An egret looking very pretty in the evening sun amongst colorful grass. Behind this steely look is a fierce and capable hunter. I witnessed one catch and swallow a couple of field mice within minutes a few days earlier

So, we finally got to a computer that was capable of running the Spore Creature Creator. We've only used the free trial edition at this point, but, as expected, Sophia and Enzo created a series of interesting creatures. See some of them in this set. My personal favorites are Whale, Human and Pickle (my name for that one).

Balloon is my favorite of all – in no small part because The Red Balloon was one of my favorite films while growing up and is still in my top ten. I haven't seen this one yet though.

Spore Creature Creator is now highly recommended by us and we are all looking forward to playing the game Spore (more here) when it is released in September. By then we will have upgraded our operating system and should have no problem.

This little, popcan-sized Northern Pygmy-owl looks so cute and innocent, but in reality, it is a ferocious hunter that is capable of killing things that are the same size or even a bit bigger than itself. It is a celebrity in our city at the moment, bringing crowds of curious people and masses of huge camera lenses.

Yesterday, 24 January 2015, I saw it again, after about 10 days of not seeing it - I had called in at the park very briefly on a couple of recent days, but heard that no one had seen the owl. All that changed yesterday, when it gave us some good chances to get photos. It really seems to be quite tolerant of people and even flew into some bushes near where everyone was standing. Only those who were willing or able to kneel or lie flat in the melting snow and puddles (which excluded me) got a really good view through the absolute tangle of thin branches. I managed to get a handful of shots, but was too tired and my eyes too blurry to edit any of them last night. So, instead, I am posting a photo taken on 12 January that I had already edited a few days ago. I did remove a few very distracting branches so that the focus was solely on this tiny bundle of feathers, who spends its daytimes watching and waiting for the slightest movement down below of yet another Meadow Vole.

Budapest, Jewish Quarter

Erzsébetváros

Budapest is a living history, and few streets are capable of taking you back in time like Király utca, which divides District VI and District VII.

Before World War II, Király utca (King Street) was one of Pest’s grand boulevards and central shopping streets. Jewish and gentile shop owners sold haberdashery, cut hair, sold jewelry and foodstuffs. There was actually a trolley that ran up and down the cobblestone street, ferrying shoppers from one end to the other.

Strolling down Király these days, you will come across many unique small shops and unique spaces, including used book stores, pubs, and design stores. At Király 19, if the gate happens to be open, go to the back of the builiding, through the passageway, and you will find the last remaining portion of the ghetto wall that kept many of Budapest’s Jewish population contained during the Nazi occupation.

Despite the Nazis’ retreat, the dangers in the ghetto persisted, and this was a very dangerous street to be found on. Jews were hunted day and night by the blood-thirsty, virulently anti-Semitic Arrow Cross party, a Hungarian militia who took it upon themselves to finish the job the Nazis started. They killed an estimated 25,000 Jews in the brief period from 1944-1945, during and after the Nazi occupation.

Scanning the buildings, you can spot pock marks in the facades. These are bullet holes are from building-to-building urban warfare, most likely during the Siege of Budapest in WWII, when the city was taken from the Germans block by block. Though the street is not named for him, Imre Kertész was one of the Jews from Budapest who was rounded up and deported, sent to Auschwitz first, then eventually imprisoned in Buchenwald. His novel Fatelessness was a fictionalized version of that upheaval, and would contribute to his winning of the Nobel Prize in literature, Hungary’s first.

Much of the history of ‘King Street’ is tragic. But the street itself is still alive with activity and commerce – and is visually captivating as always.

These are a few shots of the Tri-colored Heron that I posted earlier posing all straight and tall! He/she is also capable of launching off of that old dead tree in the water at any angle! Photos taken on Horsepen Bayou!

I want to add that even though I am posting three different views of this particular bird in action, I in no way expect people to comment on every photo! In the past I left the comments on for only one shot, but some complained that they wanted to comment on the other scenes! Just take you pick and enjoy the mastery of this balancing act!

