Once initial processing was completed, I finished up with various masks, local adjustments and filters in On1 Photo RAW 2020.5.

I woke up at 4:30 to catch the morning light at a different location. That spot turned out to be a bust for me, but I caught this magical scene on my way home!

Tech Specs: 3 shot HDR made with my Olympus OM-D e-m1.2 with the m.Zuiko 12-40mm f2.8 Pro lens and NiSi CirPL filter mounted on my meFoto Globetrotter Classic tripod. I leveraged the Olympus High Res shot mode to squeeze as much detail as possible and this also deliciously extended the exposure. Base exposure info 29mm | f8 | ISO 200 | 1/40th sec. Adding all the exposures up that created this image means the shutter was open about 3/4th of a second.

Post-Processing: I started out in DxO Photo Lab 4 and Nik HDR Efex Pro for the initial RAW processing, but I finished my workflow in On1 Photo RAW 2020.5.

Not every shot in my collection shows one of these pros soaring through the air in the midst of a spectacular trick. I think this one show just the punishment these riders can take. Keep in mind, the demo was happening pretty close to shore, so the waters were 2.5-4 feet deep.

I got very lucky with this image! I had planned out the morning to catch the eclipse, but I had my dates wrong and only realized my error the evening before as I was settling down for the night, so I didn't get to bed as early as I would have liked to rest up for my morning outing. And, I didn't have my spot fully picked out to catch this once in a lifetime celestial event. Because of this, I set the alarm a bit earlier than I might have otherwise done, which was a good thing (as you'll see as I work my way through this rambling narrative...). An hour and 20min drive to my viewpoint only to find it socked in by the clouds you can see past the ridgeline in this shot and I had a panicky race to my backup viewpoint (which would have been a 20min drive under normal circumstances - I won't say how long it took me to get there that morning...).

I have yet to develop the full skillset when it comes to landscape photography. I couldn't sort out the right settings for shooting into the sun, so I bracketed every composition in hopes that I could exposure blend something together into a solid image. I haven't shared my image from that morning before now because I tried processing my files 3 times before today, but I couldn't get a "final" image that felt both real and looked like how I remembered the morning. Until now.

This may not be perfection in photography, but it captures how I remembered the scene. I shot it a bit wider than images I've seen from other photographers , but I wanted to capture the ethereal mists of the morning as well as the crescent sun. Those same clouds almost blocked the view of the event entirely, but I managed to find a window of opportunity with is image.

Milky Way over Griffis (option 2)

This is the same subject as what I posted Monday, but a bit later in the evening to get the Milky Way in a more attractive position. I also sorted out a new workflow that yields a better result (in my opinion).

Tech Specs: Image made with my Olympus OM-D e-M1.2 with the m.Zuiko 8mm f1.8 Fisheye Pro lens and mounted on my Mefoto Globetrotter Classic tripod. Again, this is a stack of 19 exposures (15 light and 4 dark) for the sky and 1 exposure for the foreground. The base foreground exposure utilized Olympus' Live Composite mode to stack multiple exposures and only add light to the image with each new exposure. Total exposure was about a half hour while I played with a very diffused LED Lenser flashlight (ISO1600 | 10s | f1.8). The 19 sky exposures were ISO4000 | 8s | f1.8).

Post-Processing: My workflow involved more editing of each exposure in On1 prior to exporting the series to Starry Landscape Stacker. The stacked image was then brought back into On1 to blend the foreground and sky and finalize my edits.

2 Hours in Griffis

I've had a vision for this angle for about a year, but last weekend was my first opportunity to shoot the location alone without the worry that another photographer might introduce unwanted light to my exposure. This is a blend of 2 exposures. The foreground is 30s at ISO 3200, the sky was made by utilizing the "Live Composite" feature on my camera where my equipment will continuously stack exposures for as long as I want. In this case, I shot 10s exposures at ISO 1600 for 2 hours. During that exposure, I did a little light painting of the lady as well.

The Gear: Olympus OM-D e-M1.2 with the m.Zuiko 25mm f1.2 Pro lens and the Nisi Natural Night filter to help cut down the light pollution and bring out the colors in the stars.

In Post: Initial RAW processing handled by DxO PhotoLab4 and then pushed to On1 Photo RAW 2021.5 for filter work and exposure blending.

Week 4. Tell a Story using a mirror. I recently made a trip to the beach. As you can see there was nobody on the beach or the fishing pier that you can see in my mirrors. In just a few month the weather will be warmer and the beach will be full of people and the fishing pier will have fishermen fishing from it. Concrete Central 3

The third image from my venture out to this iconic location from Buffalo's commercial heyday. In this little project, I've played with color and mono versions of the various subjects, for this long hallway, I felt color suited the subject.

Technical: 3 shot HDR (handheld) using my Olympus Om-D e-M1.2 with my new m.Zuiko 25mm f1.2 Pro lens and Haida Nanopro 2-5 stop variable ND filter. Base exposure was 25mm | f1.2 | ISO3200 | 1/60th.

Development: The initial exposures were RAW processed using DxO PhotoLab 4 with exposure blending handled by Nik HDR Efex Pro. The combined image was then processed in On1 Photo RAW 2021 culminating with a roundtrip to Nik Silver Efex Pro and blending back in using On1 Layers.

Due to its being the largest grain elevator in the world and concerns about German sabotage, Concrete Central's method of construction was top secret. The facility was utilized for grain storage until 1966. Concrete Central stretches along the Buffalo River for almost a quarter of a mile and was the largest transfer elevator in the world at the time of its completion in 1917.[2] It is also the largest elevator ever built in the Buffalo area. When in operation, it had the capacity to handle a total of 4.5 million US bushels (160,000 m3) of grain. The elevator allowed crews to load and unload 20 railroad cars an hour, and three marine legs along the Buffalo River side could load and unload three massive lake freighters at one time."

At the last new moon, I made my way to one of the smallest of the Finger Lakes of western NY. The benefit of this location was that the lake is used for the city of Rochester's water supply, so access and property rights are restricted. Therefore, light pollution from lakefront properties is eliminated.

A couple weeks ago I attended a fundraiser for a local jetski club. Among the events of the day were pro team trick demonstrations. I have a number of winners from that day and I'll be sharing them as I get them processed.

The Tech: Olympus OM-D e-M1.2 with the m.Zuiko 40-150mm f2.8 Pro lens and 1.4 teleconverter (handheld). ISO200 | 1/3200 | f4 (wide open). Many of my shots from the day had a Nisi CirPl filter as well, but not on this one.

Processing: RAW processing handled by On1 Photo RAW 2020.2 then I roundtripped to Silver Efex Pro for the film emulation and mono conversion. Watermark/signature added in On1 Photo RAW layers.

A second image from my past trip to NY/NJ last month. This one is using Olympus' "Live Composite" mode. The base exposure is 60s, but in reality I left the shutter open for about 10 minutes to make this picture, which allowed for great movement in the clouds and nice streaks from the boats going by (and one very faint airplane high above).

Image made with my Olympus OM-D e-M1 mk2, my m.Zuiko 12-40mm f2.8 Pro lens, NiSi CirPL and Natural Night filters and meFoto Globetrotter tripod. Processed in On1 Photo RAW 19.5 with a roundtrip to Nik Silver Efex.

6 shot panoramic capture with my Olympus OM-D e-M5 mk1, the m.Zuiko 45mm f1.8 lens with B+W 10stop ND filter and my Manfrotto tripod. Each image was a 30sec exposure, f7.1 & ISO 100. Images were stitched and processed in On1 Photo RAW 19.1.
