This method of intake significantly decreases or eliminates certain risks of heroin use, such as the transmission of HIV, hepatitis, and other diseases through needle sharing, the introduction of skin bacteria to the blood stream due to non-sterile injection, and the stress that injection puts on veins cannot occur.
Additionally, a small puff can be inhaled as a method of gauging the strength of the heroin. This may protect users from overdosing. Finally, the lungs can act to filter out adulterants that otherwise would pass directly into the bloodstream. One of the most common of these adulterants, talc, has an apparently greater potential to damage the lungs (as well as other organs, such as the kidneys) when present in the bloodstream, than when inhaled.
In any case, it is always harmful to expose the lungs to any kind of smoke or heated vapor. Inhaling heroin appears to rarely lead to toxic leukoencephalopathy. There are also documented cases of both severe acute asthma and exacerbation of underlying asthma caused by heroin inhalation, potentially resulting in death.

Holding camera while skiing without stocks was a little bit tough than imagined.
This is a fill shot from 18 Jan of the Coho ferry off Victoria's breakwater.
I see this ferry from my apartment, and I hear it when it leaves (it's leaving now). I wanted to catch a shot of it heading out of the harbour, so I jumped into my car and headed to Fisherman's Wharf, which is on the other side of the water from me. I got there just in time to see the ferry passing by an otherwise bleak and featureless backdrop.
I followed Plan B instead, which was to go and see if the breakwater was under construction yet; it wasn't, so I parked and setup this test shot. Just as I was ready, the ferry came into view. Perfect timing.
My Nikon D600 was in a mood at that moment, and was exposing way too hot, almost completely blowing out the shot. It's a testament to Lightroom's ability to recover highlights from raw files that I was able to bring this photo back. By the time I'd fixed the exposure metering, the ship was out of frame.