The scarlet ibis (Eudocimus ruber) is a species of ibis in the bird family Threskiornithidae. It inhabits tropical South America and islands of the Caribbean. In form it resembles most of the other twenty-seven extant species of ibis, but its remarkably brilliant scarlet coloration makes it unmistakable. It is one of the two national birds of Trinidad and Tobago.

Adult plumage is virtually all scarlet. The feathers may show various tints and shades, but only the tips of their wings deviate from their namesake color. A small but reliable marking, these wingtips are a rich inky black (or occasionally dark blue) and are found only on the longest primaries[8] – otherwise the birds' coloration is "a vivid orange-red, almost luminous in quality."[9] Scarlet ibises have red bills and feet however the bill is sometimes blackish, especially toward the end.[10] They have a long, narrow, decurved bill. Their legs and neck are long and extended in flight.[11]

A juvenile scarlet ibis is a mix of grey, brown, and white. As it grows, a heavy diet of red crustaceans produces the scarlet coloration. The color change begins with the juvenile's second molt, around the time it begins to fly: the change starts on the back and spreads gradually across the body while increasing in intensity over a period of about two years. The scarlet ibis is the only shorebird with red coloration in the world.

Adults are 55–63 centimeters (22–25 in) long, and the males, slightly larger than females, typically weigh about 1.4 kilograms (3.1 lb). Their bills are also on average around 22% longer than those of females. The life span of the scarlet ibis is approximately sixteen years in the wild and twenty years in captivity. An adult scarlet ibis has a wingspan of around 54 centimeters (21 in). Though it spends most of its time on foot or wading through water, the bird is a very strong flyer: they are highly migratory and easily capable of long-distance flight. They move as flocks in a classic V formation.

The heaviest bird capable of flight is the kori bustard, Ardeotis kori.

These southern African birds can weigh up to 19 kilogrammes and have a wingspan of up to 2.75 metres.

While they can fly, these hefty birds spend most of their time on the ground foraging for food such as caterpillars, dung beetles and a variety of grasses and seeds.

The Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) family of vehicles provides Soldiers with highly survivable multimission platforms capable of mitigating improvised explosive devices, rocket-propelled grenades, explosively formed penetrators, underbody mines and small arms fire threats which produce the greatest number of casualties in Overseas Contingency Operations.

The Army MRAP enduring fleet is comprised of two primary vehicle platforms, the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected All-Terrain Vehicle (M-ATV) and the MaxxPro Family of Vehicles. This versatile family of vehicles performs the mission roles of Armored Personnel Carrier, Weapons Carrier, Convoy Protection Platform, Key Leader Vehicle, Command Post and Armored Ambulance.

MRAP's also provide light forces with protected mobility and mounted firepower to perform Wide Area Security while countering threats employing asymmetric tactics. Monarchs are capable of flying 2,000 miles from Canada to Mexico and back to the southern United States.

Millions migrate every autumn, often stopping in the same rest spots each year.

Some even fly as far as Hawaii and eastern Australia. In early spring and summer the returning females travel north in relays, new generations replacing old, laying their eggs along the way.

It is a large tree, capable of reaching heights of up to 50 m (160 ft) tall and 3 m (9.8 ft) trunk diameter, though more typically 25–35 m (82–115 ft) tall and up to 1.5 m (4.9 ft) trunk diameter. A 10-year-old sapling will stand about 4 m (13 ft) tall. It has a typical lifespan of 150 to 200 years, though sometimes up to 300 years. 30 years are needed to attain full maturity (as compared to 40 for American beech). Like most trees, its form depends on the location: in forest areas, F. sylvatica grows to over 30 m (100 ft), with branches being high up on the trunk. In open locations, it will become much shorter (typically 15–24 m (50–80 ft)) and more massive.

as mentioned before, naked bulb is capable of being subtle...but only under heavy manners. behind the scenes on this one.....not pretty.

