I am a big fan of Calvin Hollywood. I tried one of his video tutorials, to get the famous "Calvinize look". This picture was just for fun.
It`s been a while since I have used all the studio equipment...
The light setup is the same, Calvin used in his video. I used a gray background. Two 90cm stiplights with Jinbei flash heads and a 90cm octobox infront of me. This one was used with a Yongnuo flash. All triggered via YN-622C.

So it was time for a shot with the boys to which they participated completely voluntarily. Played around with the clarity slider and the new de-haze feature of LR afterwards. Nice embossed, calvinized outcome.

Selbstporträt, ausleuchtung angelehnt an Martin Schoeller mit zwei Stiplights ca. 45° vor mir 30x120 mit jeweils einem Yongnuo 560III bei 1/2 Leistung. Das ganze mal wieder vor meinem weißen Falthintergrund von Walimex.
Danach ein wenig verflüssigt und bearbeitet :)

I’ve been watching an immense amount of Top Gear lately now that I found seasons 1-13 is on instant Netflix. (Picture below is from my TV)
Well today I finally received my Geology text book in the mail. I ordered it quite a while ago, and now I can actually use it in my class tomorrow. I also got a B on my first percalc quiz of the semester and the only reason I got the one wrong was because I didn’t check my work to see if the equation checked out, oh well ( that’s usually the case when it comes to math problems). Anyway, getting my geology book in the mail is why I decided to take a photo of a mailbox. I’m trying a semi-new processing technique to my photos, so please bear with me while I fiddle for a few weeks with results. I was recommended these tutorials called Calvinize from a fellow flickr friend Perry Melat . Even though the creator has a very thick German accent, his English is very easy to understand and I really recommend using him. I was able to find some of his videos online so I didn’t have to pay in order to learn these really helpful techniques, I really recommend him if you can find something!
I’m still critiquing my dodging and burning technique and as well as some detail affects, but like I said, it will probably take some weeks (or maybe even moths) before it’s really good.

Lightroom - not much
Changed temp from 4150 to 4644 to warm the image some
Sharpened using:
- amount: 79
- radius: 0.6
- detail: 25
- masking: 54
Photoshop
- Made a new layer and did spot heal brush work to fix any skin blemishes
- Cut out the subject using Fluid Mask 3 + some brushwork in a mask
- Made a new background by filling with gray and then layering on a white-to-transparent gradient centered around the subject's face and then set the layer to 49% opacity
- To mitigate the banding lines I merged the background layers and added noise
- I ran Calvinize at 100% (Calvinize is a technique from Calvin Hollywood)
- High details layer brushed onto the skin and hair at about 30% if I recall
- Totally Rad Action : Yin Yang -- darkened the shadows on the subjects muscles at about 10% opacity. Lightened the highlights on the subject's body at about 10 to 15% and brightened the subject's face camera left at about 60%
- Ran Totally Rad Action : Shadow Separator to bring out some detail in the highlights and set the layer opacity to 54%
- Added a Vibrance layer and reduced the vibrance of the image to -32

Warmed it up about 1k
Raised the fill light from 0 to 30
Bumped the exposure .14
Dropped the blacks from 5 to 0
Applied Totally Rad Preset: Boogie Nights | Strong
Dropped the clarity some (from what was applied by the preset)
Now the picture is a little washed out overall. So, time for some graduated filters:
1) on the bottom to about 4/5 up the frame lowered the exposure .58 and raised the contrast 90
2) on the top-left to just over the subject's face lowered exposure 2 stops and raised contrast to 100
3) on the top right corner to just beyond the subject's head dropped the exposure 1.5 stops and raised contrast to 100
In Photoshop:
Removed any skin blemishes or suit fuzz I could find
Ran Calvinize (from Calvin Hollywood) at 50%
Ran Totally Rad Actions Shadow Separator at 48% and masked out the left and right sides of the frame to effectively run the shadow separator on just the subject.
Ran a details enhancement action (picked up from Calvin Hollywood) selectively on the subject at varrying opacities
Ran Totally Rad Actions and lightened parts of the face and any highlights on the suit jacket and pants to give them a little more depth.

Spend the weekend watching some youtube videos about photoshop techniques from calvin hollywood. I admire his way to modify colors and tones making his pictures cool and somewhat unreal :) I actually used an older photo which I shot some months ago to try some of his post edit techniques. Not too bad for now but will keep practice. I'm calvinized :P
Strobist Info: Usual 3 light setup with 2x YN560-II left and right behind model and 1x 430EX-II through white umbrella in front of model.
This shot is from a senior session in Boise, ID. We were walking across the street and I just asked her to stop for a quick shot. I didn't direct her at all as I felt she nailed the pose.
In Lightroom:
• I applied Totally Rad Preset: Boogie Nights | Strong to the imported image
• I did some light sharpening and noise reduction
In Photoshop:
• I did a little spot heal work on the skin and removed the run in her hose.
• I did the Calvinize technique from Calvin Hollywood at 69%
• I ran the Totally Rad Action Lux (soft) at 100%
• I ran the Totally Rad Action Get Faded (Autumn) at 65%.
• I ran the Totally Rad Action Yin/Yang. With that I darkened the street around her legs and lightened the background scene behind her head. I lightened the right side of her face (her left side) as well since it was shaded somewhat.
• I used a skin smoothing technique from Calvin Hollywood.

This shot was from a senior portrait session in Boise, ID.
In Lightroom:
• I set the white balance using the eye dropper from the white balance section and clicked on the white of her eye.
• I did some sharpening and noise reduction.
• A used the Totally Rad Preset: Boogie Nights | Strong
• Lastly I used a gradient filter from the top left of the image to about 4/5 the way to the bottom-right of the image with a contrast of 66, exposure of +.58, and with a yellow color (H 57, S 73%).
In Photoshop:
• I used spot heal on the skin to remove any blemishes and cloned out a green spot on one of the glass tiles that was bothering me.
• I used the Calvinize technique from Calvin Hollywood at 38% opacity.
• Skin softening brushed in as needed using a skin softening technique also from Calvin Hollywood.
• Eyes brightened with yet another technique from Calvin Hollywood. This was done at 8%. I'm not a big fan of wildly brightened eyes, so I'll used the effect, but only sparingly.
• I finished up with some selective sharpening using a technique from Calvin Hollywood. The effect is applied to the entire image and then masked out and painted in at 15-40% in select areas such as eyes, mouth, hair, and shirt.
