Rock Island Centennial Bridge

The Puente Centenario (Centennial Bridge) is one of the only three bridges over the Panama Canal connecting north and south America. The Panama Canal is a man-made 51-mile waterway in the Republic of Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean cutting across the Isthmus of Panama. Print Size 13x19 inches

Last Fall I had the pleasure of taking a cruise that passed from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean via the Panama Canal. This photo, taken during morning golden hour, shows the freighter that was following our ship as it passed under the Centennial Bridge.

Panama Canal (explored Pos. 59)

The Panama Canal is a man-made 51-mile waterway in the Republic of Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean cutting across the Isthmus of Panama. It is a conduit for maritime trade reducing the time for ships to travel between the two oceans. Print Size 13x19 inches.

The Oosterdam is in the Pedro Miguel Lock and being lifted 29 feet for entry into the Culebra Cut and a pass under the Centennial Bridge.

The Original Canal:

Opened in 1914. Construction started by the French and completed by the US Americans.

 

The Expansion Canal:

Opened in 2016. The expansion was coordinated by the Government of Panama.

 

Centennial Bridge:

Opened in 2004. The bridge was built by German construction firm Bilfinger.

 

The Culebra Cut:

The canal cut through the continental divide was required to connect bothe sides of the canal. The cut was started by the French and completed by the US Americans.

Starting the year off with the love of my life, Jon. This year I hope to take at least one "Sunday selfie" per month with Jon. He agreed, whew! After church, down by Centennial Bridge on the Mississippi River. We live about one block from here and LOVE the river. Quite the experience with the cell phone and selfie stick. And Jon ties his own bow ties (he's talented like that LOL)

We spent a morning going to the visitors center for the Panama Canal in Miraflores. It has a view of the canal and its operation as well as a nice museum showing the canal history and development. Once the Americans got involved in the Canal construction it took 10 years for completion back in the early part of the 20th century. When they built the newer canal along side the old canal for today's larger ships as the one shown here, it took 9 years to complete the task.

In the wee hours of the morning we boarded the tour vessel, Pacific Queen, in the area known as Flamenco Island. This picture was taken just before leaving the island.
