INGREDIENTS
1 box Pillsbury® refrigerated pie crusts, softened as directed on box
1 EGGLAND’S BEST egg
1 tablespoon water
1 tablespoon sea salt
1/3 cup packed dark or light brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground red pepper (cayenne)
20 thin slices center-cut bacon (about 12 oz)
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon granulated sugar
1 tablespoon lemon juice
2 small Granny Smith apples
4 oz cream cheese (half of 8-oz package), softened
1 1/4 cups crumbled blue cheese (6 oz)
DIRECTIONS
1. Heat oven to 400°F. Line large cookie sheets with cooking parchment paper. Unroll pie crusts on work surface. Using 2 1/4-inch round cookie cutter, cut 20 rounds from each crust, rerolling dough if necessary. Place on cookie sheet; prick each round twice with fork. In small bowl, beat egg and 1 tablespoon water until well blended; brush on rounds. Sprinkle with sea salt. Bake 7 to 10 minutes or until golden brown and crisp. Cool while preparing bacon.
2. Line 15x10x1-inch pan with cooking parchment paper. In small bowl, mix brown sugar and red pepper. Place bacon with sides touching in pan; sprinkle with brown sugar mixture. Bake 10 to 15 minutes or until sugar is hot and bubbly. Remove bacon from pan to a plate; let stand 10 to 15 minutes or until cool enough to handle. Using sharp knife, cut each bacon slice into 4 pieces.
3. Meanwhile, in small bowl, mix 1/2 cup water, granulated sugar and lemon juice until sugar is dissolved. Cut each unpeeled apple into 20 (2x1/4-inch) slices; place in water mixture and refrigerate.
4. In another small bowl, mix cream cheese and blue cheese with wooden spoon, leaving small pieces of blue cheese visible. Spoon mixture into pastry bag fitted with 3/4-inch tip; pipe onto each cracker. Drain apple slices; pat dry. For each cracker, place 1 apple slice between 2 bacon pieces; press at an angle into cheese mixture.
Oh my god. Perhaps our favorite of the night. Not just sweet, also savory/grilled and salty bacon and tomato jam, which they didn't even mention!

Trying out foods at home that remind me of the Iowa State Fair. This is Candied Bacon. We sprinkled brown sugar on the uncooked bacon and then put on a drip pan / rack. We cooked this at 375 degrees and turned it halfway through. Near the end of cooking, we increased the temperature to 400 to crisp the bacon. Was really delicious!

Darek & I spent another day in Michigan. We had breakfast at Bob Evan's, which is just down the street from our hotel. Darek has fallen in love with their candied bacon.
We candied bacon and fell in love with it. We HAD to include it in a recipe.

Made a batch of candied bacon this afternoon, destined (along with some glazed pecans) as a mix-in for a batch of maple-bourbon ice cream (well, other than the piece I ate. To… um… check that it came out OK. Yeah, that’s it.) I shot some quick before and after photos, not really taking the time to set things up very well, but when I saw that I had framed the befores and the afters similarly, I thought to assemble them into this diptych.
(Yeah, yeah, diptychs were traditionally, or at least frequently, religious iconography. I'm pretty sure that there’s a group of people out there for whom pictures of bacon qualifies.)
In any case, candied bacon is pretty straightforwad to make. I laid out 10 strips of relatively thick-cut supermarket bacon, combined 1/2 c. of light brown sugar with 1/4 c. of maple sugar, sprinkled the sugars onto the bacon, and baked at 350°F for about 25 minutes, long enough for the fat to mostly render out of the bacon and the sugars to melt down and coat the crispy, salty goodness that results from fat rendering out of cured, smoked pork.
(If you have a Silpat or parchment paper, use it. This stuff gets sticky.)
You know that society's love of bacon has gone too far when someone makes a candied bacon cream soda, but that is exactly what the Cicero Beverage Company of Chicago did. (Now, I do like how they took this pic on the label of the Chicago river and colored the water to be bacon color.)
I never tried this, but instead I gave it to someone who likes bacon more than I do. I should have asked him what it was like, but I forgot. Based on other internet reviews I have seen, I am probably better off for having never tried it.

I took this "under cover" at a bakery, just to show you guys that Bacon has struck again, I did not buy any, I bought the Coconut Curry, which was interesting and then I went back and bought one Vanilla and one Caramel-that's the one on the left-on the right is Herbes de Provence.
I threw those snowflakes in because the shelf looked so bare in front on the Candied (!) Bacon Shortbread, obviously somebody has bought one

This is why I hardly ever buy bacon at the market. If I know we have some, it's the only thing I want to eat. I even made nachos with it the other night.
I made this cupcake as a special request from my son David. It has all his very favorite things, Banana Cupcake with Peanut Butter Cream Cheese Frosting topped with Candied Bacon. I am told it is really called The Elvis Cupcake as it contains all of Elvis's favorite things. Apparently Elvis liked a deep fried sandwich made of bananas, peanut butter and bacon. Me and my husband are not sure we are even going to try this one, if we can get past the bacon we are not sure we can deal with the peanut butter frosting.

Cheeseburger Cake, Sugar Cookie Fries, and Candied Bacon Buckets with a picnic theme done for my son's 11th birthday. Cheeseburger cake consists of yellow cake "bun" for the top and bottom tiers, fudge brownie "hamburger patty" for the middle tier, buttercream "catsup" and "mustard" between the tiers, fondant "cheese" slices and royal icing bacon pieces peeking out between the top and middle tiers, as well as sugar icing emojis on the cake board. "French fries" are made of sugar cookies served with buttercream "catsup". Candied bacon was the perfect companion for this faux food dessert meal, and was served in buckets custom designed to match the picnic theme. How do you know when you've properly completed your customer's request?....He gives you two thumbs up!!!
