Simon is known for creating his own sets of wheels.

B..J. stands for Bob, Jr. Although he was not related to the original Bob Cat--who my sister cared for in Cincinnati for a while before he found a permanent home with one of her friends--B.J. earned his name because he was not only similar to Bob in looks but in temperament too. These two cool kitties bring in the sunshine. Maybe that's explains their cheery coats. (B.J.'s on the right...I mean, the left. No, the right....Um....)

This pencil portrait of "Buffett" , a very sweet guy , who passed away shortly after I did his portrait. He evolved into "Buffetts Surprise" and continues to inspire me. This is a copy off of the print and isn't as soft as the original.

When Lily lounges on her closet cat climber, her back legs hang over the edge in whatever direction they fancy. Sometimes, it makes me wonder if they're really connected to the rest of her body. (They are.)

Before we met Simon, he was a star performer for the original cast of Cirque du Soleil. Some days, if you listen closely, you can hear remnants of his French accent. Here, he is doing one of his most popular tricks on the tightrope.

When Simon first came into our lives, he suffered from a slight limp, which has since healed. He claims that the injury is a result of a freak accident during rehearsal in Oslo. Apparently, he saw an old friend in the crowd and just forgot where he was for a second. Don't worry, he landed on his feet.

These days, you can sometimes find him doing his old tricks in the backyard. See here: www.flickr.com/photos/melissaskitties/4317360045/

Here's a new portrait of Walter. He's grown into.a sleek, lanky cat, but he's still a kitten on the inside.

Of all of The Kitties, The Mother Kitty and Simon could use sweaters since they spend their time outdoors or in the garage. The Mother Kitty rolled her eyes at the thought of wearing one because, she says, "Cats who wear outerwear are idiots."

I think that gave her ideas. One Christmas, Simon was proudly wearing a personalized gift from his roommate. I took away her knitting needles for a while after that.

Hi everyone,

Last month, the managers of my apartment building surprised us with goody bags. You'll see below what Chef Simon did with the contents. As usual, Norman helped in his own way.

I aimed to get this posted in time for Valentines Day, but I just couldn't stop eating the marshmallows and forgot all of my other priorities. Norman and I have some things in common.

Yum!

Melissa

Apparently on vacation in California a few days too long, I began dreaming about my kitty at home. But here we are now, back to our routine of morning hugs.

This week, The Kitties headed to The Gulf of Mexico to help with the oil spill cleanup effort. Here, Simon goes swimming with the dolphins.

Illustration Friday's topic, "Ripple," is corresponding with The Ripple Blog, which benefits charities fighting to save the animals affected by the Deepwater Horizon Catastrophe. Conceived by Kelly LIght, The Ripple Blog began on the spill's 45th day. All artwork on The Ripple Blog are done on 2.5" x 3.5" sketchcards. Each one is sold for a $10 donation to either The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies (http://www.imms.org/) or The International Bird Rescue Research Center (http://www.ibrrc.org/).

As demonstrated so joyfully by Winnie the Pooh's Tigger, one thing that all orange kitties have in common is their love of bouncing. Some days, you'll find B.J. in the yard doing just that. It's too bad this isn't an Olympic event because he would win the gold!

As all mothers should, The Kitty taught her children well.

This week's Illustration Friday topic brought to mind several remedies--medicine for allergies, yoga for stress, naps when overtired. But, no matter what my nagging complaint, my most trusted remedy is Lily Cat.

This week, The Kitties headed to The Gulf of Mexico to help with the oil spill cleanup effort. Here, B.J., helping the little ones, polishes some clams as some newly bathed shrimp look on.

With Norman, the devil often wins out.

One of Gordon's favorite pastimes is chasing the birds in the yard. He doesn't always catch them.

The Mother Kitty prides herself on her shiny coat. But, sometimes, cleanliness is momentarily out of her control.

Don Juan DeMarco is one of Simon's many heroes.

I tried to think of some other idea associated with this word, but once the song was in my head, there was no turning back. Here's my illustration, finally done a month later (and Julie Andrews isn't even in this)! Now, the song can be in your head too. You can see the original video here: vimeo.com/31680681.

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about how Lily sparked deja vu with her many Mother-Kitty-like habits. Here's another one:

You may remember how The Mother Kitty used to groom herself incessantly until a clouds of white furballs surrounded her (See here: melissaconnolly.blogspot.com/2009/06/illustration-friday-.... I used to think Lily didn't shed much at all, but I've noticed quite a few gray furballs rolling out from their hiding places and wafting through the apartment lately. When I ask Lily about it, she--as usual--tilts her head thoughtfully and then suggests, "Dust?"

The Kitties and I are thrilled about the start of the new season of "So You Think You Can Dance." To celebrate, The Kitties pay tribute here to one of our favorite dances from last week's opening show. Choreographed by past contestant Travis Wall, the joy of this dance swept us all away.

You can see the dance, performed by the final five dancers to be selected for the show, here: youtu.be/MDYRF7ien1g

I'm finally getting back to drawing, with some new kitties and friends in store. This is Walter! Learn more about him on my blog:

This Illustration Friday topic is from two Fridays ago. Thanks to our Willy Wonka upbringing, The Kitties and I have been singing "Pure Imagination" every day since first seeing the word. Comet was all over filling in for Gene Wilder here--a perfect match that no one could argue.

To see the video of the original, check out my blog post here: melissaconnolly.blogspot.com/2012/09/imagination.html

As shown in this photo op, it's a bit difficult to catch Tyrone sitting still.

My cat, Big Spike, and the Lion within

After visiting my favorite theater last week, I came home and told The Kitties all about its marquee. Here, they re-enact my joyous/frantic anticipation of the coming attraction. I think they all get it just about right....

Although The Mother Kitty doesn't quite understand all the hubbub, she does come prepared to watch this adventure's final installment. (After all, she's been waiting to see how Captain Jack Sparrow will escape his latest predicament, and she can't wait to meet his dad!) At the moment, however, she is smiling at the thought of me bringing home the DVD, which guarantees her at least three hours of lap time.

See you at the movies!!!

For the last couple of weeks, The Kitties--of course--have been all about Alice in Wonderland. Today, they made it down the rabbit hole. It's no surprise that Norman immediately spotted the "Eat Me" cake or that Ashes gulped down the "Drink Me" potion. (The Mother Kitty is annoyed with their situations.) Lily is wondering where they've landed and how they'll get back to ground level, but B.J. is still marveling at their new surroundings. Comet is nervous, Simon is dizzy, and Gordon is eager to get a move on. After all, they all have a tea date with The Mad Hatter, and no one wants to be late for that guy!

Lily is the first cat I've had on my own. Soon after she came to live with me in 2009, I started noticing habits that reminded me of the other older kitties. She plays Hide and Seek like Comet. She talks a lot like B.J. and complains like Ashes. Like Norman, she gets a case of the crazies--but only once in a while. And, she tends to curl up into a ball for her naps like Simon.

Of course, Lily has her own fantastic traits and personality, but she reminds me most of The Mother Kitty. Like her, Lily is independent and can act aloof sometimes. I notice her taking over the apartment in her own little way, but she can also be extremely affectionate, so I let her be.

Most often, I see Lily staring like The Mother Kitty. The champion starer, the Mother Kitty could spend hours looking at you and "tell you" exactly what she wants. I don't always figure out what Lily wants, but she is always staring.

You can see the similarities above. Lily must have learned from the best. The Mother Kitty is happy to take some credit but admits that Lily has developed some of her own unique strategies. Who knows what's behind those giant pupils?
