Cape Coral, Florida

Yesterday morning at the Four Mile Cove Eco Park. I had the place to myself. What a nice bonus with the sun rising and reflecting on the water through the mangroves. Oh and hints of fall on the boardwalk!

More a description of their appearance in this image than a suggestion that these two Burrowing Owlets had enjoyed a good night out!

This parent was taking some well earned time away from the kids, who were only a few feet away, but remained alert for the first sign of any danger. On one occasion it made a short alarm call and immediately the owlets disappeared into the burrow ..... they didn't need telling twice like some kids I know 😂

Several Burrowing Owls were seen at Cape Coral, Florida. This owl at its nest was digging in the loose sandy soil on the perimeter of a baseball field. Others were seen in housing tracts, open fields and near a shopping strip.

Monk Parakeets are endemic to the lowlands of southern South America, but they have carved out a place for themselves in areas of Florida and beyond. They are larger (11.5", 29cm), louder and more aggressive than the familiar caged pet "budgies" (7", 18cm) which are native to Australia.

An earlier post (also shown in the first comment below) shows four of the colony of Monk Parakeets at Cape Coral, Florida.

Whoa - I almost fell off there!

Taken at Cape Coral, Florida a few years ago. I'm not a great fan of photos of ringed birds but I quite like the pose and the sunrise in the catchlight in the eye.

A colony of Monk Parakeets, one of the many invasive species in Florida, was observed on Cape Coral, Florida. Since they are non-migratory, they are there to stay. (Another invasive parakeet species is shown in the first comment below).

They are colorful, but they are also noisy and aggressive. This colony had constructed a large nest made of sticks in a light tower at an athletic field.

This little burrowing owl chick was having a difficult time balancing on this perch, flapping its wings to try and stay put without falling off. Too cute!

It's a great time to photograph Burrowing Owls now in Florida. The nests are holding multiple chicks and they are starting to make their appearance

above ground. This one was taken in Cape Coral, Florida. The owls often live in close proximity to people, found in parks, ball fields, airports and lawns. Their nests, large wholes in sandy soil, are usually protected by ropes. The male stands guard, usually above the nest on provided PVC stands or in a nearby tree, and the female stays closer to the chicks. This is a male, who was going between the perch by the nest whole and a nearby baseball field fence. (Athene cunicularia)

This young Burrowing Owlet most probably hadn't seen too many sunrises so it's no wonder it was completely entranced ... as we were with this little beauty.

It does look as though this Burrowing Owl should be holding a drink although that glassy eye suggests he might have already had one too many!

While there's no little owlets this time of year, the adults are still pretty expressive with their big, colorful eyes!

The stakes and cross bars are put up by the locals to highlight which burrows are occupied in order to keep the Burrowing Owls safe. The Owls in turn like to use them to sit on.

It had just collected some fluff from the road near its burrow and was now returning to the burrow with it.

This burrowing owl chick was working on both its flying skills and keeping its balance. Kinda like walking and chewing gum at the same time?

Fun with burrowing owls. No trip to Florida is complete for me without "hanging" with this year's broods of burrowing owl chicks. This year did not disappoint!
