House in the hamlet of Vo' Giorgi, just outside Pegognaga, Lombardy, Italy. Despite its old charm, the house is actually dated to 1932 (if the text on the side of the house is to be believed - the name written on the house is that of the village, though partly obscured).

Alcune lapidi ricordano l'evento.

The Porta all'Arco was part of the ancient Etruscan walls of Volterra. Built between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, it has come down to us in all its grandeur. The peculiarity of the construction lies in the use of stones, which are characterized by the three different colors based on the type of rock used: yellow for the supporting structure, gray for the arch and darker for the three mysterious heads. These figures are what has always made the door fascinating: in fact, there are many legends and attributions concerning them.

Its history, which has seen it the scene of disparate clashes, certainly contributes to giving it that magical aura that has spanned the centuries. A siege scene is already represented in an urn from the 1st century BC, which we can see today at the Guarnacci Etruscan Museum.

But the gate was seen in danger even during World War II. Hearing the imminent arrival of the allies, German troops threatened to blow it up. The inhabitants of the place, although aware that with their gesture they would have delayed the liberation of the city, in one night they completely walled it up using the pavement and, with this courageous action, saved it. Some tombstones commemorate the event.

Built circa 1380 this belfry was the entrance to the town, as part of the fortifications.

A dramatic sky and the golden gates to Kensington Palace, London.

Kensington Palace is one of the royal residences - originally built in 1605 by Sir George Coppin in what was then the village of Kensington (London has grown a lot since then). It was then in Jacobean style. It became a royal residence in 1689 when it was bought by William and Mary (as more healthy place to stay than Whitehall - William had asthma), and was remodelled by Sir Christopher Wren, who added to the place rather than replaced, to save money.

Today it is the official London residence for prince William and his family (they have a 20 room apartment there), but also that of prince Harry (who has one bedroom there) and a few others. The state rooms are open to the public.

The medieval fortification in Caen, here seen towards the Porte des Champs. The castle was started by William the Conqueror around 1060, and his heirs, as dukes of Normandy, continued to improve on it. But when the kings of England lost the duchy of Normandy the castle fell in the hands of the French king.

The keep was destroyed in 1793, in the French revolution. And the building suffered severe damaged in World War II, during the Battle of Caen (June 6-13 1944).

It is not known exactly when the Porte de Champs was built, but there is no mention of an exit at this part of the castle before the 13th century. It is also not known exactly when the barbican (that is the building in front of the gate) was built - if it dates to the 13th century like the gate, or if it was built in the 14th century, when English troops held the castle during parts of the 100 years war.

I seek serenity

Tomorrow after the concert at Parco San Giuliano we hope for a better day. While waiting to repossess a public space seized for three weeks and raped by ignorance and greed, it will be necessary to count the damages and what remains of the luxuriant nature after the subhuman devastation.

The old gate at the bottom of the steps (the steps leads up to a park just outside the Prince Park hotel) is Somon (惣門), built in the early Edo period and once leading to a mausoleum for the second Edo shogun, Tokugawa Hidetada (徳川 秀忠) who died in 1632. The mausoleum itself has not survived.

Bonus for the sharp-eyed: as you can see it has just rained and in the gate a man has taken shelter, fiddling with his phone (Tokyo really is a mixture of history and modernity).

According to the sign on the right wall, the area behind the closed door is an extraterritorial part of the Vatican. The rest of the Vatican can be found just across the street from where I am standing.

This Japanese shrine is Ueno Tōshō-gū, and the golden gate Karamon (唐門) in front of it. Well, a more proper way to call the gate is the Kara gate - mon means gate in itself. And a karamon is, to quote jisho.org: a large gate with a karahafu gable (typically at a temple, shrine or castle). And a karahafu gable is that curved thing over the entrance.

The shrine is dedicated to the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, Ieyasu, founded in 1627, with the main hall (hinted here behind the gate) built in 1651 by the third Tokugawa shogun (and Ieyasu's grandson). It has survived the Battle of Ueno (1868), the Kanto earthquake (1923), and the bombings of the Second World War, and is now an Important Cultural Property of Japan, and is a great example of Edo architecture. The main building is covered with gold foil, and saw massive restoration work 2009-2013. This building is called the Golden Hall (金色殿).

The wall and gate was also built in 1651. The crest at the centre of the gate beam (and on the shrine gable itself), is that of the Tokugawa clan.

Well, at least central Rome. This is the gate out of the Villa Borghese park (a gate that never closes, I hasten to add) towards Piazzale Flaminio and to the left you can see Porta del Popolo - and on the other side of that you will find the grand Piazza del Popolo.
