Atalanta Beach - Cape Verde:

In 1968, a transport ship called "Cabo Santa Maria" ran aground on the coast of Boa Esperança, to the north of the island. More than 4 decades later, the ship's wreckage has become one of the island's attractions. Practically in the middle of nowhere, the site offers a striking view of the steel ship, its remains assailed by the constant waves.

A break in the storm front, a little before sunset, yielded these interesting colors in the sky. An hour later it was pouring, again.

Cape Kiwanda is part of the Three Capes Scenic Route (along with Cape Meares and Cape Lookout). Kiwanda is the smallest of the three, but it is one of the best places to experience spectacular wave action. Pacific City is the home of the Pacific Dory Fleet. South of Cape Kiwanda is the dory boat launching area. North of Cape Kiwanda to Tierra Del Mar is a stretch of beach popular with picnickers. Kiwanda provides great hang gliding and kite flying opportunities.

This was part of an interesting walk. I had reached the lighthouse and turned back. Mani, Peloponnese, Greece.

It was a lovely clear morning at Cape Pillar. Cape Hauy can be seen in the immediate foreground. Behind is Tatnell's Hill near Waterfall Bay. The distinctive three hills forming the landmass of Southern Maria Island can be seen on the right in the distance.

Given its unpredictable temper, the African buffalo is particularly difficult to tame and has never been domesticated like its relative, the Asian water buffalo. Additionally, these animals are considered to be extremely dangerous. They fiercely protect themselves and each other against predators and are known to move in to support another buffalo that is under attack by a lion or other predator. They are very courageous animals.

I had three cape daisies last year but a week of heavy frost killed them off in the winter. A neighbour has one that's thrived for years so I'm not sure what I did wrong. Well, I bought three new ones, and this is my favourite.

In 1444, the Ottoman Empire invaded Bulgaria, burning and raping their way across the country. Girls who were captured by the Ottomans were either kept for the pleasure of the officers or sent to join the Sultan’s harem at Constantinople. When the Ottoman army approached Cape Kaliakra, 40 local girls fled to the end of the headland with the intent of killing themselves. They tied their hair together to be sure that none of them would yield to their fear and jumped together from the 70 metres high cliff. A memorial obelisk known as ‘The Gate of the 40 Maidens’ now stands at the entrance to the cape.

Legend or true story?

This is scenic "Cabo Finisterre" in Galicia, Spain. The Cape is one of the westernmost points in Spain and western Europe. Needless to say that it is also one of the most beautiful coastal regions in Galicia. Perfect location to enjoy "gambas" (shrimp) with a cup of refreshing "Albariño Casero" (local homemade wine).

By the way, for those wondering this a HDR composite of three (3) shots.

Another striking scene observed from the other side of the Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint.

A must-see when driving the Three Capes Scenic route, Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint is situated on a headland over 200 feet above the ocean. Cape Lookout and Cape Kiwanda are the other two capes on this route.

The cape is named for the 18th century British naval officer, trader and explorer John Meares.
