Cheetah mother and three cubs in early Sunlight in the Masai Mara Kenya

This Cheetah had to be thirsty. The water was brackish. It would come, take a drink, grimace, walk a bit, then take another drink, etc.

Hunting I'm not sure what, this cheetah hears something going on over in the zebra compound, distracting him from his play and rousing his curiosity. He didn't know exactly what the disturbance was, but he sure wanted to join the party.

(Three photos.)

Mother cheetah and her three kits of 4 weeks old are spotted on the horizon - she determinedly leads them towards the road and crosses just in front of our vehicle - our guide had guessed her chosen path and backed up so we were able to give her plenty of room

One of the kits was quite bold and led the way into the bush, another sat down for a few moments then mother left them lying low hidden in the long grass while she went off to hunt

A very special encounter in the wild

We only had two days left on our safari and hadn't even had a sniff of a cheetah. We jokingly asked Gilbert our guide if he could press the Cheetah button on the dashboard as it had worked for all the other animals on the hit list. Not long after he found us this beautiful cat.

The light was fading fast and her constant movement made it well nigh impossible to nail a blur free shot. This was the one moment when she stopped to briefly look round before moving of again. It was the only usable shot I got of our encounter.

Cheetahs are active mainly during the day, with hunting its major activity. Adult males are sociable despite their territoriality, forming groups called "coalitions". Females are not territorial; they may be solitary or live with their offspring in home ranges. Carnivores, cheetah mainly prey upon antelopes and gazelles. They will stalk their prey to within 100–300 metres (330–980 ft), charge towards it and kill it by tripping it during the chase and biting its throat to suffocate it to death.

The cheetah's body is specialised for speed; it is the fastest land animal. The speed of a hunting cheetah averages 64 km/h (40 mph) during a sprint; the chase is interspersed with a few short bursts of speed, when the animal can clock 112 km/h (70 mph).

Cheetahs are induced ovulators, breeding throughout the year. Gestation is nearly three months long, resulting in a litter of typically three to five cubs (the number can vary from one to eight). Weaning occurs at six months; siblings tend to stay together for some time. Cheetah cubs face higher mortality than most other mammals, especially in the Serengeti region. Cheetahs inhabit a variety of habitats – dry forests, scrub forests and Savannah.

During my trip to Masa Mara in June, I had the pleasure of sighting and photographing Malaika the Cheetah.

Malaika is the daughter of Kike who became famous in the Big Cat Diary.

In a lot of the scenes in the series Kike was seen hopping onto Jonathan Scott's Jeep and scanning the horizon for a potential meal. It seems that Malaika has also inherited the genes and is also an expert at hopping onto nearby vehicles for a vantage view. I shall post other pictures of hers soon where she is seen sitting very comfortably on top of a vehicle.

Is it me, or do cheetah's just exhude a laid-back coolness? Sure, they are the fastest land animals on the planet, but otherwise they are chill.
