After fleeing the nest, the young serins also follow their parents for a few days and want to be fed further. The "trick" used is always the same: shout loudly, make yourself small and helplessly flap your wings.
Technical info: the difficulty was to position the AF through a gap in the leaves inside the apple tree on the hectic happenings so that the depth of field covers both birds. I had to increase the shutter speed a lot because of the fast movements and the price for this was an ISO of 6400, which is actually too much for my 7DII.

The Serins are the smallest finches that visit me in my garden every day. But they are the ones that sing the most beautifully.
Comp. info: The picture would be better if the tail feathers were not covered by the beech leaves and the fruit stalks did not make it difficult to see the feet. Tech. Info: I'm probably repeating myself but if you get close enough, the full-frame sensor blows the APS-C sensor out of the water in terms of image impression any time.

Feeding was pretty hectic. The fledgling loudly performed the "I'm so small and hungry" dance, and the parent couldn't escape the show. Within less than a minute the young friend was slipped a treat three or four times. In case you like the feeding scene: 14 frames further down my photo stream there is a second image from this session.

The foul wheather in the last days seems to have its share in the somewhat ruffled appearance of this Serin. It's singing anyway.

Fitness Freaks Bengalureans participating in the Canara Marathon 2025 in Bengaluru.
Among the fitness freaks of Bengaluru, a new concept of 'empty calories' is emerging as something they are wary of.
Empty calories come from foods and drinks high in sugar, unhealthy fats, and refined carbs, providing lots of energy (calories) but very few essential nutrients.

This little guy is a guest in my garden. It drops by several times a day to get to a bird bath that I put up for him. When he visits to take a sip, he stops in the apple tree first. This is where I took this photograph.

The colourful Serin is the smallest finch here. This picture was taken in my garden. It is one of those things you do when you can go nowhere because of a pandemic. I noticed in the last weeks that this male Serin quite often used a particular low branch to check whether it was safe to proceed to the bird feeder. Hence I positioned myself on a chair close to it and waited. Two times it landed in the top of the tree and flew away but on the third time it came down, landed on this branch and stayed there so that I could take some photographs. Distance was less than 13 feet. Side effect: holding the camera with tele lens for 45 minutes at about the ready saves you from going to the gym. Don't let anybody tell you photography ain't no sport...

The Canara Marathon 2025 was flagged off on November 23, 2025, at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru, by Canara Bank's MD and CEO, K. Satyanarayana Raju, and former India cricketer Venkatesh Prasad.
This was taken at our ancestral farm (or 'Thota' as they call in Kannada) in Sirsi last year. Just below the ferns that you see in the foreground, a beautiful stream flows through our farm. This is my husband's grandmothers farm ....one of my favourite places and a 'must visit' place whenever I travel to Sirsi .

Bengaluru is often called the "fitness capital of India", known for its residents' enthusiasm for a healthy lifestyle.
This photograph of a male serin was taken while it was sitting on a rather low perch checking the surroundings for potential threats. In this very moment it seems to think about whether that guy with the camera would be dangerous to him. Being approximately 15 feet apart seemed to be OK though. Usually serins prefer sitting in the very top of a tree where it is almost impossible to get a nice picture of them.
It's hard to tell without a size comparison, but this little guy is about only half the size of a sparrow. It did me the favor of sitting on a nice branch in the apple tree.

The female serin noticed that I was photographing it. As it sits on the buddleia it seems to think about whether the attention could be dangerous for it. Luckily for me it decided the distance wasn't a problem (apparently I was still outside the escape radius) and so I was able to snap a small series of images from which I chose this shot for my photostream.

