For all my FFF (Female Flickr Friends) out there - REMEMBER if you are over 40 you need to talk to your Doctor about Mammography to screen for breast cancer. Detecting cancer early saves lives. Don't be afraid! The new Digital Tomographic Mammography like we have on our mobile van is a much more comfortable exam (less squeezing) and more accurate.

Our 2 mobile vans at the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center screen over 7,000 poor/uninsured women each year in rural Louisiana for free. The mammograms are sponsored by the Susan Komen Foundation, ACS, CDC and private donors. We have over 45 places in north and central Louisiana we go to so that the women can easily obtain their cancer screening (both mammograms and pap smears)

Referred to as 'Runaway' Roskam because he refuses to hold Town Hall meetings with constituents and ducked out of one gathering when confronted by angry protestors. Prefers instead to have tele townhalls which he says are more productive.

One thing that struck me is how strong that table must be. I think it's about 10 feet long... as you can see, it doesn't even fit in the frame. But it's only supported at the end away from the machine. Plus, I don't think that it can have any metal in it because metal supports would show in the CT scan.

Between all of the injections and blood extractions, the inside of my arm has been pretty well abused this week. I hate the tape that they use, it leaves a mark, and sometimes gives me a mild rash.

Tuesday March 2nd, 2011

Last Friday I went to Lifescan in Edina for a PET Scan. For the PET scan, a serum of radioactive glucose is injected 45 minutes prior to loading me into the machine. The idea is that cancer cells eat a lot more than normal cells, so they show brighter on the scan. I guess that different radioactive tracers can be used depending on what you're looking for, but currently, the most common use is the detection of tumors.

The nurse warned me that I should avoid small children for the rest of the day. I guess that you remain slightly radioactive till the tracer isotopes decay, which takes a day or so. After being injected, I was left to read for 45 minutes in a comfy leather recliner. While scheduling this test, there was a slight delay with insurance approval. The scheduler suggested I wait to make sure that my insurance covers the test because without insurance, it runs $5,000, so I guess they can afford nice comfy chairs.

The actual scan takes about half an hour. You lie down on a big plank that rises up so that you're centered in the detector donut. Then is slides you through for a quick CT scan that is done so that they can super-impose the PET Scan results over CT imagery of you in the same position. For the PET phase of scanning, the plan moves a little bit and then pauses for about 3 minutes. There was a radio tuned to some top-40 station. I would have preferred NPR, but I didn't think to ask anyone to change it before they started scanning.

Fun fact from wikipedia, a PET scan exposes you to about as much ionizing radiation as you would absorb in a decade from background sources.

Today while I was at the grocery store, my Oncologist Dr Thurmes called to let me know that he had the results for the marrow biopsy and the PET scan, and both are clear. So I'll be meeting him on Friday to talk over things and schedule chemo.

In a new study from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, researchers found a higher than expected prevalence of cancer at baseline screening in individuals with Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS), a rare inherited disorder that leads to a higher risk of developing certain cancers. The research demonstrates the feasibility of a new, comprehensive cancer screening protocol for this high-risk population.

This image is part of a representative image of a whole body MRI of an LFS patient. Arrow denotes lesion found to be lung adenocarcinoma.

The metal shield is to protect the nurse from exposure. Since she handles these injections every day, the accumulated exposure can be quite bad.

It's important. It's important for ALL of us.

There is a dense mass in the left boob they are concerned with as they can't tell if it is simply fatty tissue or something else. After 5 scans (original mammogram + 4 more xrays today), they have scheduled me for an ultrasound to dig in a little deeper.

Not sweating it until I know for sure what I am dealing with. Of course, hoping for it to be nothing, but keeping a positive mind is muy importante no matter what.

Tuesday, January 13th - Went in for another mammogram as my original scan turned up some 'oddities' (see next photo). They had to compress the boob so hard, this time it actually hurt. And they had to do it four times as they still could not get a clear picture.

I now go in for an ultrasound this Friday.

Staff from Management University of Africa (MUA) embraced the "think pink" theme, at the Cancer Awareness event organised by their students for the local (predominantly Muslim) community. Healthcare professionals gave talks on a variety of topics to those waiting in line for their free cancer screening.

Breast Cancer Awareness Pink Tree Lighting 2012

In honor of a family member we lost to breast cancer Theresa Irene Wolowski and Ryan Janek Wolowski, first lit this Kanzan tree in pink lights as a tribute to Maura Wolowski on 11-14-2010.

The theme of the first lighting in 2010 was breast cancer awareness.

After the tree was lit with pink mini holiday lights we said a prayer for Maura Wolowski and her surviving family members. She is still very much loved and not forgotten.

Please encourage the ones you love to have a screening for breast cancer.

During the holiday season we often gather and see family members. We are hoping this pink tree will make it easier and more likely that folks with be able to talk about breast cancer with their family members as well as their doctors.

for example..Hey did you hear Aunt Theresa did a pink tree on her front lawn? Really why? She made a

breast cancer awareness tree, instantly the whole room had an easy way to start talking about cancer, without it being a total downer and with early detection being your friend, we encourage everyone to get involved.

This tree is planted on Long Island New York where the cancer rate is very high.

The 2011 lighting took place on 11-12-2011 and was attended by Rich Wolowski, Theresa Irene Wolowski, Ryan Janek Wolowski, Girish Bhasin and John Erario. This years dedication was that of Cancer Recovery and we dedicated this to both Judy Wolowski and friend of the family Dorthy Phister who both were recently diagnosed with cancer. And with this early detection we are wishing them both a speedy recovery.

Talk about this with your loved ones and make sure to get checked regularly.

The theme of the second lighting in 2011 was cancer recovery

The lighting of 2012 took place on December 1st 2012, the tree was lit again to honor Maura Wolowski, Updates for Judy Wolowski, Theresa Irene Wolowski, Dotty Phister, Terry Vlahos, and to all wishing and working to live cancer free in wellness.

The theme of the third lighting in 2012 was wellness after cancer.