I enjoy the emergent features in my body breeding, the way my hands close on you, the way my eyes are capable of describing the colourful and seedy scenery that surrounds me. Inside and outside of the light-filled bubble I inhabit your blood keeps me warm, your crushed watering voice lives in my womb and I save the foggy memories for the day next.

Out in the streets the eyes my teeth rip apart, the casual shoulders my fingernails slash, the shining invisible my chest touches, out of the blue the time lapses and the washed out colours induced by the smoke are gone. Holding a pencil with two fingers a view from the dwarf-magnolia tree to the entry curtains, I can feel both the life and waves between my fingers bordering to abyss and the dying quakes of cars going by.

The back of my spine tingles when I think of you, framed in the morning when all residents walking their dogs and homeless still hang out at Logan and cars and I feel like a fool with the sun trying to keep me from going to bed, twirling and jumping. There must be stages between love and monstrosity that I do not know. When this will be over and there will be no more work to do you will tell me what they are.

I go to the front garden, feeling too heavy to take myself out, yet unable to stay indoors. I like the view through the main gate, a framed and layered low angle view of the ground at the bottom. I hear you screaming in the late hours when all returners have returned, forth and around through these alleys and corridors where clients have established themselves with their habits and friends.

The sunset lasts forever with one german family in towels winding up carelessly on the benches. On the open-ended scale of fun the neighbours are curious to draw. Sidewalks are turning grey, heavy and wet. Eyes are sticking onto the poles and staying there. I stare at you and poles start swinging. Walking right into the water, focusing my fangs on your neck.

A girl busy with her juice while ownership and waitresses and options are discussed, the trends, the future plans. In time and days the crowd changes. Age, hair and colours change, music fades into music as the disco at the other end preps for another round. I pull the door open. Tilting my head towards the stars I raise my arms up to my head closing them together until my hands meet. Everything turns into nothing.

The new boat lift was opened in 1962 and has a trough length of 90 meters, a width of 12 meters, and a draft of 3 meters. It was capable of lifting vessels of up to 1350 tonnes. This lift utilizes the same construction principles as the old lift but using only two floats in two float chambers.

The new lift soon became too small for the navigation's requirements and a new ship lock allowing boats 190 meters long and 12 meters wide, allowing a 4 meter displaced depth was built next to the lift in 1989.

The new lift was taken out of use in December 2005 because of technical problems. The lift may not be repaired on the grounds of cost and the decreased usage of Dortmund Port. Problems or maintenance requirements on the modern lock would, without the lift, bring about the closure of Dortmund Port.

Important to know: Iguanas are capable of severely injuring people, other animals and themselves when their body language signals are not recognized. Most iguanas clearly sign that trouble is ahead. They nod their head and wave their dewlap side to side. The dewlap is a fold of loose skin hanging from the neck or throat of an animal, such as a cow.

Iguanas use their dewlap to communicate. First, an extended dewlap can simply be a greeting, away to say hello to another creature during mating but most generally as a territorial sign. Second, it can be a form of protection. A threatened iguana may extend its dewlap to intimidate a predator into thinking it is much larger than it is. Third, an extended dewlap may be a sign that the iguana is trying to adjust its temperature. An extended dewlap on an iguana basking in the sun is quite normal. It may be catching more sun to warm up or a breeze to cool off. So it's important to see "the big picture" when reading Iguana body language.

