....and I'll face it again in about 6 weeks for the left eye.

oh, to be able to see clearly again.

Friends, I'm happy to report that, after cataract surgery on February 24th, my vision in my right eye is crystal clear. (Surgery on the left eye will be done on March 23rd.) This is the best thing that's happened bodily in quite some time. Photography will be so much easier and more fun now that I can see better. I am grateful. Thank you for all your prayers and good wishes.I took this photo (of a plaster mask of my face) in 2013 and just re-edited it in honor of my new lucid seeing. Thank you, God, thank you thank you thank you. Amen.

Sorry if I miss commenting or visiting any of your lovely photos for the next day or two but. I am just home from my left eye cataract surgery and my eye is a bit scratchy right now. Figured I would take a photo of my x marks the eye and dilated pupil with the nice orange tinge eyelid for my 365 so I would not miss a day.

I appreciate each and every visit, comment and fave here on my little corner of the world as seen through my lens.

I was first in line for cataract surgery this morning. Once finished I rolled out passed the rest of the people who were waiting for their turn. I was happy to tell them "it was a piece of cake!".

I was never a boy scout but follow the scouts' motto: Be Prepared! Hence the big cat bag of tissues, snacks, wallet, sunglasses, diabetic supplies, surgery information, CAMERA, etc.

I think that cat bag almost makes me look small.

This was yesterday, a couple of hours after having had cataract surgery. I could see nothing but white light at that time. Today is a little better, but still really blurry. Going to see the doctor in a little while to make sure everything looks okay.

Thank you for your prayers, Everyone! It's going to be a slow go, but I believe it will be perfect once the swelling goes down!

The day of surgery was awful. I woke after about 3 hours of sleep with a raging migraine! I threw up 3 X's before even leaving the house, and I'm amazed I could! Once I got there, the anesthesiologist gave me an IV migraine med that immediately got rid of the nausea and pain! It was almost miraculous! The surgery went smoothly after that, and the surgeon said everything was perfect. I'm so grateful!

Today I can see a little bit, but still blurry, so a friend is bringing me to the appointment. Hopefully it will be great news and by tomorrow the sight will return! Below is how the eye looks today.

Don't you just love the "yes" stamp that marks the correct eye?! Lol! They are cautious, anyway. Must have been asked 5 times what my name and DOB was. I'm glad for the checking! It would have been a mess had they made a mistake!

Damage to the high-altitude ozone layer means that much more cancer-causing UV radiation pours down on exposed skin, most of all in the months when the sun tracks closest to its peak near the 45-degree latitude mark in summer. Even with sun blocking cremes of various power, UV cumulatively most damages skin of the youngest and oldest, whose dermal layers are thinnest. Not too many years in the future, along with other posted warnings to the public (don't eat too much fish per week due to harmful plastic microbeads and heavy metals, etc), perhaps there will be one about skin cancers and cataracts of eyes. But until then, those who find joy or comfort in mass company of others will still provide a living to the seasonal businesses that supply gear and transportation to vacationers on the weekend and during the school's summer holidays.

Prepped for Second Cataract Surgery

Mom finally had her second cataract surgery. Her first one was postponed due to mechanical issues with the equipment. Then last week, her surgeon got sick and had to postpone again. So she went three weeks in between surgeries when it’s supposed to be only two. She was sick of not seeing! During the pre-op preparation, they dilate the eye that is getting operated on… can you tell which one it is? LOL! She said the second surgery went much smoother than the first and now she doesn’t have to wear glasses anymore!

Now offering LASER CATARACT SURGERY

Laser Cataract Surgery Wins Fans in Volusia, Flagler

As seen in The Daytona Beach News Journal Online

By Skyler Swisher, Business Writer.

DAYTONA BEACH -- Diana Miller awoke, looked around and was amazed.

Colors appeared brighter. Images looked sharper. She didn't need to reach for her glasses.

"I could see around the room," said Miller, a DeLand resident. "I could see the clock. I could see things I could not have seen in years."

Miller is one of the first people in Volusia County to undergo laser-assisted cataract surgery.

