Hiding in the Grasses

This big guy snuck up to the river and stayed hidden in the grasses. I was happy to get a shot of him. The lesson with this is to always be cautious in the forest. We were quite a long distance and near the tower and bus and the watchers picked up where he was. What a beauty.

End of Day Orca

At the end of a long wonderful day as we were coming into Campbell River harbour, we were treated with a little Orca show. What a nice end to a great 2023 Grizzly Trip. Morning Highlights

This morning’s light was really lovely, so I practiced a bit with highlight metering [(•*)]. I don’t use this often as it tends to give darker images than I gravitate to, but today’s light was a nice way to practice. January Golf in BC?

You bet! And, it was wonderful! My friend and I played a fun 18 hole round at our club, Pheasant Glen, today. We had several moments of sunshine, I even had my coat off a few times, and the course is in great shape with even some roll. Life can’t get much better than this in our beautiful province.

These beautiful Pacific White Sided Dolphins are so much fun when they come to play alongside boats, but oh so hard to photograph when everything is moving so fast. I was really happy to find I actually got a shot of a mother and babe swimming side by side in the glacier blue waters.

Moody Highlight Metering

I’ve been working with highlight metering this week and tried it yesterday with King Tide waves off Kinkade Road Beach. It was a fairly dark day, and I had a super fast shutter speed going. These shots are definitely different than when I use centred metering, but I do like the play of light off sand and tips of waves.

It was really hard to spot this guy making his way up the river tucked under an overhang. Of course it is a great place for fish to be, so it makes sense this is where he’d hunt for food. I definitely had to pull up the shadows in post production to see these details, but what a cool experience to watch him work the waters.

Of course my favourites series must include a section on rocks! This geology girl will always have an affinity with rocks. When there are rocks with fuzzy water - what could be better? This shot was taken back when I was teaching myself how to shoot long exposure shots. I spent a lot of time right down in the ocean that year with my little crop sensor Nikon d7500. Still a great little camera to teach grandkids on. Maybe they’d like to go crawl around down at the beach with me?

I’m quite enjoying revisiting this Grizzly Bear Adventure from last October. I’m finding hidden gems tucked away in all the thousands of photos from that day. This shot more on the series of a huge male catching and eating his prize salmon. This one was taken early on when he just made the catch. It was so fun watching him make his way through branches and logs to chase down his meal.

Smoky Moon

Tried out my new 400mm z mount lens with 2x teleconverter to photograph the full moon. Wow! So light and I’m not disappointed with this middle of the night moon shot. I’m still fiddling with focus on the z7ii, but looking forward to the z9 when it finally gets here… the wait is hard haha.

Beaches are for dog agility, right? Len and Rylee ran Nikki and Moose over the rocks. Nikki wasn’t quite sure of what she was to do at the start, but with some gentle coaxing by Len, she figured it out. When Len reached down to give her a pat she gave him a thank you kiss. Gotta love doggie thank you licks!

Pattern of a Whale Tail

I’m revisiting this whale tail from what I posted awhile back to show you the pattern on the tail. I usually focus on the water splash, but there is so much beauty to watching the entire sequence of a tail flap. Of course, I always hope for a breach, but these lovely tail flaps as the whales feed and gently swim are stunning to watch. This is actually two whales together as you can see by the tail of one and the blow of the other. We figured it was a mum and babe still staying around in the waters off Campbell River while most of the others had travelled South.

Congratulations to my wonderful friend and student, Erin, on accomplishing a year of wonderful photographic challenges. Erin came to me in the beginning of 2022 asking to embrace photography. This led to an amazing year of adventures, lessons, laughter, a few tears along the way, and hundreds of amazing images! We spent a lovely celebratory day at Buchart Gardens yesterday - never say never - photographing flowers, gardens, people, dogs, hidden treasures and each other. Down to the River

There is a visitor centre now at the bottom of Salt River Canyon and the old gas station that I remember from when I was a kid is now abandoned and crumbling. From what we could tell, you can no longer take these steps down to the river. I was happy to see this new visitor centre detailing the richness and history of this stunning canyon. This river has fed and nourished communities and cultures for hundreds if not thousands of years.

