The Method to My Madness
Whether you have spent upwards of 30k on a Canon 600mm f4 II lens, a 1D X Mk II camera, teleconverters, gitzo tripod, camera bags, Whimberly head and tickets to Barrow, Alaska or have bought a Coolpix P900 for $600 at Best Buy to take down to your local park, you will share one common denominator as bird/wildlife photographers — the obsession to get close and closer yet. When I started in ’03 with a Canon 10D (ancient artifact now) and 400mm f5.6 (still a great lens), I immediately put into action the “slow-approach” as described by Arthur Morris (an online expert). I even low crawled 100 feet on gravel to get close-ups of a Great Blue Heron ( not recommended in shorts). There are techniques to this like walking at an angle to the subject towards a point with better light while slowly closing the distance. Never look at or face the intended target directly. Nowadays I know instinctively whether this method is worth the time and effort. Most of the time it isn’t.
The next way to get closer is to use some form of concealment. Ray Harm, one of my favorite wildlife artists and the very first person to have lithographic print editions made of his work, uses a domed camo tent to not only photograph but sketch wildlife. This takes lots of scouting and sometimes days of waiting for a group of Common Mergansers for example to become familiar with the little tent. Sitting cross-legged with my lens sticking out of a hole in a very confining blind before dawn on a frosty morning is not my idea of a good time. I used waders to get into secretive places along rivers and ponds where I would sit on a rock inclosed by tules and cattails. This has worked for me and has provided hours of wilderness experiences—sights, sounds, smells, observations—to be treasured forever. However, it has not yielded that many great photographs.
Waterfowl seem to have the peculiar ability to be unconsciously aware of your presence. I know this sounds strange but people who have been there will confirm it. I have watched a duck species come closer and closer over the course of an hour only to, on the verge of swimming right into position for the perfect shot, turn around and swim just out of the range of sight. Whether Bufflehead, Teal species, Northern Shoveler or whatever, this behavior will be repeated many times while I patiently hold my lens, thumb and forefinger poised and ready. If I had been seated slightly to the left or right, I would have had the shot. More often than not the object of my desire will leisurely retrace the distance it took so long to traverse leaving me without a photograph. The thrill of getting close, yes! An actual image to prove it, no!
More often than not, I’ll place myself in position for a shot based on observed behavior. For example, the Deschutes River south of Bend, Oregon, where I lived for several years, narrows near some high bluffs by a pier and a bridge. In late fall and winter, I would get up early and wait at these vantage points for the first paddle boarder to spook diving ducks my way. I have taken some great flight shots this way. Where I live now, I have observed that a Great Horned Owl likes to catch the first rays of sun on certain branch in a willow tree. I have gotten many close-up owl portraits from my truck window. The Common Mergansers pictured above like to sun themselves on a large rock in the river at a park where I use the restroom after my long drive to Bend. I brought my 600mm lens on my 7D Mk II and walked over to the spot to take this photo. It wasn’t complicated.
A more costly form of this approach to bird photography is what I call the cheaptickets.com method. That’s where a photographer books flight, hotel and rental car to an area where the behavior of wildlife is atypical. At Gatorland near Orlando many species of wading birds — herons, egrets, storks, ibises, etc. — nest above ponds full of “gators” as a strategy to protect their eggs from marauding raccoons and “possums.” I am sold on Santee Lakes east of San Diego for wintering birds. It is a beautiful oasis in desert country where birds are more than happy to trade off privacy for security and sustenance.
Finally, my favorite method of getting close could be called “waiting for the gift.” All that is required of me is to get up early and place myself in a typical habitat with a calm, aware, receptive mindset. If I don’t see any creature, I just pull out my trusty phone and start filming or composing landscape photographs. Sometimes I might pull out pen and pad for a little onsite writing. I will definitely pour myself a cup of coffee and snack on an apple or homemade muffin. I’ll let not my heart be troubled. The gift is coming. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow but, when it comes, it will come back in spades.
There is a time when the conventions of the natural world are suspended. It is magic realism. A wild animal metamorphoses into a model on a photoshoot. A Cooper’s Hawk poses in a tree next to Red Robins and lets me stand below shooting like a paparazzi. A Great Blue Heron just off shore along a bike path throws more poses than Derek Zoolander, then dives completely underwater and surfaces drenched and empty-beaked. A Great Egret dances on a Russian Olive Tree so close I have to back up. A Virginia Rail teaches a chick how to hold a bug in its beak and later settles down with her chicks’ heads sticking out of her feathers—all just a few feet away. A Golden Eagle on the cross beam of a telephone pole lets me walk right up to it. It raises its wings and poses like a harpy. I will never forget moments like these. The photographs don’t do them justice.

