Prosper Mérimée, inspecteur général des Monuments Historiques
Dans ses Notes d'un voyage en Auvergne (Calmann-Levy, 1838), Prosper Mérimée, alors en déplacement dans le cadre de ses fonctions d'inspecteur général des Monuments historiques, décrivait ainsi le château d'Anjony :
"Sur la Montagne de Tournemire, il existait autrefois, dit-on, cinq châteaux possédés par cinq seigneurs différents, et ces châteaux sont autant, sinon plus rapprochés que ceux de Chauvigny. Celui d'Anjony seul reste debout ... Il est situé sur une hauteur abrupte détachée de la chaîne du Cantal, sur une espèce de cap escarpé, séparant deux vallées profondes. On y monte par une pente fort raide qui serpente longtemps au milieu des rochers. Au sommet de la montagne est un plateau de forme triangulaire, et c'est à la pointe du triangle que s'élève le château d'Anjony. Son plan très régulier représente un petit carré flanqué à chaque angle d'une grosse tour ronde. Ses courtines sont très étroites et, de même que les tours couronnées de machicoulis... Deux grandes salles , l'une au dessus de l'autre, occupent le carré compris entre les courtines; dans trois tours il y a des chambres en communication avec ces grandes salles, la quatrième tour sert de cage à un escalier. Au rez-de-chaussée, dans l'intérieur d'une tour, est une petite chapelle, dont toutes les parois sont couvertes de fresques reprèsentant les différentes scènes de la Passion ... Tout l'édifice est fondé sur des caves profondes, qui s'étendent même sous un préau devant la porte d'entrée. Ces souterrains immenses servaient, je le suppose, de magasin à la garnison du château. Autant que j'ai pu en juger par le système général de la construction, par quelques ornements des voûtes, par l'appareil et le cournnement des murs, le château d'Anjony doit remonter au moins au XIVe siècle."
Une vendetta entre deux familles
Petit historique paru dans la Revue Massif Central :
"Guère plus qu'un donjon jeté comme un trait fin sur le ciel du Cantal, flanqué de quatre tours de gué, Anjony est un joyau, sans doute la plus remarquable des forteresses d'Auvergne, par la grandeur de son cadre, par la pureté de son architecture, par la richesse de son ornementation. Construit au XV° siècle, sur ordre royal par Loynot d'Anjony - un compagnon de Jeanne d'Arc, à dessein de protéger la vallée de la Doire, Anjony se pose dès cette époque en rival de Tournemire. Une sanglante vendetta va opposer les deux familles deux siècles durant, jusqu'à l'anéantissement des Tournemire dont le château sera finalement rayé de la carte. A l'inverse, le Donjon des Anjony prospère, s'enrichit d'une chapelle castrale aux fresques sublimes- La passion du christ en multiples tableaux magistraux- d'une salle des Preux aux murs peints de portraits en pied de Michel d'Anjony et de sa femme, germaine de Foix. Loyaux serviteurs du roi les Anjony - à l'origine une famille de pelletiers d'Aurillac se distinguent dans la carrière militaire. Ainsi l'increvable Claude qui sillonne les champs de bataille durant soixante deux ans, et qui adjoint au donjon une aile basse plus confortable. A l'âge de 89 ans, le valeureux guerrier, resté célibataire tente sans grand enthousiasme de prendre femme avant de léguer titre et château à son cousin Robert de Léoting en 1743. Depuis cette date les d'Anjony n'ont jamais déserté le donjon, cette fidélité étant le plus sûr garant de sa pérennité. Intact, solide, altier, le château semble défier le temps, comme une leçon d'histoire vivante."