They are capable of rapid movement on the ground. Small individuals may climb trees to escape, but larger ones prefer to escape on the ground. They can climb well. On the ground, they sometimes stand on the hind legs to get a better view or when males fight other males. They can also swim well and can stay submerged for at least 17 minutes. They can use both trees and bushes for shelter

Bengal monitors are usually solitary and usually found on the ground, although the young are often seen on trees. V. b. nebulosus has a greater propensity for tree climbing. The two sympatric species Bengal and Yellow Monitor partially separated their habitat as Bengal Monitor prefers Forest over agricultural areas. Bengal monitors shelter in burrows they dig or crevices in rocks and buildings, whilst clouded monitors prefer tree hollows. Both races will make use of abandoned termite mounds. Bengal monitors, like other varanids, show true sleep at night and are diurnal, becoming active around 6 AM and bask in the morning sun. During winter, in the colder parts of their distribution range, they may take shelter and go through a period of reduced metabolic activity. They are not territorial, and may change their range seasonally in response to food availability.

They are usually shy and avoid humans. They have keen eyesight and can detect human movement nearly 250 m away. When caught, a few individuals may bite, but rarely do so.

Although, they are also found on agricultural land, they prefers forest with large trees.Generally, high ground cover with large trees are favorable areas

Captives have been known to live for nearly 22 years.Predators of adults include pythons, mammalian predators and birds. A number of ectoparasites and endoparasites are recorded.

This little egret was a capable hunter. It succeeded in catching more than a dozen tiny fish for half an hour of my observation. Also, I was much impressed by its skill of deftly moving its leg repeatedly in seaweeds floating in a tide pool to force out small fish from their shelter.

Happy Caturday!

Lionesses give birth to 2-3 cubs at a time. Usually, a couple females give birth around the same time. The cubs are then raised together, sometimes nursing communally.

Lioness with cubs are vulnerable to predators like hyenas, leopards, and black-backed jackals, cubs have a 60-70% mortality rate. They are sometimes trampled by large animals like buffaloes. Furthermore, when another group of male lions takes over a pride, they kill all the cubs so they can sire their own with the lionesses.

Female cubs stay with the group as they age. At around two years old, they become capable hunters. But young males are forced out of the pride at that age. They form bachelor groups and follow migrating herds until they are strong enough to challenge male lions of other prides. In general, a group of males stays in power in the pride for around three years before another bachelor group takes it over. – Wikipedia

Everyone seemed to be on the lookout for the Puffins or Gannets, so these little birds were mostly ignored. This is a Razorbill, also known as the lesser auk.

They are primarily black with a white underside, I also noticed it’s virtually impossible to see their eyes. The male and female are identical in plumage, however, males are generally larger than females, though having seen quite a few pairs it was difficult to tell the difference. They are agile birds capable of both flight and diving, living mainly an aquatic lifestyle and only coming to land in order to breed. They are monogamous, choosing one partner for life. Females lay one egg per year, both parents take turns in incubating the egg and feeding the chick.

This one was just preparing for flight, his/her partner had just taken off out across the North Sea.

Lake Sammamish, from Marymoor Park.

for those of you who remember my series on Lake Sammamish, NO, this is NOT from two years ago! i actually took it yesterday morning. i decided to give it a try at going to the lake again, early in the morning yesterday. no regrets having done so. it was so amazing that i actually went back this morning, despite the freezing temperatures.

i admit i am more interested in architectures, silhouettes, as well as situations where both can be smartly combined into successful scenes. However, neglecting landscape photography is just not good. besides, the black and white approach allows me so see things in an entirely different angle. kind of like a renewal, for the better. No need to say, it was a job for my 5dmkII as well as telephoto lenses.

having bought an m9 as well as the ricoh GRDiv, i soon realized i wasn't going to be capable to selling my L glass and long lenses in exchange. maybe one day, but for now they're still part of my creative process.

on a side note: this is shot at f14. the problem is that the 5dmkII sensor is SO dusty, i had litterally dozens of black dots on the photo. it took me 20 minutes to remove all of them. i guess shooting above f4 is becoming an issue with such a dusty sensor.

The Space Shuttle Enterprise (NASA Orbiter Vehicle Designation: OV-101) was the first Space Shuttle orbiter. It was built for NASA as part of the Space Shuttle program to perform test flights in the atmosphere. It was constructed without engines or a functional heat shield, and was therefore not capable of spaceflight. On September 17, 1976 the first full scale prototype was completed.

