I went out of Wednesday night to try and capture one last IC&E train. I got down to Davis Junction and nothing was happening--the LDS2 with 4207 was at Genoa heading east and the late-running M-CCNA was gone. I went over to Adeline Siding, hoping for a train,but no luck there either. So I went out to the old block signal just to the west. Since the new system was activated this signal is approach lit, which means it is dark unless a train is close--dark signal=no train.
So I set up and did some night shots of the silhoutte signal. The stars were really bright out there in the country, I always have enjoyed a dark sky. It didn't take long for my eyes to adjust to the dark conditions and the Milky Way was really glowing. A couple of seconds later and I was humming the tune "Under the Milky Way Tonight" by The Church. The lyrics really fit with the scene. They go in part:
"And its something quite peculiar
something that's shimmering and white.
Leads you here, despite your destination
under the Milky Way tonight."

I really should be revising, although have done nearly 3 hours tonight! Just couldn't resist this shot...

One of the few monarchs I've seen this season... we haven't had many butterflies of any species this year. It was very strange to walk by the butterfly milkweed day after day and not have it teeming with butterflies...

...manually converting a binary number to dotted decimal notation is a total pain in the arse, and I know from personal experience that NO ONE EVER USES IT IN THE FIELD, but I have to know it cold to pass the damn tests. AAARRRGGHHH!!!
(It's not hard to do as much as super tedious.)

It's hard to get shots of fish for my prairie wildlife species collection. On this particular stormy day the water flooded over the trail and these little fish were swimming upstream through the fast flowing water like salmon going upstream to spawn. As I was watching, this one careened out of control and swam right out of the water and ended up on the trail. Since he volunteered to nicely to pose for me, I flipped him back in the water when I was done.... Green Sunfish is my best guess as to the species. Any ID confirmation or correction would be appreciated.
