The final and undoubtedly most important undergraduate chemical engineering course at Texas A&M University is CHEN 426: Chemical Engineering Plant Design. It is rigorous and life-consuming. Each team is required to submit a detailed report concerning the design of a plant to produce a specified product.

As part of the report, each team must include a team photo. This team (Sean, Ryan, Jared, and Kristen) wanted to recreate The Beatles' Abbey Road album cover. I jumped at the opportunity to try to take the photo, as I rarely take people pictures because none of my friends ever care to be photographed. We had fun trying to take the photo while trying not to get hit by buses, campus maintenance vehicles, bicyclists, etc.

Here's the original Abbey Road Shot: revolution115.files.wordpress.com/2008/04/beatles_-_abbey...

Circa 1977. This is one of several photos I took of various classmates at Long Beach State. A poster showing a 'Know Your Student Leaders' type of pictorial guide was being created for the benefit of the general engineering student body. The young woman shown was an officer for the student chapter of AIChE.

I seem to recall that she was a resident of San Pedro.

This is another of several photos I took of various classmates at Long Beach State. And it is yet another photo posed just to be off-the-wall and silly. As you could imagine, she had a great sense of humor!

www.che.tamu.edu/student/plant-design-competition-winners...

My senior plant design team, The Hexius Group, won second place out of eleven teams in the Spring 2008 Senior Chemial Engineering Plant Design Competition at Texas A&M University. Our task was to design a process to transform two refinery wastewater streams into either potable water or ocean effluent. Our process consisted of a sour water stripper to remove ammonia and hydrogen sulfide from the sour water stream and a typical water treatment section to clean the treated sour water stream and the process water stream (chemical injection, rapid mix/coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, and filtration).

I know it's probably typical for the second place team to feel jilted, but our professor actually said that he thought we should have won. Fluor, the company that sponsored the design competition, picked the winners. Our professor said that my team was his pick, so we'll be getting a better grade on our report than the team that Fluor picked. We were disappointed that our design wasn't chosen by Fluor, but it helped that our professor acknowledged that he thought we should have won -- at least it's proof that my feeling that we should have won isn't completely unjustified.

Something else was kind of interesting -- the first place team had three guys and one girl, my team had three girls and one guy, and the third place team had two girls and two guys -- so it worked out that an even number of guys and girls placed in the design competition.

Scientist in a laboratory

This takes me back to undergrad days in the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Wisconsin - one of the only campuses to EVER have had a functioning BAR in the basement of one of the dorms...

And you wonder why "STILL" takes me to "diSTILLation"?

Have fun!

teaser for Fynn's Face Off competition ... our team drew the items lava and dirt, and the character of Engineer. We were mutant siamese chemical engineers, long story ... there will be a blog post up soon :).