The use of a laser marks an advancement in one of the most commonly performed surgeries, said William W. Culbertson, professor of ophthalmology at the University of Miami's Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.

Cataracts affect nearly 22 million Americans age 40 and older, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

By age 80, more than half of all Americans have either had a cataract or have had cataract surgery, the National Eye Institute has reported.

Eye doctors have used femtosecond lasers since 2001 in the first step of LASIK surgery, which corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Now, the technology is being used in cataract surgery.

In 2009, the Food and Drug Administration approved the first femtosecond laser system for cataract surgery. The technology was made available to doctors in 2011.

Traditionally, eye doctors have used a needle-thin ultrasound probe to break up a clouded lens. The fragments are then suctioned out, and an artificial lens is inserted.

Dr. Konrad Filutowski, who operates surgical centers in Daytona Beach and Lake Mary, was one of the first physicians in the state to adopt the new laser technology, making a roughly $1 million investment to purchase two LenSx Laser machines. He started performing laser cataract surgery at his Lake Mary surgical center in December and added it to his Daytona Beach surgical center earlier this month.

Filutowski, who performed Miller's surgery, said the machines allow him to make more accurate cuts that are expected to create better outcomes for his patients.

Filutowski described traditional cataract surgery as a "modern miracle of medicine" that has an excellent safety record.

But laser-assisted surgery has the potential to make a safe procedure even safer and produce better vision, he said.

"No human hand can reproduce the precision of a computer-guided laser," Filutowski said.

Laser cataract surgery is an elective upgrade not covered by Medicare, meaning patients have to pay out of pocket. The upgrade from standard cataract surgery costs $2,300 per eye, Filutowski said.

Professor Culbertson said he expects laser surgery will "gradually become part of modern cataract surgery worldwide."

Right now, though, only a small number of doctors are using it. Culbertson estimated fewer than a dozen physicians have started using the lasers in Florida.

While initial studies show patients who undergo laser cataract surgery have fewer complications and better results, more in-depth studies have not been completed yet, Culbertson said.

Miller said her experience was a positive one. She had the surgery done on June 12 and back to normal within a few days.

"It was just remarkably simple compared to what I had seen my mother and friends go through," she said. "I kept waiting for it to hurt, and there was absolutely no pain."

Filutowski Institute Continues To Debut New Procedures

As seen in "Hometown News from June 22, 2012"

By Erika Webb - For Hometown News. Filutowski Cataract and Lasik Institute strives for 20/20 vision for more than 20 years.

Earlier this month, Dr. Konrad Filutowski performed the first Bladeless Laser Cataract operations to be done in Central Florida in his Daytona Beach office.

On the same day, Filutowski Institute marketing director Janelle Hartmann was answering questions about the institute's success.

Established in 1990, the institute includes two multimillion-dollar clinical and Florida-licensed ambulatory surgical centers, in Daytona Beach and Lake Mary, as well as a state-of-the-art clinical and LASIK center in Orlando's Metro West.

The purchase of two LenSx® femtosecond lasers is further demonstration of Dr. Filutowski's ongoing commitment to provide patients with the latest technology available.

"It was only a matter of time before the femtosecond laser technology, used in LASIK procedures for well over a decade became harnessed to perform the most important steps of cataract surgery," he said. "Bladeless Laser Cataract Surgery has the ability to not only restore vision, but also increases the possibility that with one surgical event, most patients can see well for the majority of their daily activities without the need to wear glasses."

The nationally and internationally recognized refractive surgery leader said cataract surgery is the most frequently performed surgery today and this technology serves to elevate patient comfort and surgical precision to a new level.

Ms. Hartmann said there was a need, when Dr. Filutowski came to Daytona Beach, "for good quality eye care -- not only for retirees but for businesses and families in the area."

She said as the population grew and expanded so did the need for the wide range of services offered at Filutowski, including routine eye exams, LASIK and cataract procedures and treatment of a wide variety of ocular diseases."Daytona Beach offers so much to people, from the young to the young at heart," Dr. Filutowski said. "It's such a lovely community that my parents decided to make it their home."

