He HATES getting his diaper changed. And this is his reaction before it even STARTS!

We couldn't paint the walls in our apartment so I painted & cut out these marine animals. (They didn't say anything about putting numerous nails in the wall) I had my family members each paint a school fish also. We didn't know the sex of our child in advance so we chose a gender neutral theme. There are still a few that need to be painted, it is much harder to do so now that Ethan has arrived.

I got a few hours sleep this morning while Emily nursed and we got intermittent visits from nurses. We kept having trouble getting the little dude to nurse properly. Letting him grab my finger seemed to calm him down during the struggle. My ability to calm him down got Emily frustrated, until Amanda laid down the truth: “To be fair, he’s known you for 9 months. Brad is still a novelty.” Well put.

I rushed home to let Arri out around 9am–she hadn’t been out since 5pm yesterday, but she was a champ. I gave her a little walk and got the mail. That trip was surprisingly rough; my back has been killing me still, and it is not fun. Mom and Dad brought us donuts this morning and hung out for a good while. We ended up bringing in another lactation specialist after they left, and I think we’re finally getting to a good place.

Croz left to get his pencil sharpened at 12:30, which was a pretty quick deal. We went back and forth a lot on that one. Hopefully it’s all good!

Audrey and David came to visit us for awhile this afternoon. It got to a point where we weren’t really sure what we were sitting around waiting for. We’d long since passed the 24-hour mark since Crosby was born, so what was going on? I went and asked the desk people and they said they’d been trying to get a hold of Dr. Noble all day so he could come in and discharge us. Weird…

Around 5pm, the doctor arrived, dressed in street clothes, to discharge us. He literally walked in, asked if we were ready to go, shook our hands, and asked us to have a happy 4th, before leaving to start the discharge process. Then a nurse came and offered a rubella vaccination. The discharge papers came at 6, and we finally left at 7pm, 62½ hours after arriving at the hospital.

Mom, Dad, Audrey, David, Kitty, and Taylor all came over to the house right away. They made us brats and stuff for dinner which was super nice and helpful! By 9pm the party had subsided and we got cleaned up for our first night at the house.

After having a baby, it is your responsibility to clean up after him. After seeing one of these in a new Men's restroom in 1982, I knew the 80s were going to be different from the 70s.

Everything is painted with Benjamin Moore's Aura paint in a satin finish; the dresser drawer pulls are glass, and we found them online for less than the similar plastic ones you can buy at most home stores.

Oh, and your eyes don't deceive; the changing table top is pushed just off-center to the left, so it overhangs the radiator a bit more than the diaper trash container. This weekend, I'll build a quick radiator top cover that'll extend back into the windowsill just behind that radiator, giving us a nice surface for stuff like wipes and diapers.

Currently, there are no Friends figures on LDD...

So I made do with a minifig 'baby' on the changing table!

Carolyn had no idea why there was a whole wall of toilet paper in the bathroom at the bar. They weren't even in the stalls, it was the wall in the main section of the bathroom!

BACKSTORY: Carolyn's work had a happy hour, and then afterward, Carolyn went over to Kim's for a date.

6 weeks left and all we need in this room is a baby =)

The swing will probably stay in the living room or wherever we need him to chill out. Hehe.

Mom: This was one of my favorites of Tommy, because he was stretching. And he used to do that a lot, just stretch out.

Just off the South Lawn on the way to the exit, I saw two porta-changing stations.

Naturally, the woman to the left thought I was insane.

First off, thanks for all the kind wishes regarding my cat. I think those that own pets can understand what I'm going through. Nyla was a member of my family and we loved her for 7.5 years. Today I brought her in to be put to sleep and it was among the saddest things I have ever experienced, right up there with the loss of my grandparents and dear cousins. We are blessed with friends that helped us through today as well as getting to come home to our little man, who you can't be sad around 100% of the time.