For those keen on shopping, we went to a new mall full of high street fashion brands like Top Shop, Nine West, Aldo and Karen Millen – and it was cheap! I purchased a wallet and 2 necklaces from Aldo for HK$250 – worth going just for the shopping!
As the country is opening up they are starting to attract more tourists. So if you like to travel off the beaten track, think about heading there sooner rather than later before the city is crawling with tourists!
Almaty has a wide range of food, and we got to try everything from Chinese, Russian, Uzbek and Kazak food. The locals eat a lot of mutton, and for special occasions – horse meat. Specialty drinks also include the obvious, vodka, as well as camel’s and horse’s milk. Alasha is an Uzbek restaurant that provides good entertainment with locals dancing. The last night we were in the city were also lucky enough to eat at a place called Kazak Aul which was a local restaurant in the mountains which had 3 yurts (local houses) set up for diners.

Almaty used to be the capital city until 1997 when the Republic moved the capital to Astana. The city is in the mountain range so is the climate does vary. In the end of August, the mornings and evenings were cool (about 15 degrees) but the days were about 26 degrees. The city itself is a real mixture of old and new. Since Kazakhstan declared itself an independent country in December 1991, there has been more of a European influence in the architecture, alongside older Soviet-style infrastructure.

The gateway to Burma, Yangon is where contemporary and colonial Burma coexists. I don’t recommend spending a lot of time in Yangon, where the main attractions – the pagodas and colonial buildings can be done in a day.
Restaurant recommendation: Le Planteur is a real gem. It serves quality French food in a fantastic setting. For a more local eatery, Feel Myanmar is a great place to try local Burmese cuisine.

Only 15Km from the city centre is Medeo which has the highest ice skating rink in the world at just under 1700m above sea level. Unfortunately, the rink is only open during winter. Medeo is where the first of the gondolas start to head up the mountain to Chimbulak Ski Resort. The ride was about 20 minutes over sweeping hills. By the time we reached Chimbulak, we were at about 2200m above sea level. There is a ski village with one small resort and some nice cafes and restaurants – a great spot to hang out for a while. During the summer, this area is great for hiking.
The gentle way of life on the lake is meditative, whether you are visiting one of the floating gardens by boat, observing the fishermen with their unique fishing style, or simply relaxing on your balcony enjoying the serenity and tranquility only found in this little gem of a place. We stayed at Viewpoint Eco Lodge in Nyaung Shwe. Its luxurious cottage suites are built in the traditional Shan style – stilts on a lake. The staff paid close attention to every little detail so that our stay was a memorable one.
One of the highlights of the trip was the visit to Panklov Park and Zenkov Cathedral which is the second tallest wooden building in the world and is the most vibrant of colours – they repaint it every year! Only a short walk from Panklov park is the Green Market and Chocolate Factory. The Green market is where the locals go to buy their meat and preserves. The Chocolate Factory is amazing! The quality of chocolates is up there with the best in the world yet doesn’t cost an arm and a leg (Only paid about HK$67 for 6 gift packs)!
We hired bikes from the hotel and went for a wander. The road was rocky and bumpy, but the pedaling soon paid off when we got the first glimpse of the scenery. It was absolutely gorgeous! After getting lost a few times, we stumbled upon Red Mountain Vineyard and stopped for a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. The following day, our boat ride took us to a local market and the floating gardens. The lakeshore and islands are littered with villages on stilts, inhabited mostly by the Intha people. In the afternoon, visit Indein Village in the west coast of the lake. You will feel lost in a sea of ancient Shan style pagodas encrusted with vines. An absolute must visit!

Rudyard Kipling once wrote, “This is Burma, and it will be quite unlike any land you know about.” It’s hard to imagine a place being so unique that you can’t compare it to other places. But that’s Burma.
