People like to complain about street construction — "Oh it's awful & I'll be glad when it's finished," they say to one another and to TV reporters, hundreds of times a day — but if it weren't for construction equipment the only things to look at on Marquette Avenue'd be the bottoms of conspicuously bland office towers and the entrances and exits of parking ramps.
The bldg @ the right is one of César Pelli's abominable creations and Jesus that wall's a depressing thing to have to walk past. I'd rather get hydraulic excavators and orange plastic mesh and Jersey barriers and cylindrical castle-topper turret-looking things, which are temporarily-above-ground manholes.

Years ago and I mean many years ago
it was just Mr Boney and myself that
would come to the mud cobra field.
As time passed another dog was added.
And look at us now with three crazy dogs.
In fact Mama and The Zoomer have been
here as well. So you ask what's the story ?
As we first entered the m/c field I could see
the tractor has been here with a field mower.
When the dogs were released from their
leashes in the sidecar they took off like
wildfire straight down the path towards
the shelter. Now this was strange cuz
they always take the time to pee on
all the twigs and things before they
head on down towards the oasis.
In due time the boom was spotted
as I approached the shelter area.
The dogs were very leery of the
giant yellow monster and kept
their distance at all times ;-0
Off to our left is the shelter and if you
remember behind it was lots of heavy
scrub brush/trees. Lots and lots of it !
So here comes the Big Surprise ---
All of that scrub brush/trees has been
cleared by the excavator and what's
it been hiding all of these years ?
A field about 1/4 mile x 1/4 mile filed
with nearly mature palm oil trees !
All this time they were hidden by
the heavy scrub brush/trees !
Of course I had to wander on out
there & soon found myself dodging
Mr Murphy Traps in every direction ;-0
Ground was way soft with deep holes !
Eventually I got the scooter/sidecar back
to stable ground and dismounted right here.
Now it could have been way worse.
How's that you ask ? If it were to be
wet/muddy it would be impossible !
After 73 min in the m/c field we headed
home with a short stop for a liter of fuel
at the corner lady's open air restaurant.
Once home Pumpkin Pie was given a bath.
Everybody was fed breakfast then to bed.
Thank You.

On the final day of my cross-country trip, I chose Highway 299 to get from Redding down to the Pacific Coast. It looked like a smaller road that would be a beautiful drive through the coastal mountains.
This being in the summer, there were several large road construction sites that held up traffic. You have to admire the engineering and work that goes into building roads in such difficult terrain.
While the rest of the herd is still hard at work making roadway improvements, this wheel loader is getting a little TLC.

* Woodhouse Junction Box demolition, in 5 parts, amalgamated together into one continuous view...

Friday 19th March
-------------------
2. Woodhouse Junction. This shows a selection of 5 clips, merged together, of what, by the time I arrived, was only the bottom half of the box, though the lever frame was still in place, just about, the top part had been consigned to history and the skip. As can be seen, the lever frame was in place though damaged but within a few minutes, that was duly ripped out, 'before my very eyes', pulled apart and piled on top of the other scrap metal next to the large yellow, 'wood skip'. This didn't take long using the 'CAT' machine and some odd bits of acetylene cutting to separate the more difficult parts. The local housing development across the tracks must have had a grandstand view of the proceedings from their upper floor windows and there was another house within a few metres of the box position, with 2 women looking out of the upstairs window at what was unfolding.. The pictures from outside the compound weren't easy to take due to various obstructions, but I think the gist of the matter is plain to see. It doesn't look as if anything was spared, the services, water and electricity having been cut off, the place was just ripped apart and dumped in the skip and onto a pile of scrap metal. The old, red-brick building next to the box survived and is visible in these pictures as is the new colour light exit signal, WN8124, for exit from the Reception siding and its run-around. The two lines remaining of the 3, are the one next to the main lines and the one next to the shrubbery, the centre road has gone. The closest one to the camera is now termed the 'Recep', Reception Siding, on the track diagram, and the one further over next to the main lines, now termed 'RR', Run-Round loop. There was a station here as well as Woodhouse and Beighton and maybe the red-brick building seen in the stills video yesterday and at the beginning of this one, on the far right, was part of the old station. The station was opened by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway but it didn't last very long, opening in 1850 and was closed in 1865; possibly lack of passenger traffic in this out-of-the-way area. Some information about the station and related information can be found here-

Row of excavators at the Gorst Creek restoration project in Port Orchard, WA. Photographed with a Kodak Instamatic X-15F camera using Kodacolor Gold 200 film that expired 10/1992. I had the lab push the film one stop.
This was in the September issue of Classic Plant they have a picture of both of Terry’s (the chief’s) internationals at Newby Hall, Ripon.
In brief the BTD6 Drott is a 1961 all original which Terry is the 2nd owner and the BTD8 doesn’t have a history but only has 2500 hours on the clock.
Terry started working for himself earthmoving etc. in 1967 with a BTD6 Drott just like the one in the picture which, in those days there were was nearly one on every building site in the UK. His first experience of taking the clutch out on a BTD6 without any handbooks and no knowledge and a cab took him 3 days in and out! Finally after some practice he got this operation down to 2 hours.
The BTD8 which is a series 2 about 1974, is a well-balanced tractor with the tracks in front of the radiator which is good for reversing up steep hills.
If you managed to get over to see us at the Vintage Working day and ploughing match this weekend they were both there and you may have spotted them.
