Curio, a three year old brumby mare, was mustered on Macumba station in northern South Australia in 1945 and consigned to Marrabel.
Her bucking action unseated most riders within three seconds. Curio remain unridden for eight years.
The Marrabel Rodeo Club made her a feature horse in 1947 and each year invited one of Australia’s top rough riders to attempt the ten-second ride. Thousands of people converged on Marrabel for the annual October holiday Monday to witness the contest.
Before her death at age 28 in 1970, Curio had five foals. Son of Curio, Curio’s special, Curiosity, and Curio’s Farewell became successful buckjumpers. The only filly foal died soon after birth.
This one and a half life-size statue is of Curio being successfully ridden in 1953 by Alan Woods during his famous ten-second ride. The statue was created by sculptor Ben Van Zetten, who was commissioned by the Marrabel Rodeo Club in 1991. It is made of cold cast bronze and weighs two tonnes.
The small community of Marrabel held its first rodeo in 1935 and this even has continued to be one of Australia’s foremost rodeos.