On another, happier, note. When I deal with grief I like to get stuff done. I am not a "Earthy" chick. However, I do love to save money. That was my primary reason to start cloth diapering (Also, an easy way for Q-man to wear green for St. Patrick's day). I've wanted to venture into the world of reusable wipes for some time now, mainly because it sucks to have to throw one part of the diaper in a diaper bag and another in the diaper genie (the disposable wipes). Today I inherited about 40 or so washcloths that are perfect for what I want so I created a wipe solution from a recipe I found online, washed my new wipes, and will be ready to start tomorrow. However, I will not be using these on poo diapers. I'm not ready for that challenge.

Decided to go with a dresser for the changing table. The drawers are loaded up with clothes of all sizes, blankets, and extra diapers, wipes, etc. It's a great way to store extra stuff since our closets aren't that big. Thanks again for all the love and support. If you haven't seen pics from the baby shower take a peek if you like.

Note the orange mat on the floor - that's for Haley. I think she'll spend a lot of time guarding Baby Lettau.

I also took some video. Take a peek if you like.

Major thanks has to go to my dad for repainting the room and putting together the crib and to my mom and sister for doing a lot of the decorating while I was at work. I couldn't have gotten anything done without all of you!

Sadly, Poltz is almost too big for the changing table. What a fatty.

This is where Poltz hangs out during the day. It's a real good time to enter the nursery with a crying baby who wants his diaper changed in one hand and have to shoo away a 17 lb. cat with the other.

October 13

I had breakfast with Audrey, David, and Emily before the elders headed home. We’ve been watching a couple of Mom and Dad’s dogs while they’ve been out of town. This morning Holly sat and stared at Emily and Croz for awhile in the nursery, which was an interesting blend of cute and weird. We took the pooches back this afternoon, literally minutes after my people got home with Granny. We had a good hang! She was very excited to see Croz.

I left a bit early so I could go see Acid Carousel at Rubber Gloves. It was my first time there since the big renovation. It’s so much better, and so much different now! The entry door moved, the bar moved, there are nice little hangout pockets scattered around… it’s a nice spot. The group I was with ended up being a lot larger: Kara, Rose, Noelle, Jordan, and Amy. I’m pretty much brand new friends with most of them, but we had a good time and got along great. Unfortunately, the band was not at its best, according to those familiar. It was my first time seeing them, and it was not at all similar to what I’ve been listening to online. Apparently they were missing several band members, and they were trying to lean into the musical vibe the other bands had, which I guess was messy noise. Bummer.

My beautiful niece. Born October 1st :)

She's getting so big!

I've been utterly hankering for this changing table for months. We have a tiny apartment, with no room for a conventional changing table (not even one of those ones you hang on the wall), and anyway, we have differing ideas about where the best place for a changing table is, so a changing table that's foldable and very easy to move around seemed like a good idea. And most importantly, really, I just absolutely loved the way this thing looked in photos. Something so calm and simple about it, and yet that beautifully shaped rich-coloured wood is so warm. I think Scott would have chosen a different one, but he good-naturedly went along with my strange lust for this particular item.

Now unfortunately this New Zealand-made changing table isn't for sale in Europe, and I couldn't find anywhere in the US or the Antipodes that would ship it to Norway. Neither could I find a shop in Chicago that actually had them on display, though Land of Nod had the Cariboo bassinets. So I ordered it online while we're here in Chicago, and we'll just have to ship it to Norway ourselves.

It arrived today, and with great eagerness, I put it together as soon as FedEx had dropped it off. Sure, we'll have to take it apart again to ship it but I had to see how beautiful it looked!

Except. I'm not sure I love it as much as in the photos. Actually, looking at the photo I took of it, I still think it looks great. But in real life it's so big, and the cloth is such a very stark white, and it seems so concave, and a bit flimsy, though that might just be because I haven't tightened the bolts as I would if I weren't about to take it apart and pack it up again.

We've decided it's fine. We'd damn well better think it's fine, given what we paid for it ($259 + whatever it costs to mail it to Norway...) But we might end up getting a different changing table when we move to a bigger place.

I guess we won't really know how we like it until the baby's here.