For those of you wondering, the horizon in straight, that boat is rocking with the water. That constant boat movement makes it pretty interesting to get clear shots. Moments of Laughter

While out photographing on the Wild Pacific Trail today these three college age girls passed by us just laughing and enjoying each other’s company and the snowy day. On the way out they were climbing a tree and just giggling and laughing. It was so cute, I asked if I could take their photo. They all laughed and agreed! It was such a fun moment. As we walked away Len turns to me and said, “We need to have more moments like those girls where we just laugh at nothing”. We both laughed and I said “We just did!”

To you girls: thanks for making our day, and to all my past students I want you to know I really miss teaching college kids!

Sandcut Falls

Favourites Series: Water Drops 💦

I’m including this throwback waterfall shot of Sandcut Beach which is between Sooke and Port Renfrew on Vancouver Island, not only because it is beautiful, but to talk about the adventure of getting to waterfalls. I have found there are very few waterfalls that are easily accessible from roads or even short paths (exception of Englishman River). This one is quite a downhill climb followed by a beach hike. Timing is everything with tides, as well. I have heard there is an easier way in, and if I am ever going to see this waterfall again it will need to be by that route or by boat. I would love to hear of any accessible waterfalls you know of that I can visit!

Up and Up Again

Before I show you all the beauty shots of Gabriola Golf Club, I want to talk about about holes 1/10 and 2/11…. These seemingly wide fairways are just an illusion as they seem to go on forever, slope steeply toward the lake below and have out of bounds all along the right side where wisdom tells you to place your shot. The fairways are thick, sloped, and go on and on - or up and up again. So many greens are hidden, so to those playing here for the first time, you are coming blind into the green. This difficulty catches you right off the first tee! Keep going, though, the landscapes are beautiful.

Mother and Babe

This mum and her two cubs were very elusive. One cub kept sounding the alarm when it would see us. We were all pretty camouflaged and silent, but it knew we were there. Our guides said that earlier in the season there were three cubs and they thought the siblings must have seen the other taken causing them to be ultra cautious. That was sad to hear, but all part of nature’s cycle.

I was surprised to have this photo turn out as it was such a bright spot with a dark background. I am excited to get into editing this sequence. Stay tuned.

Grand Finale

Well wonderful followers, the time has come to close out this seven week series of a wonderful three days spent on the water out of Campbell River with Stuart Clark and Stan Novotny of West Coast Wildlife Photography Workshops. This full breached Humpback Whale was actually taken on our first pass out of the bay. I do believe it was just an actual fluke of having my camera up and firing continuously hoping for anything. In fact the entire trip followed this theme, as most wildlife photographers will attest. Photographing moving wildlife from a rocking and moving boat is certainly a trick. I love this photo so much that it is to become a print for our living room wall!

It is now time to move on to new projects, test out new lenses, and update my website. If you would like any prints from this series, please shoot me a message. Sibling Love

Throughput the day I ponder on what I want to post for the day. Some days, and weeks, I have a series I’m working on and other times I just go day by day. Today the light was completely flat, so rather than new photos I took a look back through shots I’ve taken in the last several weeks. This lovely shot of three of my grandkids popped out at me for the beautiful colours, but mainly for the image showing their love for one another. We are fortunate to see these three on almost a daily basis and hardly ever see or hear them arguing. They do, don’t get me wrong, but rarely. They seem to always be in sync. For this shot, I didn’t pose them only said, “Head over to the bridge” and this is what they did. Gotta love some old fashioned sibling love 💕

We had the absolute pleasure to watch our grand daughter, Ava, barrel racing today! We are more than proud of her accomplishments with horseback riding and the incredible life skills she is developing. She was sad to not be riding her usual horse, but gave it her all today riding Antique. I can’t wait to watch her grow in her chosen sport!

Mum’s and cubs practice hyper vigilance in their surroundings as they are prey to male grizzlies, dominant females, cougars and wolves. They are quick to look up when they sense anything out of the ordinary and are always cautious.

It’s all About the Stance

As I’m working through sharing this series, this shot struck me in how important a good stance is to every sport. We talk about stance a lot in skiing and golf. Dance is always about being in balance. Tennis, soccer, snowboarding, all require an athletic stance. Wind surfing is no different. I debated giving you a cropped shot of just the stance, but decided the full shot gives you the feel of the importance of an overall balanced feel.