When he's "out and about in the community" Ms. Hartmann said Dr. Filutowski is always recognized."It's amazing how many people know him and how many lives he's touched as an ophthalmologist," she said.

Working for Dr. Filutowski?"I've been here 14 years and couldn't think of going anyplace else," Ms. Hartmann said. "The doctor is an excellent leader who encourages us to better ourselves through education, and to excel at what we do."

Never had good vision, and over the past eight years that vision has progressively worsened due to cataracts --- soooooo --- CATARACT SURGERY --- in four days!!!

Scary --- YES --- I am very anxious but trying to stay positive --- deep breaths --- that's what helps when I start to get nervous thinking about it

I know the risks --- it's not routine cataract surgery due to my horribly misshapen eyes (-15, -16) --- STAY POSITIVE --- I'm trying!

The degree of myopia can vary from low (-1 to -3 diopters) to high (greater than -6 diopters). Since I'm -15 and -16 I'm on the far end of high, and rather unique.

I thought some of you "old-timers" might be interested in this. I recent had surgery for mild cataracts, that were only a real problem only when trying to drive at night. I had one eye at a time done. I edited this photo to show the difference in color, exposure, and contrast that a new lens makes. This image is a pretty faithful representation of the difference between my two eyes. This morning, I had the 2nd eye done, so I'm in a new brighter world today.

Day 2 taking off the bandage, yay!

i feel like a mountain who was mauled by a bear, its the rain gear i think, it was pouring on our way to the doctor.

Award-winning target rifle shooter, Nick Peters, is eyeing the top prize for the Great Britain International Dewar match team. This is an ambitious feat for Nick, 67, not least because he has had a history of eye problems, which nearly ended his hopes of even competing in the contest.

However, thanks to a series of procedures carried out by Brendan Moriarty, a consultant eye surgeon at The Prospect Eye Clinic, Nick has the precision he needs to be on target for the match.

Nick, who lives in Chester with wife Connie, shares his story: “Rifle shooting is more than just a hobby, it’s a passion of mine. I’ve been shooting for over 50 years, for various clubs in Macclesfield and Leek, as well as my current club, the Appleton in Warrington. Rifle shooting is my pleasure, my motivation and a big part of my life.”

In 1993, after a long and successful run with the Welsh and British Rifle shooting team, culminating in numerous international awards, Nick began to develop eye problems.

Nick recalled: “During a routine eye test, my optician revealed I had an eye haemorrhage and recommend that I see Brendan Moriarty to investigate further.”

Nick went to see Brendan, who is one of the UK’s top eye surgeons, for a consultation. Brendan explained: “Nick came to me with a haemorrhaged eye. This is often caused by a burst blood vessel, which is quite common in older people, and usually clears up within two weeks. However, upon examination, I noticed that Nick showed signs of glaucoma, a disease affecting the optic nerve, so I arranged for some further tests to be done, just to be on the safe side.”

The tests confirmed that Nick did indeed have glaucoma, the second biggest cause of blindness worldwide. Brendan treated this with a Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), a pain-free, non-surgical procedure, in both eyes. The treatment, which takes around five minutes, was successful. As glaucoma is a condition which can redevelop, Nick was monitored by Brendan every six months.

Post-treatment, Nick enjoyed years of success both on a national and international level, winning the Dewar Match in 2005 as part of the British team, beating teams from the United States, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia.

However, the following year, Nick’s glaucoma returned. Again, Brendan was able to treat Nick with the SLT. But in December 2008, Nick was dealt the most devastating blow. He developed a cataract, which is the main treatable cause of damaged vision. Cataracts are cloudy patches in the lens of the eye, which can make vision blurred or misty. If left untreated, cataracts become denser.

Nick commented: “The cataract could have completely ruined my rifle shooting, as the sport involves pinpoint precision. After all I’d been through, I did not want this condition to spell the end of the road. As I’d been treated by Brendan before, he was my first port of call. Just as before, I received the best service possible. Within a couple of weeks I had an operation to remove my cataract as a day case procedure.

