Charles Bridge (Czech: Karlův most [ˈkarluːf ˈmost] (About this soundlisten)) is a historic bridge that crosses the Vltava river in Prague, Czech Republic. Its construction started in 1357 under the auspices of King Charles IV, and finished in the beginning of the 15th century. The bridge replaced the old Judith Bridge built 1158–1172 that had been badly damaged by a flood in 1342. This new bridge was originally called Stone Bridge (Kamenný most) or Prague Bridge (Pražský most) but has been "Charles Bridge" since 1870. As the only means of crossing the river Vltava (Moldau) until 1841, Charles Bridge was the most important connection between Prague Castle and the city's Old Town and adjacent areas. This "solid-land" connection made Prague important as a trade route between Eastern and Western Europe. (Wikipedia)
Prague, Czech Republic. Legend has it that construction began on at 5:31am on 9 July 1357 (1357 9 7 531) because the Holy Roman Emperor was a believer of numerology and in his view this precise time (a palindromic number) would give the bridge additional strength.

The Custom House was built in 1683 when the town was a major port. Designed by architect Henry Bell and built by John Turner it overlooks Lynn's medieval Hanseatic League harbour.

Charles Bridge (Karlův most) is a 14th century stone bridge linking the two sides of Prague. This magnificent structure, one of the city's finest attractions, lies on the main pedestrian route connecting the Old Town with the Lesser Town and Prague Castle.
From Charles Bridge visitors can enjoy fairy-tale views of Prague. The wide expanse of the Vltava River flows beneath it, flanked on both sides by elegant buildings. And Prague Castle towers above in its eminent position. Here you are truly in the centre of the city.
Charles Bridge throngs with people during the day. Street artists sketch and musicians play; look out for the jazz band, who are particularly entertaining. But for a truly romantic and less crowded stroll, try early morning or any time in the evening.
King Charles IV commissioned the bridge. The foundation stone was laid in 1357. Charles IV's favourite architect and builder, Peter Parler, oversaw the majority of the work. The initial idea was to build a functional construction for knight tournaments, and for many years the only decoration on the bridge was a simple crucifix. Later, the Catholic desire for ornamentation resulted in 30 statues being erected between 1600 and 1800.
There are now 75 statues on Charles Bridge, but most are copies, as floods and catastrophes over the centuries damaged the originals. Perhaps the most interesting, as well as the oldest, is that of John of Nepomuk (8th from the right as you cross towards Prague Castle).
The entrance to Charles Bridge is marked at both ends by towers: the Old Town Bridge Tower and the Lesser Town Bridge Tower.
Charles Fort is a star fort located on the water's edge, at the southern end of the village of Summer Cove, on Kinsale harbour, County Cork, Ireland. James' Fort is located on the other side of the harbour.
Charles Fort is built on the site of an earlier stronghold known as Ringcurran Castle, which featured prominently during the Siege of Kinsale in 1601. The fort, which is named after Charles II was built in the 1670s and 1680s to a star fortification design - a layout specifically designed to resist attack by cannon.
The fort was relinquished by British forces following the Anglo-Irish Treaty, but it fell out of use after being burned by the retreating anti-Treaty forces during the Irish Civil War in 1922. The complex was named a National Monument of Ireland in 1971 and has been partly restored by Dúchas, the Irish heritage service.
Inside the fort is really special and I put some images from previous visits in comments if you're interested. Also view the Album Kinsale, I always visit every time I come home. I just love this colorful little town. Continuing our tour down this little gravel path a great place to walk and get a look at this side of the fort, especially on a nice sunny day. :-)
The statues of John of Matha, Felix of Valois and Saint Ivan are outdoor sculptures by Ferdinand Brokoff, installed on the south side of the Charles Bridge in Prague, Czech Republic.

This photo was taken a few years ago on a pre-Christmas trip to one of my best top destinations ever, beautiful Prague... It is not only that my Grandmother was a Czech but the City is so well-fraught with wit, this Slavic spirit that makes both Slavic and non-Slavic visitors alike feel like home...Added by famous second-to-none Bohemian humour (just remember My Sweet Little Village by Jiří Menzel nominated for the Academy Award, or Jaroslav Hašek's satire The Good Soldier Schweik which is the most translated novel of Czech literature) not to mention some of the most impressive pieces of architecture, numerous theaters and squares providing venues for jazzers playing in the open-air, teamed with the world-renowned beer, and greasy and unhealthy but extremely delicious noodles with bacon bits, this is a feeling no one should miss experiencing ...
Having purchased my Canon EOS 550D just a couple of months previously, little did I know then what proper night photography was. I just stood there fascinated by the scene and thrilled to witness one of the world's most photographed sights best known for being the location from the first Mission Impossible movie. If I hadn't been a total photographic beginner then, I'd never have dared take this photo in such a lighthearted and easy going way and, of course, without a tripod (still don't have one :)...and it turns out I'd got a beginner's luck...Well, I took it anyway, and now I'm glad I did because whenever I see it I feel like going there again...and now i do have one reason more to do so...and delight in that all around at-home-like feeling once again...:)
Key word: mission impossible.:).. Cheers, my friends!

The bridge is 516 metres (1,693 ft) long and nearly 10 metres (33 ft) wide. Following the example of the Stone Bridge in Regensburg, it was built as a bow bridge with 16 arches shielded by ice guards. It is protected by three bridge towers, two on the Lesser Quarter side (including the Malá Strana Bridge Tower) and one on the Old Town side, the Old Town Bridge Tower. The bridge is decorated by a continuous alley of 30 statues and statuaries, most of them baroque-style, originally erected around 1700, but now all have been replaced by replicas.
