I use all of these and the only problem I have had is running spotify and listening to music while surfing flickr. The two together use to much bandwidth.

This is my first homemade Christmas card
This is a special desktop, hence the "(Special Edition) tag after the name. This is more than a desktop to show you the rainmeter skin, and its almost perfect harmoney with the background which is actually hidden by the skin oddly but the focal point of ones computer (mine) and the "apps" that are integrated into said setup.
Apps
The apps (I like to call applications, apps, ever since the App Store came out, it just sounds 1337) is the central focus of this desktop. A computer is nothing without apps to customize the way it works, (just like the iPhone ^_^). This is my computer so you get to see the apps I use, since 1'z @r3 c00l3r :P

Yes, I recently got into Photo editing because it intrigued me. I talked to my Web Design teacher at school, and he handed over the official Adobe Systems Photoshop CS4 handbook. Anyways, I downloaded it with NO intention in my mind to use it, I just wanted it on my computer, but now I am really looking into the photo editing spectrum as something new that I can learn on the computer.

Revo Uninstaller
This should be the replacement for the stock Windows Add/Remove programs, program. This is the best, since it can force uninstall software, and search for left over files and registry index's after the install. This is a must have.

Dropbox
Dropbox is awesome. I currently don't have a USB flash Drive, or an external hard drive, so Dropbox is the best solution for me. Besides the fact that it stores 2GB of information (3 GB for me, invited people suckers) its also good as an online backup just incase everything goes wrong. Sure its only 2GB (upgradeable to 5GB for free if you invite people and 100GB for a monthly cost) but its worth it.
SuperAntiSpyware
I torrent, a lot. Around 10-15GB every month, and you can't be too carefull even when your browsing The Pirate Bay looking for the most seeders. Thats why I have SuperAntiSpyware. I use it because of 1 feature: you can quit it. Unlike AVG you can quit SuperAntiSpyware whenever you like, and being a person with a somewhat slow computer, its something that can mean the difference from raging at startup or browsing the web 2 seconds after login.
Rainmeter
Desktop Widgets are awesome. And they are even more awesome, as long as its not the stock widgets in Vista or 7. Rainmeter takes it away, and I'm hooked. I can never run away, and people have seen me try that in the past (it never worked). After spending a little over a year with it, learning the coding, its hard to tear away from the roots.

When your torrenting, you gotta have a solution for all those anti-p2p organizations, and PeerGaurdian2 SUCKS at that, because its blacklist URL has been down for over a year, so its can't update. But it still updates the Government IP's and thats enough for me to run PeerGaurdian2 while torrenting.

Remote Controling amazed me. I had to have it, so I did. Now I can control my computer from any computer like I am sitting right in front of it. Its soo helpful, when I wanted to start something on my computer like a defrag, but wasn't around it. Its perfect when you find out that you forgot to start that spyware scan, and just remote control your computer and start it. Its a life Saver, a Must have.

I thought I would be back last night but when I tried to upload a photo it wouldn't work. I found this one in my stream... I uploaded it some time ago but never got around to sharing it.
I have enjoyed a long weekend at the beach which was lovely but it was not the main reason for my absence from Flickr.
Our problems started when my brother clicked on a dodgy link in Facebook resulting in our computer becoming infected by multiple viruses and spyware. As soon as I realised what had happened I disconnected the internet connection, but it has taken me over a week and I don't know how many hours of investigations to clean everything and feel cautiously confident about reconnecting to the internet.
Fortunately we have another computer in the house and so I was able to download software and updates to assist with cleaning the computer.
On a positive note, I certainly learned a lot about our computer, and about online security over the past week! Google was a lifesaver! I could not have done it without Google.
Following are mostly things you should do to PREVENT your computer being infected. I'm certainly not an expert so please don't take my word for ANYTHING... please do your own research. However, these are a few things that I found helpful and am sharing them with the hope that it may save somebody else some headaches! :-)

If you believe I am wrong, please correct me!
* For secure passwords, don't use the same password for everything. Make sure you password is not in the dictionary, is not something associated with yourself, includes at least one capital letter, one number and one symbol.
* Make sure your anti-virus software is turned on, working properly and is being regularly updated - most software will automatically download updates from the internet. (If you don't have virus software, have a look at AVG's free anti-virus software. That's what I'm using now)
* Make sure you have a recent version of your preferred internet browser. Apparently older versions may not receive security updates. Again, updates can be downloaded free.
* Allow Windows to download and install updates. Someone once told me you should not install updates as they can create problems with your computer settings but now I believe this was wrong advice as some of the updates are important security patches.
* Consider using Opera or Mozilla Firefox as an alternative to Internet Explorer - these can be downloaded free and apparently are more secure than Internet Explorer. Again, I am not expert, only repeating what I've read.
* Update Java.. apparently old versions have vulnerabilities. I found these instructions very thorough and helpful

* Download and run a free spyware/malware scanner but be careful - some so-called anti-spyware software actually download spyware onto your computer. I used Malwarebytes Anti-Malware tool and thought it was very effective.
I understand that you should only use one anti-virus package and one firewall, but can run multiple spyware checks if desired.
* I also downloaded free software called CCleaner which you can use to delete all your old temp files, temporary internet files, Windows log files etc. It frees up space and makes scans run quicker.
* Another very useful free program is Trend Micro's HiJackThis. I used it to remove the last traces (I hope!) of the infections and restore internet settings. PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL IF YOU USE THIS AND DON'T DELETE/FIX ANYTHING UNLESS YOU ARE 100% SURE WHAT YOU ARE REMOVING. Some suspicious sounding entries were actually valid and your computer may be damaged if they are deleted. I did hours of research before attempting to delete anything.

