Shameless self- (group-) promotion! Twenty five recently-encountered shots of superb imagination and flair - including a fair number from (or hopefully soon-to-be from) the UK Railway Mainline Station Roofs Group. Cathedrals of light!

Fishing is super! The smallest of the four caught so far.

A lifebuoy on a fishing boat, framed by rust, ropes and a brilliant blue sky - a reminder of both the beauty and toughness of life at sea.

Rusty was giving this poor mouse a bad time until I intervened. The mouse seemed sick...must have gotten into something that made it ill. Even Rusty lost interest sensing the mouse wasn't quite right.

D caught this frog on the way into summer camp. We had a good look (and photo) before we released it back into the garden. I love how both D and C have started to observe their environment more carefully -- spotting critters, interesting plants, watching behaviors.

This change in behavior -- becoming more observant -- is what motivated the EcoPhoto Project (people.uncw.edu/borretts/courses/bio366/ecophoto.pdf) I know assign as part of my Ecology courses. My hope is that we can use the camera lens, often embedded in the student's phones that of often distract their attention, to re-direct and focus their attention on the world around them.

Brook trout live here but they are hard to catch.....very smart!!

That's why fly fishing is so much fun!

Catch and release.

The setting sun and silhouette of a fisherman is an often cliched photo, but how many times does that photo have a backstory? I introduce to you, David: Who has lived in Madison for the last 25 years and loves to fish all year round. I asked him as we sat and made casual conversation if he would allow me to photograph him, to which he easily agreed. I learned about the different people on bikes he's come across while fishing in all seasons, he even expressed something about a fat bike group that rides on the Monona Bay. Maybe I'll have to look them up for a ride this winter?! I didn't want to get caught too late after dark so I thanked him for his time and parted ways, no longer strangers.

I am getting back into photographing strangers for my (608)strangers and I highly suggest checking out the 100 strangers group here on Flickr for inspiration on the daily!

After trolling successfully for Lake Trout on the big water, our friend Mike Bryant guided the boat to a protected, weed-lined, shallow bay. "You are likely to hook a pike on every cast" he indicated, and for the next 45 minutes, the duration of our stay, that proved to be true.

Mindful of the ethical issues associated with the activity, I really enjoy fishing. There is a sound your reel makes when a big fish has hit your lure and starts to tear off line -

ZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

- that starts my heart pounding. Hard to describe the feeling unless you are a fisher.

Which would make one think my face in the photo would have a slightly more animated expression. I believe I was concentrating on not dropping the fish. It looks pretty big, but it's not that amazing. One of the key skills associated with the sport is the ability to thrust the catch out away from your body and towards the camera, creating the illusion of greater size.

September trouts

It's my favorite month for fishing, the weather is perfect, the air returns fresh and you can safely go up the creek even for all the day.

If you then catch and release these beautiful creatures with red and black dots, the day will be really perfect !

These wild, amazing fish are too scarce and too precious to kill and eat. Sadly, there are a lot of people on this island who don't think that way. In my estimation they don't deserve to be called fly fishermen. The fishery for these beautiful fighting fish should be totally catch and release. Last year the provincial government seemed to be moving in the right direction as far as having a catch and release fishery... but this year they have moved a step backwards ... most likely because it was an election year.

Not a very big Permit, but I'll take it. These amazing fish are difficult to catch on a fly. They have a way of making you forget everything you thought you knew about casting. (Ascension Bay, Mexico).

If you like fishing, you gotta' love this one. I enjoyed seeing this scene while I was shooting it almost as much as I like fishing ... almost. :-)

This is the Lower Humber river in the vicinity of Strawberry Hill. Mansion Pool is just up the river from here. The fly fishing season for Atlantic Salmon closed on nearly all of the rivers of the island on September 7th. Down here on the Lower Humber, though, it's open for fall angling ... for catch and release only.

I took this on Saturday. But, even here the season closes tomorrow, October 7th. So, this guy was getting in a little last minute fishing of the season.

I have quite a few other shots of this ... some much closer taken with the Sigma 500mm, but this one puts it in perspective a little better.

. . . Spring is here, the Starlings have arrived, WAIT! Inside the cabin? That is correct, this silly bird came down the chimney and out the door of the wood stove while cleaning the glass, just before starting a fire! So what does one use to catch a bird flying 24 feet above the floor? Answer: You wait until he tires out and throw a towel in his direction! It worked, no starlings were harmed in making this shot!

Have a great start to spring Facebook and Flickr friends!

Here he's releasing this small ... but feisty ... grilse (small salmon) for me ... tailed by hand ... hence the glove.
