Charli XCX at Pitchfork Music Festival. I'm not a huge fan of pop music but there was a really tall guy who got in front of me right before I took this shot (I was there in my spot in the photopit way before him) and therefore I had to spend an hour on this shot just editing out his big head. He could have easily stood behind me but he just basically didn't care. I guess I didn't exist to him.

Charli XCX opened the concert with an energetic act. She got the crowds excited and put on a great, but short show. I was not familiar with her as an artist, but I knew most of her songs from hearing them on the radio. I often like a song, but never know who is singing it.

No professional cameras were allowed, so I bought a little Canon Powershot with 25x zoom......did the best I could.

We're Here: Iconic Musician Photographs

Charli XCX

English popstress Charlotte Aitchison – aka Charli XCX – played the second headline show of her Sucker tour at West London’s Shepherd's Bush Empire in support of her sophomore major label album and it was clear from the outset that she’s here to take the pop world by storm with her synth-pop licks and London attitude.

Starting to compile her first album at the tender age of just 14, XCX (a moniker taken from her instant messenger name at the time) worked hard, writing, recording and playing shows from such a young age. But it wasn’t until she co-wrote hit song I Love It, which was recorded and released by Swedish pop duo Icona Pop, that she stared breaking into the mainstream. That hit was quickly followed up by her major label debut album True Romance.

And while True Romance wasn’t the hit record expected, Aitchison is back with its follow-up, which she worked on with the likes of American rockers Weezer and Vampire Weekend but which seemingly takes her in a more upbeat direction than her debut.

With the stage hidden behind a curtain featuring a pink female hand with an extended middle finger, XCX-Iggy Azalea collaboration track Fancy had the audience singing along with every word even before the 22-year-old appeared on stage. And as the curtain dropped, exposing a huge red heart emblazoned with the word ‘Sucker’ next to a high drum riser with drummer Debbie Knox-Hewson behind the kit, the evening’s heroine stepped through a cloud of smoke lit up with bright lights and clad in a zebra-print, sequined outfit as she kicked off the set with new album title track Sucker.

Flying along the front of the stage, XCX whipped the crowd into a frenzy as she shouted out the verses of the opener with her audience screaming back the chorus – “Fuck you, sucker!” Her all female band – the aptly-named Charli’s Angels – exuded their front woman’s attitude and energy while clad in their appropriately sparkling angel outfits with wings to boot.

Breaking Up was next but it was a rendition of XCX-penned Icona Pop hit I Love It which followed that had the crowd singing and jumping along to every word. New single Famous followed before she launched into pre-Sucker single SuperLove that was mysteriously absent from the final record.

“I’m always nervous about playing London”, the 22-year-old stated. “But you’re making me feel at home!” “This is the biggest venue I’ve played in London” she later claimed, looking out at the 2000-strong crowd spread across the four levels of the Shepherd's Bush Empire.

Unfortunately advocating underage drinking, the singer-songwriter asked of the crowd “who here is drunk?” before realising that the majority of her audience were under the legal drinking age. She then asked “who here is under 18 and drunk?” “Cool” she extended, following an overwhelming response.

XCX invited former bandmate and the night’s support act Holly Hardy aka CuckooLander back to the stage for a duet. Throwbacks to True Romance were granted their space in the middle of the set with outings for Black Roses and Stay Away. A cover of obscure Swedish punk hit Allergic to Love was also thrown into the mix with the pop princess warning the crowd ahead of time that she didn’t usually play it as it scares people.

Usual main set-closer Gold Coins came and went but XCX remained on stage. “You’ve been an amazing audience” she said, “so I think you deserve a special treat”. English singer Rita Ora then appeared on stage before the two launched into the XCX-penned duet Doing It.

Final track of the night Boom Clap, which featured on the soundtrack to film The Fault in Our Stars, left the audience in an upbeat and satisfied mood as they exited the West London venue.

While it’s clear to see the pop-appeal of Charli XCX, the bigger mystery is why she is not already commanding venues such as the vastly larger Brighton Dome and Brixton Academy rather than their smaller siblings the Concorde 2 and Shepherd’s Bush Empire. But perhaps, following her recent opening slot for the European leg of Katy Perry’s Prismatic tour, a slot at Chicago’s Lollapalooza festival this summer and hit Fancy with contemporary Iggy Azalea, her message is finally reaching the audiences it is intended for.
