It currently ranks third in size after Kruger National Park and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. I spent four consecutive days within the park which provided an amazing variety of wildlife.

The pale chanting goshawk is an opportunistic raptor and eats a wide variety of prey including small mammals, lizards, birds, large insects and carrion. It has also been recorded predating upon Tent tortoise and Leopard tortoise hatchlings which are swallowed whole while the shell is still soft. There is some evidence of social hunting in breeding groups but solitary hunting is the norm. Pale chanting goshawks commonly associate with foraging Honey badgers and feed on organisms that are flushed by the Honey badger's feeding activity. This association increases the hunting opportunities and prey capture success of the pale chanting goshawk while the honey badger does not suffer any loss of foraging efficiency. (Wikipedia)

As we were speeding down the dirt road, I noticed something perched on a fallen tree and shouted for the driver to stop and back up. The light was getting really low by then, but I was able to pick out this Dark Chanting Goshawk and make a few images in the fleeting light.

He`s looking quite fetching in his striped pantaloons. I spotted him sitting on a fence post, so I took a shot of him . But then to my surprise he jumped down & came a bit closer .Perhaps he was sizing me up for a meal .

A group of women sit beside the waters of the holy pond as the lights come on inside the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar.The most magical time of the day.
I cannot express the sense of peace and tranquility that envelops you as you sit here listening to the holy chantings and kirtans (hymns), all the while mesmerized by the beauty of this holy shrine.

I first saw this southern pale chanting goshawk (melierax canorus) perched high in a tree. Having no prior experience of their hunting habits, I was surprised at just how low to the ground it flew. It flew this low for some time searching, I assume, for the lizards, small mammals, small birds and large insects on which it preys. I later discovered that the bird often walks on the ground when hunting. Photographed in The Kalahari, Botswana. The dark chanting goshawk is a bird of prey in the family Accipitridae which is found across much of sub-Saharan Africa and southern Arabia, with an isolated and declining population in southern Morocco.
At 4.00 am the temple wakes up. The monks meditate for one hour, followed by one hour of chanting. Then at 6.00 am, the monks walk barefoot around the neighborhood, while the locals “make merit” by offering them food. At 8.00 am, they return to the temple and sit together for breakfast.
The young novice monk (in the photo above) is heading out to collect "merit". Over his shoulder is what is sometimes called a "begging bowl" - used for carrying donations of food.

Driving around the Okonjima Nature Reserve, we saw this juvenile pale chanting goshawk perched on a branch.
Le Monestir de Montserrat est une abbaye bénédictine, en Catalogne, Espagne.
Décidée en 1944, la construction de la Salle du trône derrière le maître-autel, accessible par une porte à droite de l’atrium qui conduit à une série de chapelles puis à un escalier menant à la statue Vierge noire, fut dirigée par l'architecte Francesc Folguera et le peintre Josep Obiols. Elle a nécessité le travail des sculpteurs, architectes, artistes et bijoutiers et a duré jusqu’en 1954.
Cette Vierge noire, aussi surnommée Moreneta, est devenue la patronne de la Catalogne en 1881. Dans la Salle du Trône, qui lui sert d'écrin, les portes sont en argent repoussé. La Vierge Noire elle-même est assise sur un trône d'argent incroyablement orné. De chaque côté de la Vierge, vous apercevrez neuf lampes en argent représentant les huit diocèses de Catalogne et de Montserrat. Au-dessus de la tête de la Vierge, des anges. Les murs sont recouverts de mosaïques et représentent la Vierge dans différentes incarnations symboliques comme mère des apôtres, de la Catalogne, des moines, des pèlerins, etc.
La statue de la Moreneta (signifiant Noiraude en catalan) tient une boule, symbole de l'univers, dans sa main droite. De sa main gauche, elle présente Jésus assis sur elle. Selon la légende, saint Luc sculpta cette petite statue en bois à Jérusalem en l'an 50 et saint Pierre l'apporta en Catalogne. Toutefois, une datation au carbone 14 suggère qu'elle date du 12e siècle. Dissimulée pendant l'époque de la domination maure, elle fut miraculeusement retrouvée par des bergers dans une grotte de la montagne renommée la Santa Cova (Sainte Grotte). De nombreux miracles sont associés à la Moreneta.
Culminant à 1236 m d'altitude, le monastère de Montserrat est le centre religieux le plus cher au cœur des Catalans. Sur le site d'un ermitage du 8e siècle des moines bénédictins fondèrent en 1025, sous l'égide de l'abat Oliba, évêque de Vic, une abbaye qui devint indépendante en 1409. La communauté qui, dès le 11e siècle, acquit une grande importance religieuse, connut son apogée au 15e siècle grâce à sa Vierge noire, ou Moreneta surnommée la "Mère des Catalans".
Ce lieu de pèlerinage s'impose donc dès le Moyen Âge comme le premier sanctuaire marial de Catalogne. Selon la légende racontée dans le Virolai de Montserrat, chant de louange à la Vierge de Montserrat, des anges découpèrent le massif de Montserrat avec une scie en or (d'où l'étymologie populaire de Montserrat, « Mont-scié » car la silhouette dentée du massif évoque la lame dentée d'une scie) pour abriter la statue de la Vierge et l'abbaye. Cette légende est donc à l'origine du symbole héraldique de Montserrat : une scie, tantôt tenue par des anges et tantôt seule, mais toujours au-dessus d'un dessin de rochers stylisés.
Les troupes napoléoniennes détruisirent la majeure partie du monastère en 1811. Reconstruit en 1844, le monastère fut sous le régime franquiste un des symboles de la défense de la culture catalane. Durant la Guerre civile espagnole, les moines doivent quitter le monastère. Vingt-trois trouveront la mort durant la guerre. L'abbaye de Monserrat est épargnée de justesse du pillage et de la destruction. Les moines y retournent en 1939. Aujourd'hui, il abrite toujours une communauté bénédictine.