I tried using vista glazz, but I still couldn't get the themes to work (ETA: I think it's because the ones I really wanted involved aero, and I have basic). I also considered using an alt shell, but I actually use all the features of explorer.exe, so I didn't see the point of tweaking/modding when everything I like is in one thin strip. I used high contrast (appearances and colors) instead. It had some ugly colors, so I changed a few of them, to make it a little less glaring, and got rid of the green and purple from the titlebar. Not only does everything appear black, but it adds a black background to everything (swrite, calc, explorer). This is much easier on the eyes. The only thing that it doesn't make black are webpages, for obvious reasons. I prefer to use opera over firefox, so I don't use the stylish extension to fix that, but I'm OK with that. Some websites let me take over, some don't. If I hit F11, I won't really notice the difference.
System Tray:
Dexpot: For virtual desktops. It's more responsive than yod'm. I like that it can also minimize pretty much everything to the system tray as well (*cough* defrag*cough*). I also use it to switch between windows with the default win + space, so a bit more powerful that alt+tab. I keep one for internet (which has its uses, but I get distracted easily) and one for typing.
Sysstats to monitor memory and cpu. I had issues with samurize, it would conk out on me for some reason. I have rainmeter pictured, but I got rid of it, and I'm too lazy to take another screenshot. I just don't feel like win+D to check if it's too much for my poor laptop has to add another task to complete.
Task Manager starts minimized. It's a visual cue in case I'm too tired to see numbers, and it allows me easy access if somethings goes bonkers.
CoreTemp to monitor the CPU temp. However, I don't use it so much now, since my system doesn't like that it wants to run at startup, and it has to bypass UAC. Besides, when it hits 50C, I can feel it. I also used HWMonitor (free) for a while to see how the HDD temp is, but it's typically less than the CPU temp, so I ignore it now.
AHK for shortcuts and to toggle the taskbar on/off, in case some program doesn't realize that I moved the taskbar to the top of the screen and blocks me from moving the window. I also have it toggle hidden/visible files (via one of the LH commenters).
Avast is set to run when idle (whoo hoo screen saver mode).
PStart to access some portable programs that aren't installed, however, my main launcher is launchy/windows search.
Rainlender is automatically synced with windows calendar (I have them reading from the same ical calendar), which I use to sync with gmail via GCalDaemon.
I use the quick launch to access my most used programs/files via mouse, when I'm too lazy to use both of my hands to access something/eating.
Other items of note:
Use of Desktop Media and large icons on the screen.
Use of Text Files:
I found via google search/launchy forums a way to create/append via launchy text files, so I hit addin TAB "words here" "multiple words".txt to either create new text files or append to the text. So, I can add to a plain text todo list if something occurs to me (and add it a bit later to rainlender/windows cal), or when I make a change to my computer simply hit alt + space, addin TAB "change here" ML.txt (maintenance log) and the change is added to my plain text file.
Not Seen: My wallpaper :-) It's such a girly one too. I took one of the girly pictures I found, went into paint, ctrl + I, adjust the hue a bit, and I'm happy. It's my first stint with actually majorly changing a picture (other than red-eye removal and darkening/lightening a picture), so I'm really proud of the major/simple changes I made to the picture.
Other than the desktop media, rainlender, and current temp/download files soon to be deleted/moved, my desktop is clean (hence the reason I <3 quicklaunch).
It still isn't perfect, but it does most of what I like. My wish list is to get rid of the box around the start button and some type of stylish option for opera, as well as tweaking the programs that black on white instead of vice versa (CCleaner). Overall I like my setup, especially since it's pretty global, easy on the eyes, and involves very minimal tweaking.

College is my full time job so I set up my laptop to get the most out of school.
Since I didn't want to spend any money on virus protection, I picked up Comodo Firewall and Avast anti-virus.
I use Executor Instead of desktop shortcuts. It keeps everything tidy. I almost use keywords exclusively.
I use the Vista Sidebar to keep the time and date. I am keen on the weather as well. All the apps or folders I use the most I keep on the app launcher. I also use the Sidebar to keep up on my teams.
Stickies are great for little notes, but lately I've been using them to keep my schedule on my desktop. Along with my classes, I keep any important information like office locations and faculty websites. I can keep track of my work load by locking stickies under each class.
My laptop is on the underpowered side, so I use Stratup Optimizer to make startup easier on my machine as well as clean up junk or old programs.
CCleaner and Glary Utilities cleans up my computer and frees space.
I use System Explorer instead of Windows Task Manager. System Explorer can do everything Task Manager can as well as deeper performance information, action history, and more.
I don’t use foobar200, or CD Art Display, or any of that junk. I can get by with iTunes. It fulfills all my music needs.
You can’t see it, but I am using the NEXTLevel theme for Windows Vista. I have enough distractions on my desktop so I just keep my wallpaper solid black. It helps keep my productive.
Once I put everything together, I have a cheap laptop with free programs that accomplish everything a student needs.
