Caps, mixed media on board, 12”x16”

This year I have been collecting all sorts of beer-related items to make art, or as I prefer to call it “Beeraphernalia.” I knew something had to be done with all these different bottle caps (sadly I have not been able to try all these beers myself – yet.). Here it is, over 100 bottle caps from the familiar to the exotic.

Caps will be included in my upcoming exhibit at San Francisco’s City Beer in October.

Bunkers - Cap Ferret - France

Cap Blanc Nez (literally "Cape White Nose" in English) was a cape on the Côte d'Opale, in the Pas-de-Calais département, in northern France. The cliffs of chalk are very similar to the white cliffs of Dover at the other side of the Channel in England. Cap Blanc Nez is no longer a cape but a cliff that is topped by an obelisk commemorating the Dover Patrol which kept the Channel free from U-boats during World War I.

This is a rare Coca-Cola Fiber Optic Bottle Cap Light. This is the only one I have ever seen offered on eBay. This light is brand new and has never been taken out of the box. Box shows little signs of wear. Light measures between 12-13" in diameter. This was made by Rabbit Tanaka Entertainment Lighting in 2004. This is an officially licensed Coca-Cola product. From the picture it looks like multi-colored lights surround the bottle and Coca-Cola lettering - they move/change and give a very cool retro show. Light is in the shape of a bottle cap and is not a square box. I think I paid around $100 eight years ago when this item was introduced. 99% of my Coca-Cola collectibles have never been removed from the original box, including this light.

All items come with a 14-day return and ship FREE.

Notes:

Want hat to go with the Eloise sweater. Think it looks cute.

I wish the pattern had gauge. I thought I was doing okay as it has some stretch, but it was hard to tell until I had a fair bit done. But it should stretch to about 18”-19”.

I decided to create a yo every 6 rows while knitting the flat piece that makes up the brim. I tried a few different thing to try to simulate the yos on th Eloise sweater but none really gave the same look. I was going to run a ribbon through the yos. But I opted for some contrasting yarn instead. But with the way it rolls, it is largely invisible.

I like getting to use some leftover handspun as well. I think it looks good. Though the handspun is heavier than the Fatima yarn.

With the ridges, I did the first one as the pattern was written, 6 purl in color b and 4 rows stockinette. But I wanted more of color a (Fatima to show), so for the next repeat, I did 5 purls and 5 rows of stockinette. For the final rows of color b, I did 4 purl rows. I add on the 2 rows in color a before beginning the decreases. I figured this way, it would go in a bit.

Since color b, my handspun, is thicker, it makes the ridges even more pronounced. I like the way that looks. Definitely a good combo.

I tried doing the crochet chain stitch at the seam where you pick up the stitches. But it didn’t allow for as much stretch as I needed, so I pulled it out. This could just boil down to the fact that I am not a crocheter, so my stitches were too tight. I left that off. With the way the brim rolls, I don’t think you really see it.

I ended up deciding to do chain stitch for the piece to run through the yos in the brim piece. With the way the brim rolls, it is largely invisible. But the little bow at the back of the hat is cute.

I am debating adding a chain stitch cord to tie it on. DD tends to pull hats off. So it is smarter to have that.

I was debating if ear flaps would work on this hat. I am leaning towards no. But they might really help during the winter, so I may change my mind… Though I will probably just make a different hat with flaps!

I admit that using the Headhuggers pattern is really making me think I need to go through the stash and find some suitable yarn for a chemo hat. I haven’t done any charity knitting in a while. And I really should!

My son's class is studying immigration to America. As part of the unit, they do an Ellis Island simulation, and they are all expected to dress the part of immigrants from the early 19th century. This knitted cap was a quick, last-minute addition to his costume.

Pattern: Berroco KAP (free pattern here)

Size: One size, for adult women. (My children have huge heads. The hat is a little big for me, but fits my seven-year-old just fine.)

Material: less than one 100 gram skein of Malabrigo Chunky. I don't know the name of the colorway, but it is chocolate brown with flecks of orange, green, blue, and yellow.

Needles: Size 10 bamboo circular (the cap is knitted flat and seamed together, though, so straights would be fine).

The pattern is kind of weird. I'm not at all sure I like the whole stack-of-pancakes look. But as a little boy's old-fashioned cap, it looks pretty cute. And it only took about three hours from start to finish! Oddly enough, my incredibly picky son actually likes it, despite how he looks in the picture. In his defense, he has a cold and wasn't all that excited about posing for me.
