We had always heard about the beauty of Amarnath Yatra trek. We are not religious per se, but we believe in the spirituality of nature. It is not a mere coincidence that most of the pilgrimages are located in close consonance with nature
The trek started from Chandanwari with the Lidder river beside us. The first 5 kilometres of the trek was strenuous. It was a steep climb up to Pissu top.
Pissu top, all our tiredness simply vanished. Beautiful, mesmerizing are understatements to describe the landscape. In between, the trek was relatively easier with some flat walks and meadows. Seshnag greeted us with a beautiful emerald green lake

This is on the way to Pishutop, the first peak that is crossed on the way to the holy cave at Amarnath. It is one of the steepest sections of the climb to Amarnath.
While the other devotees start their climb from a point called Chandanwari, only the sadhus start theirs from the original point at Pahalgam, 15 kms of mountain road earlier.

Journey to the Holy Amarnath Cave, a pilgrimage of a lifetime !
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva narrated the secrets of creation and of immortality to His divine consort, Parvati at this cave. While coming to this place, He left Nandi, the bull at Pahalgam, released Moon from His locks at Chandanwari, placed the thousand headed snake Seshnag at the lake Seshnag which became the resting abode of Lord Vishnu, posted His son, Lord Ganesha at Mahagunas Top as the guard, danced His cosmic dance, the TANDAVA at Panchatarani and five streams of river fell from His locks. He left behind the five elements : Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Sky at Panchatarani, entered the holy cave, created the divine fire, KALAGNI and seated with Parvati for the discussion.
The place so sacred for the Hindus was long lost in the wilderness of the Himalayas and was said to be rediscovered by a Muslim shepherd while searching for a missing lamb. Throughout the ages millions of pilgrims have visited the beautiful shrine which houses the only Ice Lingam in the world attaining its full height on the night of the full moon of month of SHRAVANA. Sages, monks and the common people alike have trekked this beautiful but tough pilgrimage route in Kashmir in search of immortality. Among others, Adi Sankaracharya, the reformer of Hinduism or Sanatan Dharma, and the great philosopher-monk-visionary Swami Vivekananda have visited the shrine.
The journe takes place from the early July to early August and the arrangements are made with advertisements and start of registration procedures a long time before that. Security arrangements along the route are also heavy as there are history of terrorist attacks in past and every year, reports of some clandestine planning of terrorists foiled by the forces are flashed in the media.
The traditional journey starts from Chandanwari (9500 ft. ) which is 16 km by car from Pahelgaon ( 96 km by road from Srinagar, the capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir in India ). From Chandanwari, one has to trek 14km to Seshnag (11730 ft. ) via Pisutop (11000 ft. ). Next day, the journey of 13km to Panchatarani (12000 ft. ) through Mahagunas pass (4.6km to M.G. Top at 14000ft and the air is thin) is an arduous trek, and one can take the rest here. The brave ones can proceed to the holy cave of Amarnath ( 13000 ft. ) on the same evening or the next day after night's rest by trekking another tough 6km and stay there. On return, one can take the steep 14 km journey to Baltal and take a car for Sonamarg ( 26km ), a small hamlet which is 87 km by road from Srinagar. The whole pilgrimage can also be done in the reverse direction with Baltal as the starting point.
Whatever the route may be, the thick and green woodlands, the ice capped mountains, the small rivers, huge glaciers, waterfalls, glacial lakes, the colour of the surroundings, the chanting of OM NAMAH SHIVAYA and the beautiful peace of mind braving the tough and often risky path towards the top in search of divinity, all end at the heightened ecstasies when the devotee falls for prayer before the absolute spirit of universe, his God, the creator, the protector and the destructor at His eternal splendour.

Hajatl, on the way to Chandanwari is an idyllic spot for a picnic. Film goers will recognize it instantly as it has been the location of several movie scenes.
