Another session of water drop shots, this time with a light cream and Xantham gum liquid mixture with mostly red colour (but I added some black and blue later on) for the drops. Man, this was tricky! It seems that with this liquid solution, even the amount of liquid in the MIOPS container has an impact on the timing of the drops so I had to alter it quite often. I used the Mirror Up function in the camera to avoid having to deal with shutter lag. Oh, and I filled the container catching the drops with the leftover Xantham gum mixture and water to the brim, exploiting the water's surface tension to hide the container's edge and get as much of an infinity feel as possible.
I used 2 Godox speedlights off-camera with the background one variying in power and main one on 1/64. The background one had a gel mounted and the other, with a softbox mounted, illuminated the drop. The background was simply varying semi-transparent plastic binders in front of a white background. ISO 200, 1/250 shutter speed and f/14. Hard-earned lesson: Even the background flash should NOT have too high power (more than 1/16 or even 1/32) - most shots were completely worthless because of motion blur and unfortunately I didn't notice this or even think of it until I saw them on the big screen…tosser I am!
Focus was achieved by standing a pen attached to a bunch of Blu Tac in the bowl so it was completely stable. With the camera switched off I fired the MIOPS Splash to see where the drop landed and then positioned the pen accordingly, with the drop landing slightly off-center towards the side facing the camera. Then I focused on the pen using autofocus to get perfect focus. I use back button focus so the camera doesn't try to focus with each shot :)
I need to do another session soon to make my flash power/motion blur failure right! I hope you enjoy the shots - I do, although I am not 100% satisfiied.
I took some more photos of tulips in the park on Saturday morning. Whenever I think that I have taken enough tulip photos now, I find another one of an interesting colour or shape. In this case it was of course the shape that fascinated me.
Neil Dawson's magnificent Chalice sculpture is located in Christchurch's Cathedral Square.
Chalice sculpture in Cathedral Square against a blue skyChalice celebrates the new millennium and the 150th Anniversary of the founding of Christchurch and Canterbury by the Canterbury Association.
Chalice is a permanent sculpture with a primary hexagonal steel structure and a solid steel conical base. 18 metres high, 2 metres in diameter at ground level and 8.5 metres in diameter at the top, its shape mirrors the spire of Christchurch Cathedral.
"It is I who made the earth
and created mankind on it.
My own hands stretched out the heavens;
I marshaled their starry hosts."
Isaiah 45:12
flowers nature sun sunlight flower petals pink light sunny weather spring bright macro summer close-up bokeh blur
I rise each day
And its just the same
I see an unending sorrow
Ploughing that same furrow
Call me
Call my name
You keep looking for false dawns
You find it hard to look beyond
I have tried to write this so many times
It didn’t want to be written
Life kept fighting my lines
But while the blood flows
Into my cup unbidden
Even though I can hardly speak
My voice feels like it has been stolen
I know this cup is the only thing that matters
No point trying to cajole or flatter
I always treated that with suspicion
Just keep me on your table
Remember me if you are able
Let this be a new dawn
Where I am no longer a pawn
Dodging things I foresworn
Yet can no longer keep

So many of us wish that life could be different for us and often with good reason. In our so-called modern times there is a harshness that seems to have settled over us.
But now is the time for us to look deeply within, and find what truly matters to us, be that faith, family, loved ones or all of these things. Sometimes our daily lives might be devoid of purpose, or we feel are bowed down with responsibilities, and seeking help is difficult.
But within all this, a light can be found. We need to seek out ways that will uphold us and give us joy. Each of us is different, but letting go of things that cannot be changed is a start. This way, new opportunities can arise, that bring peace of mind.
This image was taken in Ripe Church in East Sussex, UK. I placed this Cup from my collection onto the flagstones set in the floor, and the light streamed through a window and lit up the Cup.
As with all of my images, there is no AI involved. This is just taken by me and my camera, with my chalice cup and the beauty of the light. Why would I need anything more, because the song is in the experience, as they say.
I have paired this work with Hans Zimmer’s “Chevaliers de Sangreal” which was featured in the Da Vinci Code film, which sparked all sorts of controversy and counterclaims…which I have taken with a pinch of salt…which helps to keep demons at bay after all. But the music...the music is divine.
But in the end, the cup for me is a conduit to enable the Holy Spirit to enter, or to surround where I happen to be…but I have always loved this piece of music for the soaring quality it has, the love it encompasses, and that is enough for me.

A completely chance moment captured today in the Chalice Well Garden in Glastonbury as we sat enjoying the peace of the King Arthur's Court and Healing Pool below.
Suddenly, there appeared above what looked to me like an earth goddess, so I took this one shot only as she passed by.
It was only later that I noticed that quite by chance, the foliage of the tree was perfectly aligned with her face, creating quite an ethereal effect.

A lovely 7km walk through lush rainforest to get to this spot - best after some rain and some clearing light! The best thing about this spot was that there were no leeches in winter :)
Santa Cruz Mountains, California
Wandering off the trail, I found this alignment of trees, branches, and light.
Chalice vine (Solandra maxima) A large woody vine cultivated as an ornamental. The flowers, which open mostly at night, are large, cup-shaped, white to yellow in colour, sometimes with purple veins, and measure up to 25cm in length. The flowers are strongly perfumed at night.
This looks like an X Wife trying to poison me with a drink of WATER!!!!!
They never listen....A nice glass of Beaujolais with my cornflakes......now that's what I call a substantial breakfast.
Taken inside Liverpool Anglican Cathedral..........love my X-Wife's "boilersuit Chic".........hahahahahaha
Comments especially welcome on this one.
I spent a pleasant lunch at the Montalto Winery and Sculpture Park recently. Fortunately, it wasn't too hot and became bright after a cloudy start to the day. This sculpture is by Ben Carroll and called Poison Cup. I would say it is 2x the size of a person at least.
A bit like the political situation faced by the Federal Government following the terrible Bondi shootings and their introduction of an omnibus Bill trying to legislate against Hate Speech and Gun Control.
Hate Speech is a poison chalice in all senses of the word. I'm no politician but why both issues are covered in the one bill is worrying.
At least it doesn't have a stupid title like the US "Big Beautiful Bill"!
Happy Sliders Sunday to everyone ;o)
