I heard about this church before, but when I came insie the Martorana church, I wasn't really expecting this. The rich details of the golden mosaics, most of them created in the twelve century, were really impressive.

The Unitarian Memorial Church

Fairhaven, Massachusetts

December 19th, 2014

I was lucky enough to me invited to spend the afternoon inside one of the town of Fairhaven's most iconic structures, the Unitarian Memorial Church. The first image seen here is not of the church but of the stage in the adjacent building's auditorium that is connected to the church. There is not a single inch inside these buildings that there isn't a feast for the eyes.

Many, many images to follow, stay tuned.

Some history of the church in general:

"The Unitarian Memorial Church in Fairhaven Massachusetts was built, financed and donated to the Unitarians in 1904 by Henry H. Rogers in memory of his mother, Mary Eldredge Huttleston. The architects Brigham, Coveney and Bisbee of Boston designed this church in the 15th century Gothic perpendicular style.

The Unitarian Memorial Church is one hundred fourteen feet in height, one hundred feet long in body and fifty-three feet wide. The nave is thirty-two feet wide and seventy-one feet long. The main aisle is sixty-two feet long and six feet wide.

The church, parish house and former parsonage (now Harrop Center) of the Unitarian Society are so placed as to form three sides of a quadrangle, set among well-kept lawns and shrubbery.

Granite (locally quarried) with Indiana limestone decorative carvings dominate the exterior while marble and limestone carvings dominate the interior. All stonework artistry was created by forty-five Italian craftsmen brought to Fairhaven by Rogers."

I don't believe this is true "running plaster", as this room was created in the 1920s to resemble an old English mansion. But I'll see what I can learn about it.

The ceiling in Chichester Cathederal.

This is the ceiling in the Thistle Chapel at St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland. It's a small side chapel off the main part of the cathedral. There is so much detail and history in this beautiful small chapel I easily spent a half hour within it.

The Order of the Thistle is Scotland’s great order of chivalry, and membership is considered to be one of the country’s highest honors. The Order is traditionally given to

Scots or people of Scots ancestry, who have given distinguished service. Appointments are entirely in the Thistle a personal gift of the Sovereign.

The Order of the Thistle has roots in the Middle Ages, but the present day order was largely created in 1687 by King James VII of Scotland (King James II of England). The nave of Holyrood Abbey was adapted as its chapel, but in 1688 the Abbey was ransacked by the Edinburgh mob, furious at King James’ Roman Catholic allegiance. After that, the Knights of the Thistle had no chapel of their own for over 200 years.

The Thistle Chapel was designed by Robert Lorimer and finished in 1911. It contains stalls for the 16 knights, the Sovereign’s stall and two Royal stalls. The chapel contains a wealth of detail, both religious and heraldic, and much of it peculiarly Scottish, including angels playing bagpipes.

Entered through a low-vaulted vestibule or ante-chapel at the east end of the Preston aisle, the chapel is a rectangle of three bays, with a polygonal eastern apse and a stone vault encrusted with a rich pattern of ribs and carved bosses. The effect is greatly enhanced by heraldic and figurative stained glass in the windows.Thistle Looking up

Along the sides of the chapel are the knights’ stalls, which are capped by lavishly carved canopies with the helms and crests of the knights rising above. The richest effect of all, however, is reserved for the Sovereign’s stall at the west end of the chapel.

It was a bit of challenge for me to capture this photo as I was using a small point-n-shoot hand held as I didn't bring my tripod for the bigger DSLR.

I manually stitched two photos together as my panorama software couldn't render all the detail. Regardless of the challenges, it was great capture this amazing ceiling.

I'm gone, folks. Away in another country. I hope to bring back shots.

I really hope to bring back some good ones.

I've talked to my Flickr people (I have people) and they have agreed

to put Flickr on hold while I'm gone so I don't miss anything. Whew.

If you see anything happening, they must have not been the right people.

Do you miss me yet? :)

Merritt Square Mall

777 E. Merritt Island Causeway, Merritt Island, FL

Merritt Square Mall originally opened in 1970, and as of 2018 is anchored by Sears, JCPenney, Macy’s, Dillard’s, Cobb Cinemas, and Books-A-Million. For more details on the history of this mall, please click here!

Here’s another overview of the Sears wing of Merritt Square Mall, with the Macy’s court visible in the distance. Beyond Spencer’s and Claire’s, just about every storefront was empty until you get to the Macy’s court. However, don’t let this give you a bad impression of Merritt Square – the rest of the mall is quite busy and doing very well!