Brendan added: “The most effective treatment for cataracts is to surgically remove the cloudy natural lens and insert a clear artificial intraocular lens (IOL). I specialise in micro-incision cataract surgery, where the new lens is inserted through a small incision, which reduces recovery times and the risk of infection, which is why Nick could be in and out in a day.”

Brendan continued: “Nick’s surgery was followed by a YAG laser capsulotomy, which makes a small incision to prevent the film behind the lens thickening like frosted glass. This helps restore vision to how it was before the cataract operation.”

However, Nick begs to differ: “I feel that my eyesight is even better than before. My vision is at its sharpest, which is perfect for my rifle shooting. There was a point when I thought that I might not be able to take part in the competitions again. But thanks to Brendan I can look forward to the summer season of matches and even think about the years to come, as I know that my sight is in safe hands with Brendan. I will always be grateful for that.”

When Brenda Mendham, from Northwich, found out her husband, Stan, was to receive an OBE for services to small businesses, she knew that this was an event she would never forget. Brenda took a prime seat to watch her husband accept his award, but unfortunately, she did not get to witness the event in all its splendour.

This is because, like many millions in the UK, Brenda suffered from age-related long-sightedness. She needed to wear glasses in order to see properly. However, Brenda did not really like her glasses, so she chose not to wear them on special occasions.

Now, Brenda now has permanently perfect vision, after undergoing a new procedure, called ‘No Specs Surgery’. The treatment has had such a profound effect on Brenda’s life that her husband has dubbed her ‘bionic eyes’.

‘No Specs Surgery’ is effectively a catch-all solution for treating all types of glasses dependency, be it long or short sightedness, age-related or astigmatism (abnormal curvature of the eye). The treatment was performed by Brendan Moriarty, a consultant ophthalmologist at The Prospect Eye Clinic, in Altrincham, Cheshire.

Brenda commented: “‘No Specs Surgery’ is a godsend, as I didn’t like wearing my glasses at all. I was increasingly conscious about wearing them. Like many women, I felt that when I got dressed up and applied my make-up, it was a shame to have to pop on my glasses.”

Brenda, who is a great-grandmother, had been wearing glasses for the past twenty years. Brenda recalled: “I had to wear varifocal lenses (long and short) all the time. The glasses gave off different lengths, which made it difficult for me to enjoy my hobbies, like bowls, circuit training and golf, all of which required a lot of focus.

“Glasses were a pain as my grandchildren would pull them off whenever I was reading them a bedtime story. I would have liked to wear contact lenses, but I suffered from dry eye syndrome, so I had no other option but to wear my glasses.”

However, Brenda’s eyesight deteriorated rapidly before she was diagnosed with cataracts by her optician. Cataracts are a clouding of the eyes natural lens that prevents light from entering the eye. Cataracts are more common in older people and can lead to blindness if left untreated.

She was referred to Brendan for cataract removal, when she was told about the ‘No Specs Surgery’, which could remove her cataracts and end her twenty-year dependency on glasses.

“I thought this was too good to be true, but Brendan talked me through the procedure in detail, so I knew exactly what was involved.” Brenda added.

Brendan explained: “‘No Specs Surgery’ is a permanent and effective solution for glasses or contact lens wearers. Replacing the eye’s lens with a Multifocal Lens, which has different focusing powers, allows you to see up-close and at a distance without the need for glasses.

“‘No Specs Surgery’ also gives a person a stable prescription which won’t change over time, so the treatment lasts a lifetime, and in the long run, can save you a lot of money on glasses prescriptions and contact lenses.”

Brenda had her cataracts removed from both eyes. She commented: “My eyes were a little blurry, but within days I could see things clearly. It was only then that I realised just how bad my eyesight actually was. For years my vision had been clouded by a dull yellow, light. I would never read, and rarely watched TV. But now I feel like I‘ve been given my eyesight back.”

With perfect vision, the future is bright for Brenda: “Who knows, if he gets knighted one day, I will be able to witness the event in all its glory, without my glasses!”
