You've heard of shotgun weddings, right? So what's up with this, though? A wedding chapel and a cannon?!!!
Actually, the cannon and this world-famous wedding chapel at the Top of the Rock Ozarks Heritage Preserve really don't have anything to do with each other... after all, wouldn't a cannon be overkill (pun intended) for a shotgun wedding? The cannon is kept in working condition and a color guard shoots it at sunset each evening to herald the end to another day while someone plays bagpipes in the mountaintop outlook (which overlooks the chapel). The back of the chapel is largely glass and provides a spectacular view of the rolling hills and beautiful lake. At this time of the year, the sun was setting behind the chapel... which made for some dramatic photos.

From the cannon position at Vara, Kristiansand. The coastal artillery fortress was named Batterie Vara (MAB 6./502 Vara) by the Germans, when it was built by the German Wehrmacht during World War II. It was named after Major General Felix Vara, who was killed off Alderney in the English channel on 3 November 1941. After the war, the Norwegian Armed Forces named it Møvik Fort.

Composed of basalt, the "needles" adjacent to Haystack Rock were formed by lava flows emanating from the Grand Ronde Mountains 10 to 17 million years ago. The lava flows created many of the Oregon coast's natural features, including Tillamook Head, Arch Cape, and Saddle Mountain.

View of Cannon Beach looking south from Ecola State Park. This view might look familiar since it was one of the shooting locations for the Goonies.
This was a very tricky image to exposure correctly, as the ambient light was rapidly disappearing, whilst the bright light from the Ship Inn was becoming increasingly intense. I think that the wonders of better camera sensors and post-processing enabled me to make an image that would have been impossible 20 years ago
Bravo Lightroom for improving the output shape of a panorama image!! I merged 6 shots here expecting to see a distorted image that I would need to stretch and straighten in PS but this is what came out! Hurray LR, you just made my day!!! AND these were handheld so everything was aligned by LR just perfectly!

Before our 2022 visit I was warned that the Oregan coast could be wet and windy. Well, that wasn’t how we found it. Not only was the weather delightful, there was a good deal of birdlife to be found and the beach was almost empty.
Photographed on the only clear/almost sunny evening during a visit to Cannon Beach, Oregon.

Dopo le grandi nevicate di dicembre il caldo e la pioggia hanno parzialmente rovinato le piste di sci. Per fortuna pacifici cannoni ci provano a ripristinare la situazione.
