Gratitude is inestimable wisdom in a world where transactions are put in the columns of ledger. Actions valued by vested gains. Where the gestures are measured by their mere worth and ‘thanks’ nothing more than a petty receipt.
This is capture of a selection of Spices on one of the stalls that surround the streets of Calangute in Goa.

It is not my life style to wake up early in the morning. Not so for many decades now. A few days ago circumstances so conspired that I had to get up early and take a walk on the Calangute Baga beach in a bid to liven up my current plebian existence and see how it felt to be up with the sun on the windswept beaches of Goa.
It felt good. The sprightly breeze tugged at the conscience and the invigorating nippy cold reminded me of a life shorn of a purposeful beginning. Should have listened to the wise men and woken up early in life -;))
Anyway, the air was cool, the sand wonderful and the sun was riding up majestically on the Eastern horizon. If you looked carefully all that you saw were tawdry ugly cheapskate beach shacks donning colors of modern day telephone companies, You get away to have a respite and even on the beach you have hardsell of the telcos staring sullenly in their red and blue plumage.
Calangute and Baga were once the best of beaches in Goa but are today the worst of them as every square kilometre of space is packed with tourists, beachbeds, peddlars of junk and tourist shacks doling out bad food.
Mercifully, at this time in the morning, the only thing stirring were the migrant workers of the shacks brushing their teeth on the seashore and the ubiquitous crows and dogs rustling up a racket.
The sun still rises over these beaches and on its part the sky and the sun do what they do best. What they light up is for you to see.

My last day in Goa, we took a early morning ride to Fort Agauda and on way back made to Calangute, one of the most popular beach. Though it was early morning it was already crowded and beach was heavily littered. I had to photoshop to remove the debris in the sand, there are still some visible.
April in Goa, the sun is hot and fishing is at full steam as by end May, early June the fishing ban comes in force.
A collective effort as you can see.

The finest wood fired pizzas to be had are at this beachside place in Calangute Baga stretch. The smoky aroma of the wood fired ovens make that tangible difference in a pizza this side of genuineness.
This is an Italian restaurant with this chef from south India who was at ease with the cuisine and he always managed to serve the best Italian food in Goa.
Rather difficult place to take a shot, very cramped and with differential lighting from one side.
And the usual bug bear of all kitchen people - the white tunic.

Brittos and St Anthony's - these two restaurants were really great places to be in the early 80s. The large influx of the European touristas and the Israeli military holiday seekers had made Baga their very own. There was only one hotel in Baga and that was Baia Do Sol. I remember looking at the hotel with envious eyes in the early 80s as I could not afford to stay there. The only other hotel that existed on the beachfront was in Calangute and it was run by Goa Tourism. They had built 7 cottages and they were priced affordably for me. So that Is where I stayed.
St Anthony was a more popular place than Brittos. I remember having chicken xacuti curry with Goan rice and it is hard for me to recollect what the palate felt but it was routine food that one could eat anywhere in Goa. The rage then was O"Coqueiro which served the finest Chicken Cafreal in Goa.
Cut to the 21st Century. Brittos is now the most famous restaurant in Goa. It is iconic. No trip to Goa is ever complete if you have not been to Brittos. Such is the status of this restaurant now.
The seating is still on the sand enclosed in a raised bamboo platform. The food is still mostly Goan with a smattering of North Indian dishes and Continental fare thrown in for good measure. The quality of food has remained steady and good over the many years that the restaurant has existed. That is the USP of Brittos. The toughest thing to do in the restaurant business is maintain the same standard of excellence.
So on any given weekend, the restaurant has long waiting periods and when the tourists arrive, it is best to come early and get a seat on the sea facing side. The service is better than the other well known Goan restaurants like Souza Lobo etc..
Suresh and Pascoal are the Restaurant Managers and they keep things ticking. Ask for any of them while you are there and yes you can quote me on their legendary service.
History always has lessons. O'Coqueiro and St Anthony are now mere names which still draw some patrons merely on their old claim to fame but the food really is not up to mark.
So if you are ever in Goa, the place to go to is Brittos.

A vendor on a beach at Utorda in South Goa. The ice cream is branded as "Big B" and is a take off on the great Indian actor Amitabh Bachchan who has always been called by that moniker "Big B". ( The linkage to the site is purely for inofmation. the site maintained by the actor makes excessive usage of deleting comments, editing posts etc...and is pure exercise in johnnie come lately to the internet nirvana )
Utorda beach is clean and wonderful in winter. A restaurant going by the name of "Zeebop" is the rage and has a most amazing setting right on the sands. It is a comfortable spot compared to restaurants like Brittos and others on the North Goa Beaches of Baga Calangute etc as it is not festering with aggressive peddlars of junk. The food is good most times but the last time I was there 3 nights ago they made a hash of the Beef chilly fry goan style. They served a better version later but this is what Zeebop is.....excellent setting and ambience but food can be patchy. Brittos the rage of the restaurants in North Goa, on the other hand will give you good food day in day out. Cheers !! Hic !!!
This shot is a crop out of a larger picture and is put up here to show the conformity to the rules of composition compared to the original which was a deliberate break of the rules.

GoaGaga is a creative name for a property that a friend owns in Goa near the Baga - Calangute axis. goagagaholiday.weebly.com/index.html
goagagaholiday.weebly.com/pay-me.html
goagagaholiday.weebly.com/find-me.html
We have a deal, she uses my photos for her site and in return my pound of flesh is that I get to use the property for an appropriate number of days.
That is a fair deal right ! Do you think I should ask her to give a handsome discount for fellow photogs. Just a thought.
Friends have a look and see how the creative concept is,
This ought to get her present url indexed.;-))

This is Goa. Fishermen arrive back on land and get off the boat to go through the nets to take out the fresh catch. This must have been shot late in the afternoon and the light was pretty good. The fishermen went about with their activity and I shot this at a rather fast shutter speed to capture the action without a blur. This is at 1/3200 with 400 ISO and an aperture of about 3.2
Fast action requires a fast shutter speed and so it is a good idea to tweak up the ISO if the light is not adequate enough