In his Notes d'un voyage en Auvergne (Calmann-Levy, 1838), Prosper Mérimée, then traveling as part of his duties as Inspector General of Historic Monuments, described the Château d'Anjony as follows:
"On the Montagne de Tournemire, there were once, it is said, five castles owned by five different lords, and these castles are as close, if not closer, than those of Chauvigny. Only that of Anjony remains standing ... It is located on a steep height detached from the Cantal mountain range, on a kind of steep cape, separating two deep valleys. It is climbed by a very steep slope that winds for a long time among the rocks. At the top of the mountain is a triangular-shaped plateau, and it is at the tip of the triangle that the Château d'Anjony stands. Its very regular plan represents a small square flanked at each corner of a large round tower. Its curtains are very narrow and, like the towers crowned with machicolations... Two large rooms, one above the other, occupy the square between the curtains; in three towers there are rooms communicating with these large rooms, the fourth tower serves as a cage for a staircase. On the ground floor, inside a tower, is a small chapel, all the walls of which are covered with frescoes representing the different scenes of the Passion... The whole building is founded on deep cellars, which even extend under a covered courtyard in front of the entrance door. These immense underground passages served, I suppose, as a storeroom for the garrison of the castle. As far as I could judge by the general system of construction, by some ornaments of the vaults, by the apparatus and the crowning of the walls, the castle of Anjony must date back to at least the 14th century."
A vendetta between two families
A brief history published in the Revue Massif Central:
"Little more than a dungeon thrown like a fine line on the sky of Cantal, flanked by four watchtowers, Anjony is a jewel, undoubtedly the most remarkable of the fortresses of Auvergne, by the grandeur of its setting, by the purity of its architecture, by the richness of its ornamentation. Built in the 15th century, on royal orders by Loynot d'Anjony - a companion of Joan of Arc, with the intention of protecting the Dora Valley, Anjony posed itself from that time as a rival of Tournemire. A bloody vendetta would oppose the two families for two centuries, until the annihilation of the Tournemire whose castle would finally be wiped off the map. Conversely, the Anjony Donjon prospered, enriched itself with a castle chapel with sublime frescoes - The Passion of Christ in multiple masterful paintings - of a Salle des Preux with walls painted with full-length portraits of Michel d'Anjony and his wife, Germaine de Foix. Loyal servants of the king, the Anjonys - originally a family of furriers from Aurillac - distinguished themselves in their military careers. Thus the indefatigable Claude who crisscrossed the battlefields for sixty-two years, and who added a more comfortable low wing to the keep. At the age of 89, the valiant warrior, who remained single, tried without much enthusiasm to take a wife before bequeathing the title and castle to his cousin Robert de Léoting in 1743. Since that date, the d'Anjonys have never deserted the keep, this loyalty being the surest guarantee of its longevity. Intact, solid, haughty, the castle seems to defy time, like a living history lesson."

Quand je reviens de mes promenades à la Semois, je passe devant un étang où il y a plusieurs oiseaux aquatiques. Il y a notamment ce grèbe huppé qui semble être un célibataire, je n'en ai jamais vu de deuxième. Il est difficile à photographier car il est rapide, rarement au bord et plonge souvent sous l'eau. C'est d'ailleurs impressionnant, car il y reste longtemps. Dernièrement je l'ai vu remonter avec un poisson presque aussi gros que lui, je me suis demandée comment il allait faire pour le manger

Petite Loula ne le sait pas encore mais elle va avoir un compagnon à la fin du mois. Du moins il arrive à la fin du mois et ensuite il y a la quarantaine et cette horrible période de sociabilisation en terrain neutre, ce qui est encore plus difficile quand on ajoute un mâle à une femelle que l'inverse. Mais cette fois c'est la dernière. Le prochain qui restera veuf ou veuve devra finir sa vie en célibataire.
Little Loula does not know yet but she is going to have a companion at the end of the month. At least he comes at the end of the month and then there is quarantine and this horrible period of socializing in neutral ground, which is even more difficult when adding a male to a female than the opposite. Sixty-three wood coat hangers
Man Ray worked in a wide range of media, including photography, painting, and sculpture, often blurring the boundaries between these practices. Obstruction, an assemblage of sixty-three wood coat hangers, is an example of a type of artwork that Dada artist Marcel Duchamp called a readymade, a term that suggests Man Ray’s appropriation and manipulation of pre-existing, common objects. The sculpture playfully mimics a chandelier, but, as the hangers seemingly divide and multiply, Obstruction quickly evolves into a dense tangle of overlapping forms. Cast shadows serve as distorted, immaterial extensions of its physical presence. Man Ray first created Obstruction in 1920, but the present work belongs to an edition of fifteen reproductions he created in 1961 for an important exhibition of Kinetic art.

Still in New York, Duchamp was being pulled further into the American art scene. Kathering Dreier had decided to establish a museum to house and exhibit modern art and was hoping he would help her. When he visited her to discuss the idea he took along a friend, Man Ray, in those days still a struggling young painter. When they met at Stieglitz’s 291 gallery they had struck up an instant rapport: Man Ray had immediately seen the point of Duchamp’s readymades and even come up with some of his own. He suggested a name for the new museum, “Société anonyme;” he assumed it meant ‘anonymous society’. In fact, the French expression means ‘public limited company’ or ‘corporation’, but Dreier liked it as a name , too, so they used it anyway. At 19 East 47th Street they rented a suite and set about creating a substantial venue for the exhibition of contemporary art in New York. Duchamp decorated the rooms and made a banner for the outside of the building, pointing out that, when they judged the works within and if they wanted modern art to come into its own, Americans should be encouraged to refer to their ‘farfamed sense of humour’ rather than listening to the critics. He and Man Ray had already begun working collaboratively, after Man Ray visited Duchamp’s studio one day while he was out of town and found “La Mariée mise à nu par ses célibataires, méme (The Large Glass (The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even)), the work Duchamp had begun in Paris but which was still uncompleted, left beside an open window and covered with dust. Man Ray was fascinated by the coating of dust and the patterns it made on the glass; this time, Duchamp had managed to make art without even being in the room. When he came back the two of them set up a camera and went out for an hour, leaving the lens open the glass illuminated by a naked bulb overhead. As Man Ray put it, “While the bride lay on her face decked out in her bridal finery of dust and debris, I exposed her to my sixteen-candle camera!.”
