Brownlow Hill Loop Road.
Governor Lachlan Macquarie on 11th January 1815 undertook an inspection of another station along Mount Hunter Creek to Brownlow.
It was originally named Lowe’s Hill and in response to a request from Commissioner Bigge Governor Macquarie would in 1820 change the name from Lowe’s Hill to Brownlow Hill to honour Commissioner Bigge’s friend Lord Brownlow.
In the mid 1820’s Peter Murdoch who had accompanied Macquarie was granted 809 hectares (2,000 acres) to the north-west of Mount Hunter.

Inbound.
It is early morning as these two ducks flew across the water before coming in for landing.
With their landing complete they then splashed about and flapped their wings and generally frolicked about in the water.

Another year passes.
I took this image on new years day 2022 of this old house that is estimated to be in excess of 100 years old.
As I watched the day draw to a close it reminded me that this old house had just seen the dawning of yet another year.
We can only wonder as to what stories it could tell us, for starters it could divulge stories of those who once called it home and it could give us an intimate insight into their lives.
On a much broader spectrum we only guess as to the historical moments in history that occurred during its time.
Perhaps more importantly we can can only wonder as to how many more New Year's Days it will see?

Through the gates.
Through the gates and after the rain the paddocks are green and there is still clouds in the sky.
It provides renewed hope for those that battle the elements both natural and man-made as they earn a living of the land.

Even though its working life has now expired and it is parked on the fence line it still has a useful purpose as a business advertisement.
Known by all and sundry the old Toyota has now become and icon of Camden and is now an integral part of the landscape.
Which just proves that you can't keep a good truck down.

The switch.
Years of exposure to the elements are obvious on this metal tubing that carried the electrical wiring to the switch.
Likewise years of exposure has dried out the timber that once served as an external wall on the old house which is estimated to be at least 100 years old.
From what we know the house was last inhabited in the 1970's.

It has been described as the golden age of railway travel which occurred at a time when it seemed that no expense was spared on passenger comfort, depending of course as to what Class you travelled.
It was the golden age era of steam trains.
Carriages were built using timber and the seats were more spacious and it was also the era when black and white framed photographs adorned the compartments promoting tourism to locations in each state.
Like everything though trains had to move forward with the times and the elegance of train travel came at a cost and that cost was the production of carriages that lost the old world charm and were mass produced and built down to a price rather than built up to a standard.
We are fortunate that there a dedicated people who have a strong desire to preserve the heritage and history of our railways past and this carriage is a fine example that has been retained.
It is located at the NSW Rail Museum at Thirlmere.

Weathered door.
I cannot imagine how long this door has been left to the elements nor can I imagine how many people ever passed through it.
It was once an entrance door to a now abandoned church which still stands and even its wooden covering is now feeling the years of loneliness and aging as its paint is now peeling away leaving only dry splitting exposed wooden boards.
The cause of the closure of the church is unknown but perhaps it was due to more modern means transport which allowed the parishioners the opportunity to travel into town or maybe it was a case of natural attrition as people moved away.
Whatever the reason what remains is memories for those who once attended this small country church and a large number of those people are still living in the district.
There can be so many and varied reasons but what I do know for certain is that the old wooden door remains and no doubt it will remain until the elements of nature claim victory and the door is no more.

On a rural road.
There is just that something about a drive in a rural region and it is hard to pinpoint exactly what makes it so refreshing and enjoyable.
Put simply there are too many answers but one feature is the distinctly rural feel of large trees growing along a fence line.
This particular fence has a numerous large trees growing and in the late afternoon light they create a beautiful cast combination consisting of light and shadow.

Flowers.
It started out as a quiet drive around the district and off we went until we got as far as Theresa Park.
That was when I saw these very well established trees with what seemed to me to be unusual flowers.
Not being a botanist I have no idea as to what they are but for some reason they did remind of trees that grow in the Southern states of America.
No matter their origin they are a beautiful flower.

I hear the train a comin’.
Today’s train service between Thirlmere and Buxton proved to be popular as steam locomotive 3001 was coupled up with two historic passenger carriages for the journey to Buxton.
I caught up with 3001 as it was preparing to depart Thirlmere and I was able to go ahead and capture the journey firstly at Couridjah and finally at Buxton.

Steam locmotive 3001 has no long arrived in Buxton and it is here that the locomotive is disconnented from the two passenger carriages that it had hauled for Thirlmere.
The engine changes track and is reversed into position which will allow to pull the carriages.
Here the locomotive has completed its change and is about to reconnect with the passenger cars.

Pioneer Sergeant.
He is the Pioneer Sergeant of the 73rd Regiment of Foot and he is wearing the uniform that was worn in the era circa early 1800’s.
As a Pioneer Sergeant which incidentally is not a rank but it rather an appointment and it is only applicable to an infantry regiment.
Being the largest man in the regiment was a good indicator that you would be or already were appointed the Pioneer Sergeant and the reason being was that it was your role to act as the carpenter, joiner and also as the regimental blacksmith.
Hence the beard, the Pioneer Sergeant was allowed to grow a beard and the reason being was that it would offer some protection to his face whilst he was working the forge.
However this Pioneer Sergeant does little of those assigned tasking as he is a member of the 73rd Regiment of Foot re-enactment society which boasts societies around Australia and as such has a very extensive membership.
The 73rd made an appearance at the Back to Belgenny weekend which was held on 17th August 2024 and the historic Macarthur farm where the regiment participated in a number of activities which related to their past.
Included was a mock battle which enabled spectators to again a much great insight into the art of warfare from the early 19th century.