I spent about 4 hours in the crowded tent filled with artists of Yakshagana, some busy applying foundations over foundations of make up to prepare themselves for the role while others were having sound sleep, till their turn arrived to be on stage
The tent was lit by tube lights, not the most beautiful light from photographers point of view, which also meant careful control on white balance and shutter speed to keep things in check and to prevent "I-will-fix-it-later" scenarios
Its rather amusing to watch artists carefully apply make up with close to no errors what-so-ever. Their hands were trained to do the job with ease, each stroke of absolute perfection. Each artist is allotted a slot or two per show and they dress up as per the character assigned to them, usually hours before hitting the stage
They do memorize their scripts, often spoken in purest form of kannada and with experience they also try their luck on ad-libbing a line or two, most often considered as competitive proficiency while debating the co-actor on stage
In Yakshagana the men portray both male and female characters. The full ensemble consists of a minimum of 15 to as many as 30 or more, which include the musicians, the actors and the narrators
Complete story and more BTS on my blog soon

The Mangaladevi Temple is situated in the city limits of Mangalrore (Mangaluru) Distirct in the Karnataka State of India. The temple is dedicated to Hindu mother Goddess Sakthi in the form of Mangaladevi and is built in Kerala style architecture with most of its structure made of wood. The place got its name from the presiding deity.
The temple is believed to have been built by Parasurama, one of the ten avatars of Hindu God Vishnu and later expanded during the 9th Century by Kundavarman, the most famous king of the Alupa dynasty. This royal dynasty ruled coastal Karnataka from 4th to 15th Century with Mangalore as its capital.
The region is also called Tulu Nadu, the Tulu-speaking region spread over parts of present Indian States of Karnataka and Kerala. This also forms the erstwhile South Canara (Dakshin Kannada) region and it consists of Kundapura, Udupi, Karkala, Mangalore, Belthangady and Puthur Districts in Karnataka and Kasargod District of Kerala.
WHEN WE VISITED IN MARCH 2014 IT WAS ANNUAL FESTIVAL TIME FOR THE TEMPLE. SO MUCH OF FRUITS TIED AT THE BASE OF THE FLAG MAST CAUGHT MY EYES AS I HAVE NEVER SEEN LIKE THIS BEFORE.

The first Gran Canaria lizard popping up at my feet scared the living heck out of me: that creature was gigantic!! No time to take a photo, but… the next day it was great fun to lure them with bits of banana… (which you can even see on the foreground of the photo.)
The Gran Canaria giant lizard is the largest species of the genus Gallotia, the members which are found on the Canary Islands only. It grows to lengths up to 80 cm! The lizard is protected by international legislation.

