A quick sketch showing the great singer Cesária Évora flying above her island in Cape Verde (Please see below some details and some other "PVsC" pictures). Cesária Évora is a Cape Verdean popular singer, nicknamed the "barefoot diva" for performing without shoes. She is perhaps the best internationally known practitioner of a mournful genre of blues music known as "Morna". Morna is based on the Portuguese fado and features bluesy vocals set against a background of acoustic guitars, fiddles, accordion, and cavaquinho, which is a small, four-string guitar. Évora has been accurately described as a cross between Edith Piaf and Billie Holiday.

Made for "Art Official Concept", a gallery in Cape Verde.

>>> Review from THE DAILY MAIL for this picture: "Up in the air: A famous woman (Cesária Évora) sits in a swing in the clouds, held aloft by two doves over a mountainous landscape" (Kerry McQueeney, The Daily Mail, Sept. 2011)

Update: See THIS VIDEO showing some 18 Pencil Vs Camera images in progress (with a small animation and an original musical composition).

e l'ascolto ... TIEMPO Y SILENCIO - Cesaria Évora

(been two years by now...)

Tiempo y silencio

Gritos y cantos

Cielos y besos

Voz y quebranto

Nacer en tu risa

Crecer en tu llanto

Vivir en tu espalda

Morir en tus brazos

Street art in Mindelo representing Cesária Évora (1941-2011), a Cape Verdean singer known for singing morna music and making it known internationally.

Exposició: Humanitats en femení: grans dones de la cultura universal

Cesaria Evora (1941-2011), cantant capverdiana: "Potser no estic gaire contenta, però tampoc no estic trista. L’alegria i la tristesa són veïnes".

The amazing Portuguese Diva of Fado fame honored the "Tribute to Cesaria Evora" show, making a guest appearance at the GAZI LIVE venue in Athens, Greece, on November 18 & 19, 2017. She is shown here, against a Cesaria Evora photo, while singing her own version of "La Boheme", playing the piano herself, acconmpanied only by a saxophone player.

Old posters on an alleyway wall in Montmartre. Proof again that travel and photography can be broadening. She made exceptional music.

Whoever lives here, works here, beyond this door, can only be happy... Don't you agree?

With the mind turned to Africa warmth...

I have done the Desert Island Challange before for Movies (see here) and this time it's the Challenge for 24 favorite albums. Here are in random order:

- ABBA : The Singles (*)

All their hits from the Swedish group ABBA, like 'Waterloo' and 'Dancing Queen'.

- Beatles : 1962-1966 (*)

Their early hits like 'Love me do' and 'She Love You' and from the two Beatles albums in my list I think this one is the best! My sister (who is 11 years older) played a lot of the Beatles when I was a kid.

- Beatles : 1967-1970 (*)

The later hits like 'Penny Lane' and 'Hey Jude'.

- Jacques Brel : 24 grootste successen (*)

The 24 biggest successes of Belgian singer Jacques Brel, like 'Ne Me Quitte Pas' and 'Marieke'.

- Carpenters : Now & Then

Their 1973 album with 'Yesterday Once More'. I have seen the Carpenters Live twice and their performance was one of the best I have ever seen. The sound was great!

- Paolo Conte : Aquaplano

Italian singer with a craggy voice, who sings/speaks/whispers songs like 'Max'.

- George Dalaras & The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra

Years ago when I was on the Greek Island of Lesbos I heard beautiful music coming from a restaurant and I went in to ask them what album they were playing. It was this album by Greek singer George Dalaras, accompanied by The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Anyone with memories of Greece and Greek Music should hear this album.

- Cesaria Evora : Miss Perfumado (*)

Cesaria Evora, a singer from Cabo Verde, always performs on her bare feet. I bought this album after seeing a music clip from the song 'Sodade' on Belgian TV. Since then I have bought this album for all my friends.

- Ella Fitzgerald : The Rodgers and Hart Songbook, volume 1 (*)

This album from the series of Songbooks Ella Fitzgerald did represents all the other series from other composers too. She was one of the best singers.

- Judy Garland : Judy at Carnegie Hall

I have this album twice. This one, the original performance and the version by Rufus Wainwright where he sang the complete concert as Judy Garland had done before him. I have seen his "Judy" concert in Paris, France.

- The Magnificent Seven : The Magnificent Seven

The Magnificent is a group of famous Dutch Pop musicians who came together to make an album of Film Music. They also did a tour with this music. They should do a "return of the Magificent Seven" album and tour!

- Bette Midler : Live at Last

My first introduction to Bette Midler was the TV broadcasting by Dutch VPRO TV of this show in Cleveland. I had never seen anything like it before and it swept me of my feet! I hope that someday they will release this show on DVD. One song from that show I'm singing myself now in my singing lessons: 'Shiver me Timbers', although I have to sing it the way Tom Waits did it (fortunately not with a voice like his). Here's Bette: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oh3BoW_a8Nc

- Platters : The Very Best of

Even in my childhood I was enchanted by the voices of the Platters. My favorite song by them is 'Twilight Time'. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpdaga8cCxU

- Queen : Greatest hits 1 (*)

Needs no introduction. 'Bohemian Rapsody' and 'Somebody to Love'.

- Rolling Stones : Hot Rocks 1 (*)

From the two Stones albums I think this one is the best, with 'Satisfaction' and 'Paint it, black'. I have seen them Live a couple of times and one of the best concerts was here in Rotterdam in the Kuip (stadium Feyenoord).

- Rolling Stones : Hot Rocks 2

More songs: 'Sympathy for the devil' and 'Jumpin' Jack Flash'.

- Paul Simon : Graceland

His 1986 album with African musicians. Best songs: 'You can call me Al' and 'Diamonds on the soles of her shoes'. During his concert in Rotterdam for the Graceland tour Ladysmith Black Mambazo were almost more popular than Mr. Simon himself. In this challenge I could also have put 'Live in Central Park' by Simon and Garfunkel.

- Theodorakis : All Time Greatest Hits

Greek composer

- Robbie Williams : Swing when you're winning

I think this album brought the songs from Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra to the youth of today. Furthermore Robbie Williams is one of the best entertainers of today!

- Frank Sinatra : His Greatest Hits / New York New York (*)

Sinatra has some great albums and I just picked one of them. It's not his best collection of songs but the best collection I have of him. One of my mother's favorites is on this album: 'Strangers in the night'.

- Ja Zuster Nee Zuster (*)

Ja Zuster Nee Zuster (Yes Nurse No Nurse) was a very popular TV series for children in the sixties on Dutch television. I still like to sing the songs from the series.

- The Producers (Original Cast)

I have seen this show in London and we went to London specially to see Nathan Lane and James Dreyfuss. That evening both actors were ill, but we had a great Lee Evans as Leo Bloom!

- Salonorkest Trocadero : Grand Cafe Concert

A small Orchestra like it would have played in the cafe's in Vienna in the beginning of the last century.

- Various artists : Burt Bacharach/ The Look of Love (*)

A collection of Bacharach songs. My favorite interpreter of his songs is Dionne Warwick, but the song 'The look of Love' is best by Dusty Springfield!

If I would have had children I would have tried them to listen to those albums above with a "(*) ". Everyone should know those albums!

My next challenge is 24 books.
