It can mutate into an animal or a human because it uses the Mú ran (magical herbs)…It is Kanaima, said the old man, and everyone trembled. For the Pemón people, it represents the beginning of all evil….What an unusual name for such a majestic place…F.O.G.

The waterfalls that fill the lagoon in Canaima, Venezuela, are magnificent during the rainy season. The water is a rich reddish-brown because of decaying leaves in the river as it winds through the jungle / rain-forest.

The Churún River is a river in Venezuela, part of the Orinoco River basin. It is located in Canaima National Park and a tributary comes from the Angel Falls, which are the world's tallest single-drop waterfall.

This was part of the beach on the island where we stayed prior to our Angel Falls adventure. The lagoon in Canaima, Venezuela is flanked on one side by a huge row of violent waterfalls. They sound like a freight train, and beat a froth into the water. The tint in the water is caused by leaves rotting upstream.

Canaima National Park is a 30,000 km2 (12,000 sq mi) park in south-eastern Venezuela that roughly occupies the same area as the Gran Sabana region. It is located in Bolívar State, reaching the borders with Brazil and Guyana.

Our water taxi when we stayed on the island in Canaima Lagoon.

That may sound all exotic and stuff, but this is the same island where we were allowed 3 hours of electricity per day. It was pretty rustic.

Canaima National Park is a 30,000 km2 (12,000 sq mi) park in south-eastern Venezuela that borders Brazil and Guyana. It is located in Bolívar State, and roughly occupies the same area as the Gran Sabana region.

The park was established on 12 June 1962. It is the second largest park in the country, after Parima-Tapirapecó, and sixth biggest national park in the world. It is the size of Belgium or Maryland.

About 65% of the park is occupied by plateaus of rock called tepuis, which are a kind of plateau of millions of years old, with vertical walls and almost flat tops. These constitute a unique biological environment and are also of great geological interest. Their sheer cliffs and waterfalls (including Angel Falls, which is the highest waterfall in the world, at 1,002 metres (3,287 ft)) create spectacular landscapes.

In 1994, the Canaima National Park was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, as a natural reserve that has abrupt relief special and unique around the world, the tepuis.

I have posted this before, but I always felt there was something wrong with the colors in previous version. This is much much better...

After a night rain, the volume of water over the falls increased significantly, sending up a heavy spray, and putting a froth on the lagoon.

We stayed on an island in the middle of this lagoon.

Upside: views like this.

Downside: 3 hours of electricity per day.

One of the most beautiful places in Venezuela is Canaima lagoon and its surroundings. The lagoon is fed by several small water falls: Hacha, Wadaima, Golondrina and Ucaima. On the back you can see 3 "tepuy", the flat top mountains, that distinguish this region of Venezuela, they are called Nonoy-Tepuy ("Zamuro" or Vulture), Kuravaina-Tepuy ("Venado" or Deer) and Topochi-Tepuy ("Cerbatana" or Blowpipe).

A few people have mentioned the colour of the water in the main waterfall, this is in part, due to the natural abundance of minerals, the water takes a red color, however, there was blue skies to the right of this scene. with some sunshine, so the redish colour, is from a combination of both the waters natural colour and some reflection from the sun.

Thank you all for your comments. I feel very privileged to have visited such a special place.

There have been scenes from several Hollywood blockbusters filmed around the Canaima Lagoon over the years. One of the waterfalls was used as the hiding place in the Last Of The Mohicans, Dragonfly had scences filmed here as did the first Jurassic Park film.
