I created a chore chart for my daughter to help define her responsibilites and reward her for good behavior. This is a sample of the chore chart I made her.
Back in the days before the "Golden Age" of photography, shooting photos for advertising and commercial printing involved separate meters and analyzers to avoid errors on film. I don't remember nuttin like Photoshop. I remember shooting studio setups at a thousand a shot then waiting until film was back before pulling the set down for another commercial setup. Being a bit premature in tearing down could mean starting over.
What was some of the machinery and tricks used? About anything that could be used to gain an edge:
Incidental and reflected light meter like the fancy Spectra that measured both.
The Pentax 2 degree spot meter to analyze all the densities in an image for a full load of confusion.
An inexpensive color meter to get a sense of the color balance. These were rough instruments that might get you to the color balance ballpark.
The Spectra Tri-Color meter that was the price of a good used car. It measured the color temperature of the environmental light and charted correction in cc and decamired filtration. I heard it received an Oscar for saving Hollywood days of work and reshoots.
Strobe light / Electronic flash meters to get a sense of studio lighting. Quartz model lights never matched the quality of electronic elements.
The ubiquitous 4X5 inch Polaroid sheet film camera and 6X7 roll film camera backs for black & white negatives and color film to study studio and environmental lighting.
Color correction required a decamired color balance correction filter set for camera lenses.
A raft of gelatin filters in cc steps to make simpler corrections like a 20cc and a 5cc magenta sandwich to correct cool white fluorescent lighting.
Camera cases each included 1A warming filters and the usual tungsten and daylight film conversion filters.
A color primary ring-around of photo examples (see Photoshop: Alt-Image/Adjustments/Variations) for lab use.
A set of cc color primary filters in steps to study color balance in test prints.
The final step was always the heartbreak or often exhileration of test chromes and match prints.
Those were the bad old days. Now with all the automatic stuff shut off, I shoot aperature weighted, set the f-stop I require, read the exposure's gamut and roll to full manual control if necessary. Nothing else matters. A RAW file is simply a dump of the data on the array. The white balance is what you decide later. See: RAW Contrast Control for a couple of step by step examples of shooting and manipulating RAWs to your perfection. It is also collected into my Flickr set at: RAW Layers.
I have a lot of folks who drop by for photography and Photoshop lessons; exposure and color are a common thread. When I see automatic exposures of scenics served up at 1/2400th of a second, I know the shooters understand none of photography's principles. Nevertheless, there was always one tool that could be useful for matching the lighting and balance to the original. That is - adding a test target like this in the original shot for shooting bracketed exposures. There is even less reason to avoid using this with digital cameras. When you are working in Photoshop, use the original for reference in correcting balance and density. That's a can of cake. (or piece of cake)

Ex-engineers turned coffee roasters Phil and Sebastian use temperature probes to measure coffee bean surface temperature and ambient roasting temperature to track and control small batch roasting to produced their ideal light roast.
For a science nerd, this part was a fun watch. Also that the roasting engineer (?) in charge had a set up that almost made him look like a DJ.
Party time!

This is a chart made for my humanities class about numbers. I've been keeping track of how many steps I take every day, and also the amount of money I spend on food. Here, the statistics have been rendered psychedelic.
I've never bothered to share this kind of chart here, but I've never received so many views of my photos in one day. Thank you all for taking the time to check out my photos up close. I will post more soon.
Why would I even care about a picture like this? Only because I saw this in a dream and would like to know what it might mean. Her face in just this position but with her current shorter hair. The natal chart around her like this with all 12 Zodiac symbols. I didn't even know this was a natal chart and do not believe in astrology. The chart in the dream had the Libra sign at the 9 o'clock position on a clock and the Taurus at the 5 o'clock position on a clock. I heard her speaking and saw this on TV in the dream. Info on Zodiac signs here: jksalescompany.com/dw/zodiacsigns.html
The numbers on this chart are in a different order than a clock. I am sure this dream all means something, I just am not sure what. The Libra is near the 5 here and the Taurus[bull] near the 11. I have published this in order to get input, insight, comments from you.
