"Racey days...Help me through the hopeless haze. But my tragic eyes...I can't even recognise myself behind ...So if the answer is no... Can I change your mind"

The number of poor Indonesians, those with less than than $1.90 a day, has declined radically from 63 million in 2006 to just under 6 million in 2017, but a November 2015 report by the World Bank concluded that only the top 20% of Indonesian’s were benefiting from the country’s economic growth. Farmers like Samsul are caught in low-paying jobs as the wealth gap widens. There was great optimism the country’s poorer, rural regions, who voted overwhelmingly for Jokowi in 2014 and again in 2019, but his policies don’t appear to be benefiting them. When asked what the president is doing to help potato farmers, Samsul responds only with, “No comment”. /////

17 words for Wes Anderson: Precision

"I heard that music came from out of space.

We had it cast upon the human race.

I heard the future from afar.

We heard the past, from a distant star.

I saw the patterns in the sky.

We saw our only chance passing by.

I saw the people change to cope.

We saw a distant space of love and hope."

Un lienzo en blanco lleno de posibilidades...

Don't look outside the window.

Step back and hear i'm calling.

Give up, don't take the busload.

It's just your debt that binds you.

Just drop the stocks behind you, now.

Change your mind. Let go too soon.

During his first term, Indonesia’s President Widodo focused on expanding infrastructure and social programs. In March 2019 Jakarta’s first subway opened, part of a larger mass-rail transit network, and money has also poured into Indonesia’s highway system. While inaugurating a newly expanded section of the Trans Java toll road, Widodo claimed it would help people reach their destinations faster and encourage tourism. But none of this seemed to help Irsyad get back home to Dieng and visit his parents from Jakarta where he studies design. “It took 16 hours by bus”, he says unenthusiastically. In the picture, a potato farmer in Dieng.

...Como una ventana que nos muestra el mundo tal y como lo queremos ver...

Help me through the hopeless haze

But my oh my...

“There’s no future in potatoes”, says Irsyad’s mother, Rahma, herself a potato farmer. Dieng’s farmers are facing a loosing battle, partially because of soil erosion and the overuse of fertilizers and pesticides. There are also limited markets for their produce. While Widodo’s government nationalized the world’s biggest gold and copper mine in Paupa and cut out foreign oil and gas companies to the benefit of Indonesia’s state-owned Pertamina, none of McDonald’s 170 restaurants in Indonesia serve french fries made from potatoes grown in Dieng (or anywhere else in Southeast Asia for that matter).

Tourism in Dieng is up, but probably not due to the toll road, which is more than 50 kilometers away. Nevertheless, Irsayad’s father Untoro is happy for the small uptick and the chance to earn extra cash as a driver, chauffeuring guests to see ancient Hindu temples. The family even walled up half of their spacious living room to create two additional guest rooms they rent to tourists. Rahma estimates that earnings from tourism now account for about 25% of their total income.

"Whatever you hold in your mind

will tend to occur in your life.

If you continue to believe

as you have always believed,

you will continue to act

as you have always acted.

If you continue to act

as you have always acted,

you will continue to get

what you have always gotten.

If you want different

results in your life,

all you have to do

is change your mind."

Stanno sempre a ripensarci, sono quasi peggio di noi umani. Però sono più veloci.

They keep on changing their mind, almost harder than us. But they're just quicker

Dear unknown farm worker: Even though I was too lazy to discover your name, thank you for letting me take your picture. Thank you for waking up before sunrise, for sweating in the hot sun, for busting your butt in the mud and dirt. Now that I think about it, I’m ashamed. I’m embarrassed that I enjoy your delicious vegetables and fruits without considering that you don’t earn enough to send your kids to a good school. You take out loans to grow my food, although I never help out when the crops are lost during a storm. You don’t have job security and barely make enough to survive on. Dieng, Indonesia

There you are with your perfect way

You've got that little shine in your eyes

To hear one word would make my day

But there's no room for me in your life

Oh, you've got me down on,my knees

Oh, in my mind I can see

How perfect everything could be

But you won't give us a try

[chorus]

If i could chance your mind

how would you want me

would you say you need me

cause i need you now

I try to move on but your perfect way

has got this little chind asking why

but this world keep sppining

As my heart stop beating

is there still no room inside

[chorus]

If i could chance your mind

how would you want me

would you say you need me

cause i need you now

If i could chance your mind

(please tell me, I'm not the only one)

(please help me believe, I'm not the only one)

If i could chance your mind

If i could chance your mind

how would you want me

would you say you need me

cause i need you now

If i could chance your mind

how would you hold me

would you stay forever

or just leave me here to drown

If I could change your mind

(change your mind)

If i could chance your mind

(chance your mind)

Not liking needles or pain, I waited a really, really long time to get my ears pierced!

Some people do this to celebrate a special occasion (like turning 12). Many cultures pierce the ears of 1-week old baby girls (solving the "I wonder if that's a girl" problem). Some piercings are done to emphasize a rebellion or make a statement.

I did this for no particular occasion or reason...except that a friend at work gave me a pair of earrings last week, not realizing I've never had pierced ears. And I'm just tired of not being able to wear earrings that look nice and don't pinch your ears the whole time you wear them. These "diamond" squares do remind me of my sister Terri, who always wore pretty earrings. The more I've thought about this, I've also come to the conclusion that this fairly radical move does, in fact, reaffirm my core belief that it is NEVER too late to change your mind and go a different road.

Four friends, all in their 20s, opened Dieng’s first coffee shop, Kedai Dieng, in 2016. Although they’re only open on the weekends when tourists are in town, they still dream of expanding and promoting coffee beans grown on the Dieng Plateau all around the world, says one of the partners, Mohammad Didin. He is a recent graduate from Universitas Sains Al-Qur'an (UNSIQ) and studied “Islamic Economics”. As midday prayers blare out from loudspeakers in the mosque next door, Mohammad turns the cafe’s music off out of respect.

Six million Indonesian’s still live on less than $1.60 a day (2017) and represent the largest group of poor Muslims in all of Southeast Asia. This makes the importance of President Widodo’s Presidency so important to the stability of the entire region. If he is unable to radically lift up the lives poor Indonesians in Dieng, the electorate may seek more radical politicians. A radical Islamic politician following Widodo in 2024 is just as possible as Trump following Obama.

In a few weeks, when Indonesia’s president Joko Widodo is inaugurated for a second five-year term, Samsul Muhdi will be harvesting his potato crop. Samsul belongs to a small community of Javanese farmers living at 2000 meters above sea level on the Dieng Plateau, a series of ancient volcano craters with the perfect climate for growing subtropical-highland vegetables such as cabbage, tobacco and potatoes. “I like my president, but the harvest price is down,” Samsul says, peering at misty land that has been in his family for three generations.

Have you lost/gained weight?

“Wow, are you sure you can eat all that?”

“I wish I was as skinny as you!”

A person's self-esteem may be damaged by comments made about their physical appearance, including their weight, height, or attractiveness. Even while they are not always meant to be hurtful, these remarks are unnecessary and sometimes end up doing more harm than good. The words people use carelessly can be utterly misunderstood, and they may not even mean what they think they do. People may experience insecurities, loss of confidence, and even body shame as a result of this. We can never know what someone else is dealing with or what insecurities they might or might not have. Others may become insecure and believe they need to make radical changes to themselves if you call attention to their physical qualities. We ought to pay greater attention to praises that have a deeper meaning. Using the words "I love your energy" or "I love your charisma" as an example. More relevant comments are made about personality than about beauty. For more mental health concerns, please reach out to us at www.happitudestudio.com/
