Day 22 of 365 – MAKE YOUR OWN FORTUNE

It’s funny how you can think about an idea at one point in time; stow it away; then utilize its full capacity later in life. They say that we only use approx 10 percent of our brains. Imagine what we could accomplish if we could harness even an additional 40 percent! Medicine, technology, politics, peace; all things as we know them would be completely different. Knowing life as we know it; it hard to fathom what it would consist of if we were able to utilize the human brain in its entirety. As long as there is a thirst for knowledge and creativity; the conquest to unlock our minds will continue.

A famous person in history once said,

“I don't want to capture the world, I want to change it!”

…My sentiments EXACTLY!

I *know* this is totally uncool, especially because I have been off and on so much this year and because I put it in all the groups that are the coolest ;) But this is important.

Remember her? Well she's shaving her head to raise money for St.Baldricks again this year!! (Joey wants to keep her hair and grow it) I was so stunned when she said she wanted to do it again., I even tried to talk her out of it. But she has a mind of her own and she wants to help the world. Actually her words "I am going to change the world Mom" Her character stuns me. She is an 8 yo girl in a world where mean girls and cliques and GASP boys surround her already and yet she shows so much bravery and conviction. I hope one day I can grow up to be just like her.

So if you could spare even just a $1.00, I would you owe you everything to see that smile she has when she checks her page.

(FTR, I'm shaving too ;) but I haven't raised anything compared to her.)

I don't know if you remember last year but their school broke a record and raised $89,000. when all was said and done. Well this year we have already raised $88,000 and there is still a week to go. There are close to 100 shavees, in a small school. The goal is 100k. Do you realize how many kids that will help?!

(from Wikipedia)

Asperger syndrome (pronounced /ˈæspɚgɚ ˌsɪndroʊm/, also called Asperger's syndrome, Asperger's disorder, Asperger's or AS) is one of several autism spectrum disorders (ASD) characterized by difficulties in social interaction and by restricted, stereotyped interests and activities. AS is distinguished from the other ASDs in having no general delay in language or cognitive development. Although not mentioned in standard diagnostic criteria, motor clumsiness and atypical use of language are frequently reported.[1][2]

Asperger syndrome is named after Austrian pediatrician Hans Asperger who, in 1944, described children in his practice who lacked nonverbal communication skills, failed to demonstrate empathy with their peers, and were physically clumsy. Fifty years later, AS was recognized in the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10), and in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) as Asperger's Disorder. Questions about many aspects of AS remain: for example, there is lingering doubt about the distinction between AS and high-functioning autism (HFA);[3] partly due to this, the prevalence of AS is not firmly established. The exact cause of AS is unknown, although research supports the likelihood of a genetic basis, and brain imaging techniques have identified structural and functional differences in specific regions of the brain.

There is no single treatment for Asperger syndrome, and the effectiveness of particular interventions is supported by only limited data. Intervention is aimed at improving symptoms and function. The mainstay of treatment is behavioral therapy, focusing on specific deficits to address poor communication skills, obsessive or repetitive routines, and clumsiness. Most individuals with AS can learn to cope with their differences, but may continue to need moral support and encouragement to maintain an independent life.[4] Researchers and people with AS have contributed to a shift in attitudes away from the notion that AS is a deviation from the norm that must be treated or cured, and towards the view that AS is a difference rather than a disability.[5]

changing the world: lemonade

The top book is by the founder of Room to Read, a non-profit that supplies books & scholarships, builds libraries and schools in mostly southeast asia. It is an inspiring story of the power of the individual to change his/her course in life and to inspire others to join him in making the world a better place. There are so many lessons in this book for life and business. I HIGHLY recommend it. And yes Mom, I'm sending it to you this week. :)

On a side note...the pictures that follow this one, are of a party that I went to that raised $10,000. 1/2 of which went to Room to Read.

Our youngest came back from the world jamboree in Sweden today.

And.... yes he also changed, just like our oldest. A human who talked to other guys and girls of his own age from all over the world. An awesome experience!!!!

And I believe this makes the difference, meet other people! Talk to them! Respect their opion, respect their believe, the way they live!

The stories will come, he will tell us later, much more than he told us just yet. Now..... a shower and his bed :-)

a meaningful life. Being a nurse.

I snapped this today as I was playing with this little guy while his mom was applying for child support. It was really hard for her. Every day I see so many people doing their best in the face of adverse social, economic and cultural difficulties. I get frustrated when they make decisions which are incomprehensible to my middle class values.

I cheer when they make progress toward their dreams. But mostly I am amazed at what they give back to me. Their hospitality, and kindness

I was going to dump the shot because it is such a blurry reflection, but when I cropped it, I noticed that I had gotten my city's icon, the Pagoda in it, so it stays!
