Chasing the gold for a moment of time to capture. The photographers' malady.
Seneca Lake, Black Hill Regional Park, Boyds, Maryland
One of the surreal moments during my epic 13 1/2-hour Baldy photography hike came when I came across this tree. I had been already on my way down after reaching the peak (10,064 feet), which was a whole other world. The clouds on this slope were swirling in and out of the sparsely populated trees whenever the gale-force winds swept through. The bitter cold winds slapped my face like biting whips. All I could think of was to find somewhere to stay out of the winds. Then, the harrowing screams of the gales suddenly stop pounding at my ears. My eyes were literally transfixed at the juxtaposition of the snags on the ground that once stood tall against the snow-clad pines towering over me like giants. And at one point they endured the bitter climate together in this harsh-at-times subalpine mountainside.
and the sky did open to offer its own thunder and together they grieved deep into the night until the morning came.
While going up Bear Canyon Trail, I reached the notch where I couldn’t make it last time when it heavily rained. So, I was quite determined to reach it this time. Although mostly shrouded in the clouds, it was still quite windy. I hid in the opposite side of the notch where there was not much of wind blowing. But whenever I climbed back up to take photos, a series of gusts of wind whipped my face with bitter cold slaps. The thick layer of clouds shortly vanished down into the ravines. While the sun shone on this narrow uninhabitable pass for a few seconds, the sky having been hidden behind the clouds showed its hue.
These subalpine pines displayed one of the obvious characteristics of facing the reality - the harrowing winds that often alter their growth. The bent shapes of their trunks and the absence of branches on one side were not uncommon, leaving a hiker with a clear clue as to which direction the wind has been blowing. The thick clouds, reducing the visibility to less than 100 feet, billowed into the canyons and ravines and often erased the adjacent trees as if they weren’t there. Then, as soon as a whoosh of gale-force winds swept through, they reappeared in an instant and stood like an army of ghosts.
This iconic tree, one of the recognizable snags in this subalpine slope, marks a point roughly a mile to the Mt. Baldy summit. Who knows how long it has stood here. I’ve always loved this tree, weathered, no longer alive and yet still standing against the gales of winds that never seem to stop blowing. It greets me like a long lost friend. As the clouds smudged the ravines and blotted out what was surrounding it, its twisted body just stood out. It loomed tall as if it were still growing. The dry, wrinkled and crooked arms seemed stretching out further. Then, the wind zapped away the clouds and snapped me out of my reverie.
Skies don't have to be blue for a pleasant flight like in this picture. I started from Hollywood and headed towards Delchdork and made a turn back to SNO passing Hollywood and it was a lovely flight with NO blue skies.