Not a migrant visitor to Norfolk, but taken on an ill fated trip to Gran Canaria. Booked to try and cheer ourselves up after the passing of our much loved, long lived and very pampered Maine Coon cat Enzo.
We are both double vacinated and have recently had our boosters - so (possibly naively) thought we were unlikely to pass C19 on to anyone - or catch it. At the time of booking the trip the only Covid restriction was a traceable Lateral Flow test on day 2 after your return. On the day we arrived in Gran Canaria the rules changed to require a treaceable PCR test on return and then changed again to require a Lateral Flow before you can even leave for the UK - in force from 7th December 4am onwards.
We decided that the thought of spending Christmas in a Spanish quarantine hotel - should we manage to catch C19 Omicron from a passing jogger - was too much of a worry (you do go on holiday to relax after all!). So bought more flights on the last flight out of Dodge, returning to cold and rainy Norfolk 5 days early.
At least I had a couple of hours on Sunday photographing the Canaries and ChiffChaff's in Jardim Anfi Del Mar near the beach. It appeared to be a disused Pitch and Put course (probably a Covid casualty) but had lots of endemic plants and fresh water, so had a few birds too.
It was the first time we have left the UK for 2 years - and sadly I can't see us trying to do it again any time soon.
Clicked from a restaurant (Taj Mahal) near Mangalore railway station where we had dosa while returning from pilgrimage to Southern Karnataka (Dakshin Kannada). Dosa was really tasty with minimum oil.
After ordering food I was just looking around when a clock of different type (I have not seen this before) caught my eyes.
Temple dedicated to Vidyashankara, the 10th Guru of Sree Sharada Peetham, Sringeri, considered to be one of the greatest Gurus of the Peetham till then.
Built in 1338 by Vidyaranya, the 12th Guru, with the aid of rulers of Vijayanagara Empire.
Built entirely of stone, combining both Hoysala (Chalukya) and Dravidian architectural features.
There are six doorways leading to the temple. Eastern half of the structure is a mandapa (hall) with 12 pillars marked by 12 signs of the zodiac in their regular order, and arranged in such a manner that the rays of the sun fall on each of them in the order of the twelve solar months. Column of the pillars has a large rearing lion, with non removable rolling stone balls in its mouth. On the floor is a large circle, marked with converging lines to indicate the direction of the shadows. The central ceiling has lotus and pecking parrots excellently carved on it.
Temple also features 61 images of various scenes from the puranas.
From across the river, this temple looks seated like a majestic swan.
REPOST .. original title "Where am I?"
Below is the story that accompanied this photo about the Haitian orphans who were fast-tracked for adoption by Canadian families in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake that devastated the island of Haiti exactly 5 years ago today. Hopefully Dania & all the Haitian adoptees are now fully acclimatized, happy thriving new Canadians loved & cared for by their families & doing well in school.
But what of the children in today's Haiti? We can't imagine they are so fortunate. Haiti is still the poorest nation in the western hemisphere. Over 200,000 haitians, these 5 years later, are still living in a hillside shanty town of tents, tar-paper shacks & corrugated lean-to's, a camp for the disenfranchised (officially named 'city of Canara') on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince with only sporadic electricity, no running water, no sanitation, no health-care, no security & no available education for the children. Residents of this desperate slum claim they have never seen a single penny in aid. What happened to the 16 billion dollars pledged to Haiti in international aid? Below Canara's hillside, clearly visible to its sorry inhabitants, young & old, is a newly built sports stadium, including sports fields & tracks. Also visible are the buses that transport the children of affluent Haitians, & those of resident foreign investors, into the sports complex daily. The children of 'the City of Canara' are not allowed access. Something rotten in Haiti's denmark?
In downtown Port-au-Prince, the Martelly regime has aggressively (reports say 'violently') evicted the poor from their homes, no time to pack anything, instant demolition, minimum compensation to owners that can prove title [only 17 so far!], no compensation to renters or multiple families sharing one home. Why? To expand Port-au-Prince's new corporate-driven upscale commercial zone, including super-elite hotels for rich tourists & investors. In the meantime, Martelly flaunts his vast wealth & Bill Clinton (overseer of the billions in Haitian aid) claims his 'Lifetime Achievement Award' in an ostentatious ceremony in Manhattan.

Where am I? ( original post January 27th / 2010 )
24 Haitian children arrived in Canada 2 days ago. The first of 150 orphans, all whose adoptions by Canadian couples will soon be finalised. It has been determined that no new adoption applications for Haitian orphans will be accepted, from any country, in
the immediate aftermath of the catastrophe. This to thwart both impulsive decisions to adopt made by those caught in the throes of compassionate response to the present situation & those who would unscrupulously adopt children only to sell them abroad on the black market. Seems a wise & necessary decision. Intervention by Canada's federal government, however, has fast-tracked the 150 children already in process for Canadian adoption prior to the quake. And so, the first 24 children, either carried or walking & all wrapped in red blankets, descended the steps of an airplane at Ottawa airport. It was early in the morning, still dark, the temperature well below 0* They met their new parents in a room inside the airport. In the newspaper the next day, there was a photo of 5 year old Dania staring expressionless into the camera, her ecstatic new parents, who had waited 3 years for her, in the background. They were in Dania's new very pink bedroom. There's a white lace canopy over the bed, plush cushions, frills galore, stuffed animals, shelves of books & toys. Dania herself is wearing a beautiful new dress. It gave pause for thought. These children have lived, possibly all of their young lives, in a crowded bare-bones orphanage, with nothing but the absolute basics of life, if that, in a country ravaged by abject poverty, illiteracy & violence long before the quake destroyed the physical world around them. Yes, in the longterm, adoption by loving parents in a land of plenty will be a gift beyond measure. But what an extrordinary & surely traumatic transition they are making, and in the space of a 4 hour journey in a massive flying machine. From heat to freezing temps. From constant hunger to full stomaches. From complete post-quake chaos to unknown order. In these first days and weeks, how can they possibly make sense of such an absolute shift in their reality? Will they cry for what was familiar to them, despite its horrific limitations?