Made for the Freedonian Military in DA3!

In the mid-1950s, BMW was on the verge of bankruptcy: motorcycle production was falling dramatically. On the automotive side, large vehicles such as the 503 and 507 types were produced at a loss, due to an overly complicated design. "The primary objective was therefore to integrate into the program a car capable of replenishing the funds as quickly as possible", explains Axel Klinger-Köhnlein, expert of the BMW Group Classic.

BMW therefore needed a new model without being able to afford to spend a fortune in its development. The solution arose at the Turin Motor Show in 1954: a 3-wheel car equipped with a huge front door was exhibited on the stand of Iso Rivolta, an Italian manufacturer of refrigerators and mini-cars. The BMW delegation bought the license rights to this machine, baptized Iso Isetta, as well as the production facilities.

At first, BMW had to "refine" the engine and the chassis of the small Italian racing car, as Axel Klinger-Köhnlein puts it. After being modified by the BMW developers, used to high performance, the technique of the Isetta remained modest: the four-stroke engine of the R25 motorcycle, a 250 cc single-cylinder, improved to be more regular, provided exactly 12 CV to the BMW Isetta 250 at the start of production in 1955.

When it came to christening the small car, BMW was inspired by its Italian roots. Isetta is Iso's traditional nickname. On the other hand, while the original version only had three wheels, the German Isetta will have four. In 1956, the Bavarian manufacturer launched the BMW Isetta 300 with a displacement of 300 cc and 13 HP under the hood. In its more powerful version as in the other, the small racing car will manage to perform peaks at 85 km / h.

For this new creation, BMW marketing managers coined the term “Motocoupé”. The public was not long in finding a nickname for the little Isetta, baptized “yogurt pot”. Over short distances and in the city, this everyday heroine was unrivaled when it came to weaving through traffic. With a length of only 2.28 meters and a featherweight of 350 kilograms, it was more agile and flexible than any other vehicle. The two adult passengers sat side by side, like in a real car – something that no other micro car was able to offer.

The front door opening in front, similar to that of a refrigerator, made it easy to sit in the passenger compartment. The steering wheel and the steering column then took the tangent with the door. Only the luggage had to stay outside, on a rack attached to the rear hatch. The public understood it well: the Isetta was not a limousine that had shrunk in the wash, but an unprecedented car, which arrived on the market at the right time. The "micromobile" of the 1950s thus marked its era.

The school, which opened in 1990 as the first building by architect Makoto Sei Watanabe 渡辺誠, was designed to house the Shibuya campus of a trade school.

The architect himself describes his work as following: “The Aoyama Technical College building is also intended to restore the fundamental strength that buildings ought to have. Ancient structures, from the Pyramids to the great cathedrals, possessed the awesome power of large spaces. Most of modern architecture, it seems to me, has lost this basic power. Architecture ought to be something capable of moving people’s hearts and giving them a physical thrill in a way possible in no other art. That power deserves to be restored. Another purpose of this building is to assure that anyone who might see it experiences, both mentally and physically, an definitive feeling of excitement.

Moving forward, while facing backwards, like rowing a boat down a stream. Unable to see the future, but capable of examining the past. All that one can hope for is the best. Ready to move forward, blindly; but, through an optimist's perspective.

"That was a beautiful moment that so many elders never thought they’d live to see. So there are things that we don’t yet know, that we don’t think we’re going to live to see, that are also going to give us power and beauty if we hold up our own.

We rightly think that the virtue of courage requires a certain psychological flexibility. A courageous person must know how to act well in all sorts of circumstances. We recognize that there can be times in life when the stock images of courage will be inappropriate, and the truly courageous person will recognize this extraordinary situation and act in an unusual yet courageous way.

