This mural made me think of an old song;

And when the rain

Beats against my window pane

I'll think of summer days again

And dream of you

The artwork is signed Case Maclaim. “Case” is the alias of Andreas von Chrzanowski an artist from the German graffiti scene who was born and raised East Germany.

Lilium bulbiferum, common names orange lily, fire lily, Jimmy's Bane, tiger lily and St. John's Lily, is a herbaceous European lily with underground bulbs, belonging to the Liliaceae.

The Latin name bulbiferum of this species, meaning "bearing bulbs", refers to the secondary bulbs on the stem of the nominal subspecies.

Description

Lilium bulbiferum reaches on average 20–90 centimetres (7.9–35.4 in) of height, with a maximum of 120 centimetres (47 in). The bulbs are ovoid, with whitish large and pointed scales and can reach about 1.5 centimetres (0.59 in) of diameter. The stem is erect, the leaves are lanceolate, up to 10 centimeters long. The inflorescence has one to five short-haired flowers. They are hermaphroditic and scentless, have six upright tepals, the outer are slightly narrower than the inner ones. The flowers can reach 4–6 centimeters in length and are bright yellow-orange with reddish-brown dots. The stamens are erect, about half as long as the tepals, with red anthers. The style is orange, 35 millimetres (1.4 in) of height. The flowering period extends from May through July.

There are two varieties, L. b. var. croceum (Chaix) Baker in the western part of the range, and L. b. var. bulbiferum in its eastern part. Only the last one always produces secondary aerial bulbs (bulbils) in the axils of the upper leaves. These bulbils fall to the ground and mature after two to three years. When manually separated from the stem they can easily be used for propagating the plant.

The dwarf plants from the Maritime Alps, formerly described as var. chaixii (Elwes) Stoker, and the large plants from the region of Naples, formerly described as var. giganteum N. Terracc., are now considered as local variants of var. croceum.

Distribution and habitat

L. bulbiferum is widely distributed in much of Europe from Spain to Finland and Ukraine. It grows in mountain meadows and on hillsides. They prefer calcareous soils in warm, sunny places, but also grow on slightly acid soils. They can be found at an altitude of 500–1,900 metres (1,600–6,200 ft) above sea level.

In culture

The orange lily has long been recognised as a symbol of the Orange Order in Northern Ireland.

Toxicity

Cats are extremely sensitive to lily toxicity and ingestion is often fatal; households and gardens which are visited by cats are strongly advised against keeping this plant or placing dried flowers where a cat may brush against them and become dusted with pollen which they then consume while cleaning. Suspected cases require urgent veterinary attention. Rapid treatment with activated charcoal or induced vomiting can reduce the amount of toxin absorbed (this is time-sensitive so in some cases veterinarians may advise doing it at home), and large amounts of fluid by IV can reduce damage to kidneys to increase the chances of survival

Good grief - how hard can it be to lie down on YOUR OWN blanket-padded dog cot???

Yes, he did eventually lie down.

And if my ancient rechargeable flash batteries weren't failing (both sets - new ones arriving tomorrow) I probably could have gotten something passing out of him.

But THIS is how most of the shoot went... as witnessed by the fact I actually TOOK this picture, in case this was all I got... so it seems only fitting to have this be his official shot for the day.

So there.

(What is Toby staring at? My hand, holding a cookie, resting on the floor. Down... down... DOWN! My wonderful dog trainer from three dogs back would have been aghast.)

The prompt for today was A Pencil Case. This is my go-everywhere pencil case. Unfortunately, today it has no pencil in it, but the prompt only asked for the case! So I fulfilled the brief. The case does contain a pencil sharpener just in the unlikely event that a pencil jumps into the case and needs sharpening. This is the slimmed down version of the real pencil case which holds so many odds and ends that I have difficulty zipping it up.

Tooling around back roads in Marathon county and just had to stop for this barn. The farm house is abandoned as well, but I think the fields are still worked since there was a lot of mud and tracks in the driveway. Possibly someone is trying save it though judging by the giant tarp.

This guitar case is the best place for sleeping. My cat Pixel sleeping on the case and the other fuzzball Ozzy is right behind her. By the way this cat is huge she weighs 14lbs and easily stretches from one end to the other of the guitar case.

India is still under a huge pall of Covid 19 pandemic with the highest death and infection fevers. People are not dying so much because of the disease but because of lack of facilities and non vaccination of the populace. Democracy skews sometimes and brings forth leaders who are popular but are totaly unfit to think rationally.

Continuing this series on the Elephant at Work in one of the Saw Mills in Fort Kochi.

The tiny shifts and maneuvers that the elephant makes to move such heavy loads is a case in point in this series. The deft way with which the trunk is being used to pull the tree can be seen here. Not much body effort either.

The elephant is a gentle giant and has been to a certain extent used extensively in Kerala for ceremonial parades for Hindu temples.

The non temple elephants also work on per hour basis in timber yards moving tree trunks, stacking and unstacking.

Other than that elephants used to be the bulwark of the armies of the Indian kings as they fought off the invasions coming from the Khyber Pass into the rich fertile plains of India. That worked for some time but then the horses and guns changed that.

Two trees stand atop a promontory above a foggy Pacific Ocean view, Point Lobos.

This photograph, the final in a set I’ve shared recently, comes from a half-day visit to Point Lobos one foggy late-July morning. For is always fun, but in this case it was extra special. California suffered through some extremely hot weather back in July, and I headed to the coast to try to find some relief. I found it! While the temperatures back home were heading well into the upper nineties, here along the coast it was in the upper fifties under the overcast. I spent the morning and early afternoon wandering through the park.

These trees are Monterey cypresses, native to this locale along the rugged coast. Here they grow along the tops of cliffs that drop steeply into the ocean. This promontory is along the north shore of Point Lobos where some of the higher cliffs are found. While the fog here was high enough to reveal the trees, a short distance offshore it was right on the water.

First post after a short break, so I thought I'd share something special. This is such a gorgeous daguerreotype, but the really exciting bit is what was found behind the image. As will be seen in the comments below, there was a tiny pressed rose, a lock of hair, and two poems. The debate (and research) is still ongoing as to whether they are death poems, and who Rosa might be; indeed whether she is even the girl in the photograph.

Estimated date ca 1850 based on the image frame and overall feel, but needs an expert eye on the clothing I think.

It's fun to go back and look over some old photos once in awhile...this was the Nickel Plate on the move to the Quad Cities for Train Fest in 2011. On July 20, it ventured north out of Peoria on the Iowa Interstate, passing the Case dealership at Henry, IL.