Camden Hotel is located at 105 Argyle Street where it was originally built in the 1870’s when its conception came about as it attracted thirsty hardworking and no doubt hard drinking drovers.
These drovers would make a point of stopping at the hotel as a stopover point to not only quench their thirst but also to catch up with other drovers to gather information and just enjoy a chat.
At the time the Camden Hotel opened it was on the stock route that led from Melbourne to Gippsland and the roads were unsealed and the only means of travel was by horse.
The original Commercial Hotel building which was demolished in 1935 was a simple weatherboard building consisting of a single storey but that did not prevent it from becoming the hub of the community attracting travellers, locals and others.
The newer building which is based on the Tudor style of architecture was designed by S.H. Buchanan and Cowper architects from Sydney.
Throughout the ensuing years the hotel underwent numerous name changes from being the Commercial Hotel, Camden Inn, Camden Tavern, Molly Maguires Irish Pub and the latest name change which occurred in 2015 when it was named the Camden Hotel.
Today the Camden Hotel is an integral part of Camden’s social scene that attracts many of Australia’s leading artists who feature at the venue.

Miss Llewella Davies Pioneer Walkway.
In 2016 Camden Council in conjunction with Camden Town Farm management committee was successful in being awarded a Metropolitan Greenspace grant to build the Llewella Davies Pioneer Walkway.
The $702,000 walkway received $351,000 in funding through the Metropolitan Greenspace Program, with the rest funded by Council.
It is names in honour of the the grand old lady of Camden, Miss Llewella Davies who was an icon of the town.
Fast forward to 2016 when Camden Council and the Camden Town Farm management committee were given a grant of $351,000 from the Metropolitan Greenspace Program to fund the construction of the Llewella Davies Pioneer Walkway.
Built at a cost of $702,000 Camden Council funded the balance of the required cost to enable the project to be undertaken.
The Walkway which encompasses an overall distance of approximately 2.4 kilometres is contained within the Camden Town Farm and was opened by Camden Mayor Theresa Fidelli on 17th August 2019.
Positioned on the high ground and overlooking the Camden area is this reminder of the past.

The dray.
Its working life has long expired and today it is relegated to a corner in the paddock where it rests and it's main
use is perhaps that of an ornament.
Its metallic wheels are now covered in rust as it the other metal parts that adorn the old dray.
The once solid timber that formed its sturdy body and would have carried huge and heavy loads is now showing signs of decay.
Back in its day the dray would have played a key role in the transportation of many a varied load all of which contributed to life of our early pioneers who founded this district.
Rest easy old dray for you have served your time well.

The mantle piece.
Where else would one keep their animal skulls but on the mantle piece in the lounge room.
That being said it should also be noted that this 100 year old plus house has not be left uninhabited since the 1970's and today it is used for storage of farm equipment.

Hurdy-Gurdy player.
"Bonjour mada quel est cet instrument dont tu joues ?"
"Bonjour monsieur et ça s'appelle une vielle à rouevielle et elle est très ancienne et elle date du moyen age."
So what exactly is a hurdy-gurdy ?
It is a unique musical instrument that dates back to the Middle Ages when it was known in Latin as the organistrum and the symphonia and it was known as the vielle à roue (the vielle with the wheel) in France.
Fast forward to modern times where this amazing instrument gained the name of hurdy-gurdy and all the musical purists its strings are tuned to either ‘G’ or ‘C’ notes and it produces a sound akin to that of a violin.
Although a stringed instrument it is played by rotating a handle which turns a rosined wheel which rubs against the strings and this act’s in a manner similar to a violin bow.
Whilst hurdy-gurdy’s are a recognised musical instrument they are not an off the shelf acquisition and due the technical skills required in production and the complexity of the instrument each instrument has to be custom manufactured.
The lady playing this hurdy-gurdy is a member 73rd Regiment of Foot a military re-enactment society that specialises in the early 19th era and to tune the instrument she has to have the piper close by to tune into the pipes.
The group conduct mock battles involving the English 73rd against a French contingent and there are no guess’s as to the eventual winners are. Obviously with the red, white and blue sash this lady is representing the French.
They were participants at the Back to Belgenny festivities which was held at Belgenny Farm near Camden.

Muskets.
Two soldiers from the 73rd Regiment of Foot left their muskets leaning against a tree whilst they took a break.
It must have been a time consuming task to load and continually reload a musket in combat as the ram rod (clearly seen) was as long as the barrel.
The purpose of a ramrod (scouring stick) was either metal or wooden and was used to push the projectile down the barrel and hard up against the blackpowder (propellant) which when sparked would explode and force the projectile to exit.
These two muskets were used by the 73rd Regiment of Foot during an historic display at Belgenny Farm.
Such is the interest in the 73rd re-enactment society that it boasts societies and members around Australia.
