Matchbox Collectors premium series are very expensive in the UK where available, and that isn't very widely, and indeed in most European countries. Often priced as much as five to ten times the price of a basic Mainline and at least three times the price of a Majorette Premium its easy to see why I just don't bother much with them anymore.
What Matchbox consider consider to be premium is wildly different to what most collectors expect at this lofty price point and this Collectors Porsche Cayenne Turbo puts things into sharp perspective. I'm a big fan of the basic Mainline version but this hardly differs from that. It has no opening parts, no working suspension, no metal baseplate, just tampo all round and wheels with removable tyres.
However......in America and in Japan and Hong Kong they are literally half the price and at that price point they do make much more sense!
Found at a huge Mega Don Quijote discount store in Japan.
Mint and boxed.
Pengying, probably not a toy company you've heard of before but is one of many Chinese manufacturers making rather realistic but unlicensed diecasts similar in size to Siku. They also follow the same trend by giving them opening features and realistic wheels. For a budget effort this Porsche Cayenne really isn't bad at all. Part of a four vehicle set sourced recently from China. Mint and boxed.
Effective and capable as it may be, it's still not very pleasing to the eye. I left the pretty little Alfa in so your eyes wouldn't be too repulsed.

Every June I enjoy four days at The Goodwood Festival of Speed, drifting a Cayenne S around a field. This picture is on day one and shows the Sand Yellow coloured car slightly splattered with mud after a run on the freshly watered field.
These cars are completely standard machines and in fact the ones that we have enjoyed over the last three years are pre-production models that the Experience Centre at Silverstone “borrowed” from The Germans!!! for an undetermined amount of time. I often wonder if at Leipzig there is someone in procurement who occasionally scratches his or her head trying to remember where these pre production cars are.
In the middle of this field is an oak tree and it is fun to flick the car around the tree and I always try to keep the car sideways for as much of each lap as I can. The weather can make our displays very interesting and I can remember years where we have had difficulty seeing out of the windows. Doesn’t slow us down though, just makes it more exciting as you search for clues - the perimeter wooden fence, The Old Oak tree in the middle and the straw bales that are there to protect the tractor that puts water onto the ground when it is too dry and dusty.
Almost before the dust has settled, I am looking forward to the next year.
