Everything has a purpose. Everything has a beauty.

One of the many pumping station outflows on Canvey Island, Essex. "Keeping the residents' feet dry since 1953".

The aftermath of a deliberate grass fire started by idiots (ref my post second behind this one), leaving devastation in its wake…

I had to be out this way this evening and thought I might just catch the sun starting to sink into the west over the Thames Estuary. Oh, those tones...!

Pretty much SooC exposure with just a raw file development in Affinity Photo.

It's hard for me to believe sometimes but it's only been a little over 4 years that we've been living on the Eastern side of Corringham next to the Fobbing Marshes. Freddie pretty much marked them as his own from day one regardless of the incumbent rabbits, pheasants, foxes and cows opinions on the matter. Here we are this Sunday morning on a routine tour of inspection. All in order Fred? Good, come on I'm hungry.

Fobbing, Essex UK. I pinned this on the Flickr map if anybody is interested. It's not 100% accurate but close enough.

A receding tide...

*********************************

A couple of friends have thought this is a Monochrome, although it wasn’t shot or processed as such. It’s SooC. But I found desaturating it in an editor makes no discernible difference, so it’s “nature’s monochrome”!

Just after sunrise.

An early mist comes to the hills above Corringham signalling a return to warm, sunny weather. But before that I have obligations. I hope I have met them adequately. (If you know, you know)...

Common Inkcap mushroom which by my guess is going to blow black liquid very soon. Deliquescence of course...what a wonderful word for which I must thank wheres_bruce for bringing to my attention.

************************************

Absolutely not a purist's macro, a 70-200 lens I had on to capture er...something else. No creative lighting and just about SooC*.

(*Tamed the green a bit and cut a 7:5 crop to set the mushroom off centre)

A collective noun I just invented. Usually they will fly away, far away, at the sight of me with a camera. The dog isn’t to be blamed either. Here they performed a fly past, almost ceremonial…

This not a migration, merely a relocation. Here they flew overhead, just low enough so even a 200mm lens could capture them. How wonderful, how cooperative!

From Deadman’s Cove (more cheerfully known now as Thorney Bay). But why so named? Well, according to a longtime resident it’s because if you got into difficulty upriver this is where they were (and are) going to find you. Logical enough and a warning to play safe in tidal waters.

Monochrome today because it was bleak and beautiful.

Golden Slumbers

Living along the Thames Estuary I'm practically surrounded by reedbeds so I simply must photograph them from time to time. And here in the early morning sun I saw this scene. It's practically sepia. Not from any manipulation by my hands though, just the sun filtered through the reeds. All I did was drop the raw file into Affinity Photo, made the smallest uplift to the shadow and hit "develop". Enjoy it with me...

"Canvey Boys". Or girls for that matter. Distinguishing them is a matter of proportion. The attitude is the same, especially around here. Some of the litter bins had been ransacked early this morning and the finger of suspicion points in their direction...

Along the Mardyke in South Essex, the lazy little river I occasionally spend time with. Here taking us further to the north but inevitably the time comes to turn and head back. Following all 11 miles of its course seems a very pleasant way to spend a day but there’s no hurry. You’d miss too much…

Wet, grey and windy. Just the way we like it.*

*OK, that’s not strictly true but you do have to grab the opportunities when they arise…

Make a wish…

Golden Hour? Well, just! Sunrise was 07:35 am today. This shot was taken at 08:31 am Leigh-on-Sea, Essex UK

Challenging light. No filters, 3 exposure HDR set in camera at +/-3EV. Just lifted foreground shadow a touch otherwise SOOC.

Spring returns to the Fobbing Marshes. So do we. Not that we've been away much. But if recent walks in sub-zero temperatures and fog were a test of endurance we now look forward to joyous (and wet) walks in temperatures trending upwards. And with the water courses flowing things are stirring and splashing so they need investigating. I'll leave that to Freddie. "Form and Function" as my very knowledgeable Flickr friend wheres_bruce calls it. I'm just hoping my waterproof boots are as good as advertised...

Spring has come to the Fobbing Marsh along the Thames Estuary. This means hares, rabbits, cows, egrets, geese, the occasional swan and.....wet feet. Never mind...

Another early morning, another method. This time the long lens at f/5. The low sunlight in front and back gives me further glimpses of the carpet of bluebells stretching into the distance. By 9:00 am it's all over. The light goes "flat" or (as today) the sky clouds over.

The sun rises in the East. Everybody knows this. Whether it remains visible all day is another matter. But things are getting brighter day by day. 10 minutes prior to taking this shot the low sun was blinding me, then the clouds moved in. But I sense great days are coming. Hints and promises...

From Wikipedia: Arctium is a genus of biennial plants commonly known as burdock, family Asteraceae. Native to Europe and Asia, several species have been widely introduced worldwide. Burdock's clinging properties, in addition to providing an excellent mechanism for seed dispersal, led to the invention of the hook and loop fastener. (That's Velcro to you and me!)

Arctium species generally flower from July through October. Burdock flowers provide essential pollen and nectar for honeybees around August, when clover is on the wane and before the goldenrod starts to bloom.

*** So as these have yet to turn into their summer green a monochrome treatment seemed appropriate. ***

Farmland as seen from Langdon Hills, facing more or less due west as the land rolls down to the fenland of Bulphan and Ockendon then on towards Greater London. Back at the top of the hill and on a clear day you can see the skyscrapers of the City, but today you’ll have to take my word for that. I’d rather be here anyway.

So how to rescue a greenish tinge from grasses surrounding a lake and reflected from the water itself? Monochrome...!

This cygnet had just swum over to me with Mum & Dad. Completely chilled, ever curious.

....that I can't quite put my finger on. Topographically, historically or culturally two neighbouring counties in the east of England can't be that different. Except when you travel through you notice the difference. They seem to have kept more of this. And I think this is why I like it so much.
