Three of the Lewis Chessmen in the National Museum for Scotland.
They were shot through glass in low light using a macro lens. It was pretty tricky as I couldn't use flash and people kept coming to look at the display.
Its estimated that the chessman were made from Walrus ivory and bone in the 12th century. The actual figure are only a couple of inches tall.
I fell in love with these chessman on a visit to the Isle of Lewis many years ago. I came home with one knight but wished I could have afforded the whole set. Not long ago, I was thinking about Lewis, longing to see it again, especially the standing stones. On a whim, I ordered the chessmen from the Edinburgh Museum. I confess I do not know how to play chess. I just like the strange little figures.
By the way the Berserkers are known as rooks in today’s chess.
12th-century chess pieces, most of which are carved from walrus ivory, discovered in 1831 at Uig, Isle of Lewis, in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. They constitute some of the few complete, surviving medieval chess sets. A newly identified piece, a "warder" (the castle or rook), was sold for £735,000 in July 2019.
Although to the modern eye the figural pieces, with their bulging eyes and glum expressions, have a distinct comical character, scholars believe that the comic or sad expressions were not perceived as such by the makers, who instead saw strength, ferocity.
The chessmen were number 5 in the list of British archaeological finds selected by experts at the British Museum for the 2003 BBC Television documentary Our Top Ten Treasures .

The Tectonic Arena Sardona offers a unique view into the formation of alpine mountains and valleys. The collision of Africa and Europe caused the Alps to tower up over millions of years.
Ancient rock layers folded, fractured and were thrust on top of each other. A rich variety of evidence and traces of this enormous force are remarkably visible in the World Heritage Sardona.
For more than two centuries scientists from around the world have studied the geologic structures and processes of mountain formation. In the Tectonic Arena Sardona they attempted to solve the secrets of the emergence of mountains.
