Colors, flavors, textures, and eye-catching packaging (in some cases broadcast and online advertising, too) have come a long way from the time that sugar was considered a form of therapy, something dispensed by medical or pharmacy people a few hundred years ago. With the extraction of sucrose from the sugar beet, the use of cane sugar is largely eclipsed. Additive sweetener by both cane and beet sugar is far surpassed in volume and diversity by HFCS, high fructose corn syrup these days, though. About 2/3 of this side of the aisle at the supermarket is occupied by candy. A time-lapse movie would show how much (or little) these edibles go into shopping carts. Alternatively, the data scanned at the checkout machine also tracks the ebb and flow of purchase by product or category of product. One way or another, visually (time-lapse) or with data, it would be interesting to know the movement patterns for these items, once a rare thing but now in some households a staple, like bread, eggs, or milk.

"Sweetness and Power: The Place of Sugar in Modern History" by Sidney Mintz (1986) was an early example of taking a single piece of modern life and using to tell a wide-ranging story. Later author have titles like "Salt" or "Coffee" or "A History of the World in Six Glasses."

Gale’s Root Beer (made with pure cane sugar, not HFCS, btw) plus a splash of good Guyanan rum - an afternoon treat after a working morning.

"Leninade is a progressive soda pop that truly captures the spirit of our Revolution! It's Red, it's Bubbly, and it goes well with Vodka! Let's all get Hammered and Sickled! Our 5-Year Plan: Drink a bottle a day and become a Hero of Socialist Flavour! Change your soda pop - drink Leninade!"

Barack Obama, Chairman of People's Soviet of North American Progressive Republics

Progressives of all countries, unite!

Surveys have shown that 3 out of 4 Occupiers of Wall Street prefer Leninade over Mountain Dew and other soda pops manufactured by the military-industrial complex. It is truly a taste worth standing in line for.

It is a refreshing carbonated citrus drink with an appeal to the Progressive masses. The taste that would make Pelosi, Lenin, Marx, and Engels proud is sure to be a hit with anyone who likes to Party. Socialists, Communists and Progressives rejoice! The proletariat are back with a new agenda: "Drink a bottle a day and become a Hero of Socialist Flavour!" drink Comrade! drink! it's this or the FEMA Gulag!

Leninade is a soda based on lemonade made by Real Soda In Real Bottles, Ltd. The name is a portmanteau of "Lenin" and "lemonade." The slogans on the bottle make fun of old Soviet propaganda slogans. In addition, the soda is colored bright red, the traditional color of Communism.

This chewy energy bar is packed with oats, Rice Krispy, almond, hazelnut, coconut, and cocoa nib. The flavour is bold with the use of ground espresso, dutched cocoa powder, and vanilla. The Coco Mocha Power Bar is an everyday snack that keeps my energy level high with good dose of protein and fibre.

There´s a rumor at work that no one takes his coffee more serious than me.

I doubt that.

I am serious about the fuel that gets me going, but there are several more nutcases who love coffee, for sure.

It is strange that I find this at the Fresh & Easy store. This is an import from Mexico, where they still use real cane sugar to make Coke. Makes one wonders why we don't here in the US and uses the high fructose corn syrup when people wants to buy the alternative from another country...
