Exercise Javelin Chase
Brig. Tim Carmichael, commander, 1 Signal Brigade, Headquarters Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (HQ ARRC), hosted Exercise Javelin Chase (EJC), July 8-9. The race was organized to raise funds to support the Help for Heroes charity.
EJC is a 24-hour running race where 8-man teams will compete to see which team will complete the most laps on a one-mile course in 24-hours. The winning team will be the team that has completed the most amounts of laps in the time period. This could vary from 150 to 200 laps.
Each team had to raise a minimum of £250 to participate in EJC.
“This is a charity race to raise money for Help for Heroes, which is a national charity that looks after the needs of injured military serving members and former service members,” said Brig. Carmichael.
He said they hope to raise a total of £5000 if not more and every single penny will be donated to Help for Heroes charity.
The event took place at the sports field behind HQ ARRC Officer’s Mess. The course was on grass and tracks with no tarmac that winds around and through the woods. As if it wasn’t going to be challenging enough to run 24-hours, the rain on opening day would make it a little more testing.
In the 24-hours a combined total of 2426.00 miles were covered, with the winning team, 299 Signal Squadron, Special Communication running 222 of those miles, and 22 Signal Regiment coming in second with 217 laps.

July 9, 2014 - North of Minden Nebraska US
What a Day to remember...
I was just out of surgery for my left knee, I wasn't supposed to be out at all. Knee was swollen to the size of a soft ball or bigger. Wrapped & in a cast but I wasn't about to let one of the best photographic storms of the season pass me by. Mrs & Friends helped me into my truck. Gear in hand I was off!
Before I was able to get on this storm. Historically, this storm wrecked havoc on 16 counties with softball and baseball sized hail. I caught up with it just to the south of Minden Nebraska as I was traveling south. I would never get in front of it but only on the back side as it proceeded to the southeast into North Central Kansas.
From my point of view, it was one of the best photographic storm of the year in South Central Nebraska. Some incredible captures from the back side of this incredibly photogenic thunderstorm. Light & Shadow played well as the Sun peaked out at the end of this day!

Another day, another 37 photo op. The other day 422 was on a York to York via The World, and baled out half way through and headed back to York with only half the itinerary completed. But as we know, these movements are not for the benefit of enthusiasts.
So today, I remained somewhat circumspect as I saw that 558(424) had left York with Caroline on a York-Scarborough-Hull-(The World)-Hull followed by a separate schedule taking the ensemble from Hull back to York. This would allow a comfortable 4 catches for the day. So Cottingham went well with 558 leading, Hessle went well with Caroline leading then a spot of lunch and off to Rawcliffe which isn’t such a great place so back to Goole to wait … and wait and wait. It disappeared off the radar before Knottingley. An hour later it reappeared at Knottingley South Jnc but no where else until finally the Hull to York schedule was fired up and the combination was seen returning to York from Sherburn-in-Elmet.
So we have shots of 37558 “Avro Vulcan XH558” at Cottingham and Hessle, and as a consolation, the returning Dairycoates to Tunstead aggregates empties behind FL 66619.

A hot and humid day.
Hello, my name is Chase and I am a 5 year-old Husky mix dog. Yes, there is something wrapped around my muzzle and let me tell you why! I was a stray dog running around on the outskirts of Kamloops when someone decided to use me for target practice. Both with a gun and a car. The RCMP found me and took me to the nearest SPCA which happened to be in the city of Kamloops. The nice people there immediately brought me to the animal hospital so they could have a good look at me. When the swelling went down in my jaw, they noticed that I had quite a few bullet fragments still in there. Thanks to the Biscuit Fund I received medical care so that all the bullet pieces could be removed and my muzzle could be taped so that it heals properly. I am now on a diet of mushy dog food for the next little while. I don't mind though, at least I know where my next meal is coming from!

Picas (Spanish Modern Thief Pouters, Palomas Deportiva) are flown in a competition – the cock pigeons chasing a hen. The cock pigeons are painted so that the judges can identify which pigeon is whose and score them according to how close a cock pigeon gets to the hen and impresses it with its courting abilities. The one that gets the most points wins
At the start of the competition up to 80 cocks are released to fly around then a hen pigeon is released under a tree or similar spot.
The hen is trained to be an expert in evading their attentions and will hide in trees, veer away while in flight and get up to all sorts of tricks. The competition takes place over 6 days and the winner is the the male pigeon that has spent the most time in the the air with the female and the most time in courtship on the ground.
The referee totals up points by watching the proceedings and at the end of the week comes up with a winner.
Walkie talkies are used to pinpoint the flocks whereabouts
