HvÃtserkur
HvÃtserkur ('camicia da notte bianca' in islandese) è un faraglione di origine basaltica sulla costa orientale della penisola di Vatnsnes nel nord-ovest dell'Islanda. Il nome deriva dal colore del guano degli uccelli (gabbiani e fulmari) che nidificano numerosi sulla formazione rocciosa.
Lo sperone è alto circa 15 metri e i due fori alla base gli conferiscono l'aspetto di un drago che si abbevera. Secondo la tradizione locale, HvÃtserkur era in realtà un troll della costa di Strandir. Una sera, esasperato dal suono delle campane del convento di Þingeyrarklaustur, egli decise di andare a distruggere le campane ma, poiché aveva calcolato male la distanza del campanile, l'alba lo sorprese prima che gli fosse possibile raggiungere un rifugio, e i raggi del sole lo pietrificarono per sempre (cosa fisiologica per i troll della mitologia norrena).
Hvitserkur ('white nightdress' in Icelandic) is a stack of basaltic origin on the east coast of Vatnsnes peninsula in northwest Iceland. The name comes from the color of the guano birds (gulls and fulmars) that nest on the numerous rock formation.
The spur is about 15 meters high and the two holes at the base give it the appearance of a dragon that is drinking. According to local tradition, Hvitserkur was actually a troll of Strandir coast. One evening, exasperated by the sound of the bells of the monastery Þingeyrarklaustur, he decided to go and destroy the bells but, because he had misjudged the distance of the bell tower, sunrise surprised him before it was possible to reach a shelter, and the sun's rays the petrified forever (physiological thing for the trolls of Norse mythology).
