
THE ONLY WINNING MOVE
IS NOT TO PLAY.

THE ONLY WINNING MOVE IS -AND WOULD HAVE BEEN- NOT TO PLAY.

This funky-looking thing is actually a ladybird larvae. It's not the regular sevenspot species though, but instead a 14-spotted ladybird (Propylea quatuordecimpunctata) which has a chequered elytra in black and yellow, somewhat reminscent of a chess board.
This is a Eurasian species which was attempted to be introduced in North America as a biological pest agent to control the Russian wheat aphid (Diuraphis noxia). This did not work out, but in the 90s, the species was accidentally introduced via European shipping instead and has been found in south-eastern Canada to the Great Lakes as well as in at least nine states in the U.S. and is still spreading - and considered an invasive species.
A shot of the adult one killing aphids can be found here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/42125991895/
My new chess-playing friend. Samie (Sammy) is a chess player from Jakarta Indonesia who learned chess at age three. He plays in Union Square Park most weeknights for "...amusement" as he put it. There was telepathy going on between he and I, as I always got a very clear sense what Sammy was thinking about his opponent and their ability or ineptness during each of the four matches I stayed for. They were each over in minutes. Sammy is a player.
Young girl, watched by her dad, takes on a chessmaster in a friendly game in Union Square, Manhattan, New York City, New York.

Another replica of an iconic photo. This one is the picture of Bobby Fischer, the American chess master and champion in the period 1972-1975. He was the only American out of approximately 20 champions since 1886, 11 of them were Russians (including USSR) and the recent champion is Indian. This photo is somehow iconic, don’t know why, but he meant something in the cold-war maybe

The guy in the straw hat is Murray Turnbull, a Harvard Square institution since 1982. A certified chess Life Master, he plays any and all comers ($2.00 a game, refunded if you win or draw) at this chess table outside Au Bon Pain restaurant in Holyoke Center. (Au Bon Pain is no longer there, and Holyoke Center, much changed, is now Harvard's Smith Campus Center.)
Frequent subject Whilliam Shannon, Chessmaster. Plays all challengers on the streets of Philadelphia.
The street portraits are taken of strangers, in a few seconds, with no preparations.