If we think of the virtues, or human excellences, as they are actually taught by cultures across history, it is plausible to expect that the virtuous person will be ready to tackle the wide variety of challenges that life might throw his way. It is unclear that there is anything in such training that will prepare him for the breakdown of the form of life itself. We would like our ethics to be grounded in psychological reality. Thus whatever flexibility is required of a virtuous person, it ought to be something that can be inculcated in the education and training of a culture. But a culture does not tend to train the young to endure its own breakdown — and it is fairly easy to see why. A culture embodies a sense of life’s possibilities, and it tries to instill that sense in the young. An outstanding young member of the culture will learn to face these possibilities well.

The inability to conceive of its own devastation will tend to be the blind spot of any culture… A culture tends to propagate itself, and it will do that by instilling its own sense of possibility in the young.

For what may we hope? Kant put this question in the first-person singular along with two others — What can I know? and What ought I to do? — that he thought essentially marked the human condition. With two centuries of philosophical reflection, it seems that these questions are best transposed to the first-person plural. And with that same hindsight: rather than attempt an a priori inquiry, I would like to consider hope as it might arise at one of the limits of human existence… What makes this hope radical is that it is directed toward a future goodness that transcends the current ability to understand what it is. Radical hope anticipates a good for which those who have the hope as yet lack the appropriate concepts with which to understand it. What would it be for such hope to be justified?"

Age-related memory loss.

The brain is capable of producing new brain cells at any age, so significant memory loss is not an inevitable result of aging. But just as it is with muscle strength, you have to use it or lose it. Your lifestyle, habits, and daily activities have a huge impact on the health of your brain. Whatever your age, there are many ways you can improve your cognitive skills, prevent memory loss, and protect your grey matter.

Furthermore, many mental abilities are largely unaffected by normal aging, such as:

Your ability to do the things you’ve always done and continue to do often

The wisdom and knowledge you’ve acquired from life experience

Your innate common sense and your ability to form reasonable arguments and judgments.

Two of the Nijo-jo Castle's four watchtowers were destroyed by fire in 1788, only the southeast and southwestern towers remain.

The castle itself was completed in 1603 on the orders of Ieyasu Tokugawa, the first Shogun and recognised unifer of the islands.

The Ricoh is a VERY capable camera but the screen is hard to see in some conditions as well as the aperture being easy to alter without knowing it...

This girl in a glass house is putting finishing touches on the bombardier nose section of a B-17F navy bomber, Long Beach, Calif. She's one of many capable women workers in the Douglas Aircraft Company plant. Better known as the "Flying Fortress," the B-17F is a later model of the B-17 which distinguished itself in action in the South Pacific, over Germany and elsewhere. It is a long range, high altitude heavy bomber, with a crew of seven to nine men, and with armament sufficient to defend itself on daylight missions

The Mayahuel Gunship, also nicknamed 'Sky Dominator' is a tactical and weapons-packed helicopter capable of traveling long distances due to it's tiltrotor system. Inspired by the V22 Osprey and the Apache helicopter, this hybrid was developed to support and coordinate the Tequilatron war effort from above. Its name is derived from the Aztec female goddess of booze. Nuff said.

SURAMADU BRIDGE

Modern suspension bridge capable of carrying the vehicle using two towers replacing the principal. The cable bridge hanging need tethered firmly on both sides of the bridge, since most of the load on the bridge will be borne by the tension in these main cables. As the course is connected to the main cable using other network cables strung straightened. Bridges like this only suitable for long distances, or do not allow founded pole holder for swift and dangerous currents. Bridges like this is always a nice sight. This bridge is not suitable for use by rail because it will sag caused by the weight of the train.

This was just seconds before we experienced the Corona, the moment Aurora addicts live for ... the nirvana-like instant when an active curtain of Northern Lights passes directly overhead, and the mind is overwhelmed by a shower of intricately detailed, psychedilically colored, speedily spiralling rays of light.

Although some have definitely been able to record the moment much better than I have in these, I really don't think any photography is capable of adequately capturing this incredible moment ..

There is nothing else like it ...
